Hey Chase, Thanks for sharing this. Watching this, I was reminded of a very pertinent advice I read somewhere. It went something like this -"Once you know your camera and craft, then leave photography and immerse yourself in art. Any kind you can find. Look at paintings, abstracts, anything and everything..." definitely resonates with me more now. Thanks

Hey Chase, working predominantly as a designer I have always turned to photography for inspiring and exercising my craft. You words are incredibly valuable here to everyone developing their creativity further! I love your BTS videos from way *way* back (I mean when I used to subscribe to them on iTunes 😯) I think they planted the seed for starting my own channel and set a base for how I could follow my own direction rather than make videos all about camera settings 😉 As always, I'm eternally thankful - cheers!

This really is a concept we need to incorporate. When you're doing one thing you usually get into it fully without looking at the boundaries and other stuff that could help solve problems or make things easier/better. Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts. Truly inspirational!

I love the 'behind the scenes' RAW videos. Thanks Chase, keep it up! Been following photographers and techniques on CreativeLIVE since 2012, these RAW videos are a next level up. What you talk about reminds me of my architectural degree, earlier on in my studies teachers told us to look outside of architecture, specially looking at nature and organic shapes etc. For creative industries including photography, everything around us is inspirational, e.g. watching a movie, looking at graphic designs, music, product design, fashion, a painting, poem etc.

Right On Chase. The knobs, dials and mechanics of photography are of course important, they're basic our tools. Inspiration and finding it are vital ingredients which come from many places most of which are outside of photography

You always give us the deepest and most forward-thinking information and advice of anyone out there, Chase! Like you said, knowing your craft matters, but as soon as that happens watching another video on settings or a review of the latest camera is not going to make us better. What you said is the fastest way to become the head of the pack in our local industry.

The dirty secret of photography is this: Every class you take to shoot like " fill in the name" and every class you take to learn the tricks of " fill in the name" make you a mediocre photographer and kill the creativity that is inside you that makes you different. Learn the basics, then understand that all the shooters out there cannot teach you to shoot like you. It is all inside you. Oh, and take some business courses on coursera.com for FREE.

Very true Patrick!! About ten years ago I joined a photography challenge site and I studied the photographs that always scored well ( the site was a score your peers type thing) and I thought to myself "I need to take pictures like the top scoring photographers on the site to place well" I might add I am not a professional photographer but have been shooting since high school in 1978. I did horrible!! then someone left a comment on one of my submissions, and I paraphrase, that said I should just shoot what I really liked and forget about everyone else's style. They said "if you like something there are other people that will like it as well and if it's from your heart it will be much better than you trying to copy the top ranking people on here" I thought about that and while it seems obvious now it was a profound statement for me then. I did shoot just for me after that and my ratings shot up! Be true to yourself first and of course you have to have a firm grasp of the mechanics of the craft but beyond that all will fall into place. Learn the basics and then break the rules!!
@claybutler
@claybutler 7 жыл бұрын
Spot on. But the reason to learn how to shoot like "so and so" is not to actually shoot like them, it's to open your options by adding new techniques to your own vision. It's what the masters do in all creative fields do. You deconstruct the work of those you admire and in the process crack the their code and then those new ideas and techniques get incorporated into your own style.

Great message Chase... I started following you about a year ago when a stumble into your video from DigitalRev with Kai... the fact that you are "self taught" photographer and also successful one really brings value in your comments... I started to get into photography quite late... bought my first DSLR at 35 years old and thinking about taking it more seriously than just posting it in my social networks always makes look for excuses... did i get into this too late... I should have started earlier... etc ... well now following your comments from this and other videos, as well as other photographers out there is really about being passionate and spending time doing what you like and especially listening to others opinions and criticism without taking it personally

Thank you Chase, I am Business Architect and I am going to apply this to my work. Too often organizations have to engage this style of architecture as a full time role. I have been able to bring value to business units with under 80 hours of effort so I am now going to look at a model that is about the “plan” / “Shoot” so that they only buy the result not the hours it takes to get there. Here we go.

The funny thing is Chase, you are spot on but wrong at the same time. This is the dirtiest secret of success in anything, if we focus on one the the field we work in or study and put blinders on whats going on around us. There can just the technical stuff that make our work shine like everyone else in our profession. Everyone you mentioned got a spark from outside their realm of work or profession. Some get the spark from their family, looking a other designs, words on paper, graffiti in an alley, or a water bottle rolling down the street. I am a Project Manager for a construction company, I get inspired to do great things from outside of my work by relaxing and learning new things like photography, fishing, and being with family and friends. It is the interaction with my family and friends that I learn the most on how to interact with others that helps my work. If I just focused on my project portfolio management my life would be miserable and my work would show it. Thank you for the work that you do to inspire others.

