I'm in my 50s, I was promised so much stuff for working free overtime, none of it paid off.

I always tried to work on Week Ends or evenings because of the bonified extra wages. I saved those extra payments, or I repaid my mortgage faster later on in my life. I am now financially free. Extra work pays if it is done cleverly. Working 12h paid 8h is not a good idea indeed. You have to make sure that extra work is rewarded properly otherwise get out.

There's a saying that you teach people how to treat you so if you keep doing extra work for no rewards you'll keep getting the same. Or "insanity is doing the same things and expecting different results"

Thanks for your videos. If only my coworkers at kimley horn understand this. They have an "extra effort" culture where there is a recommended 115% increase of work if 100% is the minimum. 115% is translated to 46 hours minimum a week. Every Monday meeting they make sure projects are piled on you where you hit that 46. If your workload looks like 40 hours, they'll add another project on you to bump it up. Anyone who tries to change or question the culture (me) is negatively looked on and will find ways to kick you out. Thankfully I have my strong faith and good work ethic where it is proven I can work well with my skills and with people. On the other hand, the higher ups that work there are truly workaholics and place their careers above their mental and family health. Thankfully I'm leaving that type of environment and finding a job for the navy. I'm sure it's a very different environment and I like the hybrid but not a lot of people are in the office. I want to steadily increase my technical skills but I would need people to be present to teach me. Another negative is that I won't be as challenged. But I'm willing to sacrifice "smartness" over my family and myself.

That sounds horrible. I am glad you are able to leave that type of environment. Thanks for watching.

Kind of hard to get a new better job when all employers act the same and all pay the same shitty wages.
