The Dirlewanger Brigade, officially known as the 36. Waffen-Grenadier-Division der SS, was one of the most notorious units of Germany during World War II. Formed in 1940 and led by Oskar Dirlewanger, a convicted criminal, the brigade was initially composed of poachers, later expanded to include other criminals.
Dirlewanger's men were involved in numerous crimes on the Eastern Front, in Belarus, and in anti-partisan operations. Their actions in the suppression of the Warsaw Uprising in 1944 were particularly heinous, marked by countless crimes. The brigade's operations were characterized by a complete disregard for military and humanitarian laws, resulting in countless civilian deaths and widespread destruction.
Despite its fearsome reputation, the Dirlewanger Brigade was known for its lack of discipline and high casualty rates, both from combat and internal conflicts. As the war drew to a close, the unit saw action in Hungary and Slovakia before being nearly annihilated in the final battles in Germany. Oskar Dirlewanger himself was captured and reportedly killed by Polish guards in 1945.