I think the one thing the vast majority of aspiring photographers don't understand is that chasing that "perfect shot" means very little. In art school I was taught to work on a portfolio, a body of a work, a project that takes one concept or idea or process or philosophy and expands upon it as much as possible. I rarely come across aspiring photographers who have an actual portfolio... they're just collections of random shots. At this point it doesn't even really matter if they are good or bad photos, if you don't have a concept, a story, or idea you're working towards creating an understanding of then the photos are little more than quick bites of candy for the eye. A photographer friend of mine was fairly irritated by the Humans Of New York project becoming so popular because "the guy isn't even a photographer.".... that friend was failing to understand that regardless of whether the photos themselves were "amazing", it is the project and the message and the idea that is important. Same thing in the traditional fine arts world. Many great artists did not rely on skill but rather concept.

Awesome advice, some that I have known for a while, but I seem unable to get myself out of the rut of being 'just another photographer'....and in the position I am in, trying to break into the industry, why would anyone hire 'just another photographer' when there are established tried and tested ones.... As always though, you are constantly evolving your craft, and not just the photography, but Chase and CreativeLIVE as brands and organisations as well. That...is why I class you as one of the most influential photographers I have come across.

As far as pay goes, even after I had become established and comfortable shooting different situations, weddings, events, live bands, portraits, kids, fine art, I still had a hard time determining what to charge. I started to barter my work for the creative work of those clients I admired and had something I wanted. It gave me a sense of what my work was worth to them, seeing what they would trade and what they normally charged for it. This helped build relationships and my art collection at the same time. Also these people tended to refer me more work.

Great video! Interestingly enough, I take the concept of this video to a whole other level. In the 15+ years since I decided to call myself a photographer I have not once ever looked inside of the industry for inspiration. In fact, I have no idea who all those photographers are that you mentioned. More so, I only know who you are because I once saw a digital workflow video you did some years ago and found it interesting because I am a computer nerd by trade (Network Engineer). My inspiration has always come from the outside. It's never been about photography for me but more about applying what I've learned in my primary profession and life to the stories I try to tell through the lens. Maybe, one day, I'll have enough courage to let the world see it.

About combining words and photography: So true! It is true that (in general) a great image tells it's story, but adding words, even only vaguely connected, can tell the story in a completely different, more layered way. Especially when it comes to travel photography. I possess a beautyful book of pictures from tokyo and except for the titles littered on the last page there is no word in that book. The images are beautiful, but it could be so much more... :(

You certainly present a noticeably paradoxical maxim as such a simple but game changing point of conversation, no doubt. Thanks, bro. I see what your message here means to my business and I have gained more clarity on what the first step of my next phase will look like. In my experience, the Marathons and Conquests we finish the finest in are the ones in which we can clearly envision ourselves crossing the line well before we lace up the sneakers. I think this topic has lifted a fog that naturally settles after having survived these past twenty-five years off my creativity and technical abilities staying balanced. It's tough for a lot of artists in the business world because that balance forces us to be equal parts right and left brained. Gotta have compassion, but you gotta have logical detatchment. Gotta trust clients and employees but you've also got to follow up when the invoices aren't paid or the payroll is higher than the productivity. I think that's the dirtiest secret in the "Art Industry": You cant love everybody but your life and livelihood depends on you doing just that. You gotta love everybody no matter what their role because we are all doing our seperate little things but we are doing them Together. Kick, push, coast... right? Then the funk settles in. Then you notice something outside your funking around that's unrelated to anything about your medium, your process or even your comprehensive body of work in general. That's how you find your next groove and suddenly you're creative and youre getting noticed by the clients you want. You spring out of very little sleep because you cant wait to get to the office. Its like you're 20 years younger, never worried it's just for a kick and a push. Never looking forward to just coasting or being comfortable. Thanks for reminding me it's better to live this way, and for saying the $hit nobody really $ays in conversation but we all sometimes allow to scream from the collectively camouflaged contributions to a wall in the echo chamber of f-stops and lighting ratios. Im awake now. Bravo. Cheers!

"Lateral thinking", "multi disciplinary influence", "cross fertilisation" are some of the term. There's a book about Hollywood directors, all the great revolutionary directors were NOT "movie directors" in their beginning of their career. They had other careers that didn't involved a camera.

Once again something to think about from Chase. Interesting enough photographic inspiration is not just a beautiful sunset or a pretty girl or what ever we are passing off as the latest concept piece. I do find inspiration in various forms of media. My great grandfather painted fresco's in Germany prior to WW2 my sister is a graphic artist my niece a fine artist and me a photographer. I have drawn inspiration from work within the family. I also draw inspiration from situations that occur when I am on location. A few years ago I was in Ireland on the cliffs of Mour I heard this beautiful flute music riding on the wind. It made shooting the cliffs something else for me. I found myself sitting and just becoming part of the environment instead of shooting one photo after another. I agree Chase I think the experience or being a part of the experience can be the provider of inspiration that sets you apart from every other photographer. Drawing inspiration from other artistic visions is certainly a wonderful approach from paint from sculpture from design. My two cents approach your environment with your eyes wide open draw your inspiration from the world around you and not just things. Mike
