I know a few blokes from Barnsley and as soon as they talk to me i just smile because i love the accent. My Grandad was from nearby Worsbrough and remember all the phrases he said. Alot of my ancestors are from there and nearby in Wombwell.

I worked at the Hospital in Barnsley from August '94 - August '95. Loved the town. I'm from Northern Ireland and it took me a little while to wrap my head around the local Barnsley dialect. Figured it out as where I'm from you only have to cross the road and folk have a different accent. Plus my area have a lot of folks who speak the Ulster Scots dialect. - Starving can mean hungry or cold. "I'll get me coit and me booeets." (I'll get my coat and my boots.) "Tin tin tin." (It isn't in the tin.) Etc. Last time I was back in Barnsley I'd lost the knack for the accent and needed subtitles. When I left Barnsley I ended up in Ashington in Northumberland and then had to figure out Geordie. - I left the North East after someone asked me something and I answered with, 'Why Aye Man.' I was becoming assimilated. Now I'm in Cheshire, surrounded by Plastic Scousers.

I'm from Sheffield, but dated a girl from Carlton back in the 1980s. I remember going to the local club and I remember blokes often saying, "Areight t'owd cocker."

Yep true and the aright cocker is still in use today in 2024 but the younger crowds look as if you are going to hurt them and look back with cats eyes or is

"towing mi bag art" abbreviated to "towing" is an interesting expression local to Barnsley meaning "struggling". I'm guessing it originates from lifting something heavy, hence hurting ones groin. Any other theories/understandings?

A pit term that always intrigued me is ‘puffler’ meaning a charge hand or head of a team of miners. Never heard it anywhere else.

I've lost a lot of me Barnsley dialect but growing up round a pit family kept most of it in me even after the pits shut and we moved darn sarf (Cornwall near tin mines) Half of em dunt no what I'm guin on abart when I gu off on a neet art wi me dad. I still say to me Cornish mate "ar the guin art satdi neet" and they'll still ask me to clarify what I said.

Royston dialect is slightly but still markedly different from all the surrounding areas, they think its due to a large number of Black Country immigrants that came and settled in that area in the 1800s, the influx changed the accent.
