I went to go see this in 1988 when I was 8 years old. I BEGGED my parents to take me until they gave in. My mom and dad were super Christian but to their credit, they didn't pull me from the theaters. This movie is what made me love animation and art, and turned me into an artist. I love trilogies like Star Wars, and Back to the Future, bit this movie is my favorite gem, hands down.

I have not seen this answered yet so, Touchstone Pictures is owned by Disney so it is technically a Disney film. They have several smaller companies like this to release films they are unsure of or any that "don't fit in the Disney brand". Nightmare Before Christmas was also not originally released under the Disney brand name but they proudly do so now after its massive success. That extra attention to detail done in this film is often referred to in the art circles as "Bumping the Lamp". Specifically after the scene at the bar hideout where Roger bumps the lamp which for the animators created tons of work that any other production would've avoided. Steven insisted on filming like he would any other film and Richard Williams was the perfect animator to choose for this film. The behind the scenes work is fascinating to watch espscially knowing no computers were involved in the process and even the early cg test for the cancelled sequel is amazing for its time.

I watched this as a very young child so I'm only vaguely remembering things as I see them again now. But somehow, of all the violence and messed up imagery in this movie, the moment that would appear randomly in my nightmares for years afterward was the part when the detective puts that guy's tie into the gears and pulls it tight. No idea why.

This movie is still so good to this day, glad you enjoyed it! The reveal when he gets crushed by the cement roller scared the crap out of me as a kid lol You aren't wrong with how much work this took back then. Apparently when Bob Hoskins grabbed Roger if he had his fingers spread apart it would increase the cost of the scene exponentially because they'd have to draw in between his fingers for each frame.

You wanna know how complicated this movie was to make? Let me give you one example. They had to build a robot arm that can be controlled remotely by a real life arm to hold and move Baby Herman's cigar. Then the animators could draw Baby Herman's arm over the robot arm. Here's another. The scene where Roger bumps a lamp, they had to constantly adjust the shadows on Roger so it matches the swinging lamp. Here's one more. Jessica's dress had to look like it reflected light like sequins. I took layers upon layers of animation effects just to get that down.

It was actually made by Touchstone Pictures, which was a Hydra head of Disney, that was created specifically to create content that was more mature that your typical Disney productions. Touchstone typically covered live action stuff & Disney did the animated stuff. I think Roger Rabbit was one of the few animated Touchstone productions. I can't think of any others, offhand. For a couple of films, I think they did put some Roger Rabbit themed shorts at the beginning of them. I liked this movie, because the crossover nature wasn't just a gimmick. They took great care in the integration of the production styles, and they did their best to make it seem like a fully integrated world.

1. First time I saw this was in the middle of the ocean. My ship (USS Tripoli LPH-10) was doing a Tiger Cruise. That's where crew members could bring "male only" family/friends to join us from Hawaii to San Diego. There were displays set up on the hanger bay. For entertainment there was an area to watch movies. This was one of them. 2. There had to be equal time for Disney and HB characters. 3. I'm loving all the adult innuendos 4. Christopher Lloyd as the heavy. 😎 5. One of the cartoon bullets is the voice of Pat Buttram. He played Mr. Haney on Green Acres. 6. This was Mae Questel's/Betty Boops third to last gig. Her last was" Christmas Vacation". (RIP)😇 7. The tunnel going into Toon Town is the same one they use in the "Back to the Future" movies. 8. Favorite character is the Baby🤣

Disney movie, so they sent Steven Spielberg to make an in-person request in exchange for an Executive Producer credit. No one says no to Spielberg, and Disney had to agree that The WB characters would have the same amount of screen time. The amazing thing, in 1988 CGI as I it’s infancy. This was all hand drawn

Not true. This is one of those persistent rumors that circulate through a fandom, without any basis in reality. WB did have _some_ stipulations as to how their characters could be portrayed, but they weren't _nearly_ as restrictive as people say they were, and neither screen time nor number of lines were even mentioned in the agreement. This came out June 22, 1988. It took a total of 8 months to film from November 2, 1986 to July 1987 (the average time of filming is 2 to 4 months). Post production lasted 14 months, running from late March 1987 to early June 1988 (Post production usually didn’t take more than 6 months for a SFX heavy movie at the time). A grand total of 1 year and 7 months to make, but it was totally worth it and still a masterpiece almost 35 years later! There’s several “making of” videos floating around here somewhere and it’s very interesting to watch what they had to do before CGI became so prominent.

Based on a book "Who KILLED Roger Rabbit" which I haven't read. However, the original movie screenplay was a political satire on the killing of the US local trolley systems. In America, all the rail systems, both railroads and light-rail, were privately owned, having to pay taxes, even on the miles and miles of real estate they own, and having to make a profit. Everywhere else in the world, rail systems are partially or totally owned and are operated by the government (the way highways, canals, and airports are subsidized here). Starting during the Depression, GM, Standard Oil, and a major oil company set up individual holding companies all over, with the deliberate purpose of putting the trolley systems out of business. This included Los Angeles, whose Pacific Electric system, operating the "red cars," was the largest electric rail system in the US. This is not some fanciful conspiracy theory - around 1955, the three were convicted of a conspiracy and fined $2k, the cost of one new car at the time. But it was too late. The reason was to either force people to switch to buses, or better yet, to private autos. In order to facilitate this, cities bulldozed limited-access highways through municipal residential and commercial districts, subdividing a city into small sections. All those cars require parking spaces, and thus led to the rise of malls and big-box stores on the outskirts. Due to both racial bias and the disparity in wealth and power, the highways mostly sliced up neighborhoods of marginalize peoples, or cutting them off from the rest of the city. This was deliberate. In the NYC area, Robert Moses designed overpasses just low enough to prohibit buses, which poorer people use. It is also easy to see how more vibrant are say the downtowns of Europe, and likewise the cities here which retained their mass-transit - like New York City, Philadelphia, Chicago, Boston, and San Francisco. Today for many reasons, cities are reversing this, rebuilding and/or expanding their mass-transit systems, and even removing highways in the middle of downtowns. Back to this movie - the name "Toontown" was a take-off of the highly pejorative term "coontown," where "those crazy people live." I'm greatly simplifying this but this movie had generated a lot of discussion, pro and con, on KZbin. Just search for "Roger Rabbit" and "trolleys." I also recommend James Kunstler's "The Geography of Nowhere," which he introduces by saying Roger Rabbit is "based on a true story."

The film was a collaboration between Warner bros and Disney, with the contract stipulating that each studio’s characters had to share the same amount of screen time with Disney’s animation studio pulling most of the weight for the frame-by-frame animation. In order to create the realistic interaction between real world and toons the set would have multiple rigs to interact with the set pieces and in jessica’s case a stand-in actress. It’s a descent enough whodunnit film but the passion the production team put into it is what makes it stand out

This is a *Disney* film, I don’t know what strings had to be pulled and hoops jumped through to obtain rights and permissions for the Warner Bros and Tex Avery characters, but almost certainly it will never be able to be done again. And yes, they were “flexing” a bit, looking for every opportunity they could come up with to include interaction between toon and “real world”, and going out of their way to do stuff they didn’t strictly need to, because, well, that was kind of the whole point in making this. Best example is the swinging light in the hideout room, when Eddie is trying to saw off the handcuffs. To match the moving, changing lighting, on the toon, means a lot more work for the animators. Basically they were showing off.

I was surprised to see the title of your video. Personally I think Cool World is the dirtiest animated movie. I have an answer to both of your questions. Who framed Roger Rabbit is kind of a Disney movie. The thing is that the movie was released under the touchstone banner because Michael Eisner at the time thought the film was too raunchy or adult to be a Disney movie. The reason why Judge Doom’s voice sounds familiar is because he was played by Christopher Lloyd. The same guy who played Doc Brown in the Back to the future trilogy. Who framed Roger Rabbit is better than Space Jam. Space Jam is good but it’s never as good as Who framed Roger Rabbit.

15:38 - PG 13 was just barely starting to get used. So it's likely that it was rated under the old PG based criteria which was more like, PG/PG13 all rolled into one. So movies like Spaceballs have an F-word in it, which for PG movies, wasn't uncommon but, they get like, one use of it. Like PG 13 does now a days. PG-13 was created in 1984, Roger Rabbit came out in 1988, so likely it had received its rating either while they were moving criteria around to the new PG-13 rating, or, the censors were using the 1983 PG Criteria to determine it's rating.

List of animated films objectively more hardcore/adult/dirtier than this: Fritz The Cat, Watership Down, The Plague Dogs, Felidae, Sausage Party, Heavy Metal, Heavy Metal 2000, Fire & Ice, Coonskin, Heavy Traffic, Cool World, Beavis & Butt-Head Do America, Queer Duck, The Haunted World Of El Superbeasto, South Park Bigger Longer & Uncut, Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For Theaters, When The Wind Blows, I Married A Strange Person, A Scanner Darkly. And this isn't even counting Anime films like Project A-Ko, Akira, Ghost In The Shell, Paprika, Perfect Blue, Vampire Hunter D, X, Twilight Of The Cockroaches, Jin-Roh, Appleseed, and many many more. Basically if you think this is as "adult" as it gets, you literally could not be more wrong.

The shoe in acid part was traumatizing to a lot of people. It's still uncomfortable to watch.

I will admit that the following is something I post on a lot of reactions to this film: If you have Disney+, watch a show on there called "Prop Culture." It has an episode that shows a lot of behind-the-scenes for this film. There's also "VFX Artists React to Bad & Great CGi 12" here on KZbin because they showcase a couple of the other scenes. Believe it or not, there's barely any green-screen effects in this film: It's all practically...well, practical effects from animatronics to wires to puppetry. Toon Town, I believe, is the one exception to have green screen elements. I will also say that Disney has been responsible for films that you wouldn't usually see with the main brand because its creative minds wanted to make other things without having to leave the company. To keep those films separate from the main brand, Disney had films like this distributed through secondary companies such as Touchstone Pictures (which Disney made and is what originally distributed both "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" and "Nightmare Before Christmas"), Miramax (which it no longer owns but the first film they made together was "Pulp Fiction"...so that's also a Disney movie), and now 20th Century (since they own them now).

This is such an amazing film!! There's so many cool videos about how they did this movie.. it's fn crazy.. they used pipes and things to hold things up or real people interacting with objects then they were drawn over by animators. Yes this is way better than space jam!! This was disney but release under touchtone because of the adult content. And disney worked with Spielberg and Warner bros. The main condition from Wb to use their characters was Bugs had to have the same screen time as Mickey. Also this was loosely based in a book but changed ALot.. the writer loved this version so much he wrote a second novel more in line with this story. So fun!

YES. That movie theatre scene. It would have been so much easier to just have Roger jump over the rope. It wouldve been totally acceptable too. But instead, they went through all the effort of making that happen.

Theres also usually so much stuff going on in the background too all the time. Always animation mixed with live action too. So much unnecessary effort, but it brings it all together.

I think they said they’d never do it again with the money and time it took not to mention the legalities with Disney and Warner characters.
