@@freneticness6927 not if it's drummed out of them young enough. There was still a massive stigma against regional accents in the 60s and 70s. Clarkson sounded very posh as a child. I also knew a much older chap from North Yorkshire, the former organist of York Minster, Francis Jackson (1917-2022), who told me how his family, teachers etc squashed his Yorkshire accent in early childhood and taught him to 'speak proper', as in the 1920s a regional accent was a serious impediment to social and professional standing. He could still sort-of do an impression of a Yorkshire accent when I knew him in his nineties, but it was far more affected and unbelievable than his posh RP. My father, who is three years older than Clarkson, was born and raised in Scotland (spent his first seven years in Glasgow, then moved to Dundee, before moving to Surrey at the age of twenty-eight). He has never, ever been able to do a remotely convincing Glaswegian or Dundonian accent. The only regional accent he can do is East Somerset, where one of his grandparents originally came from (but left half a century before my father was born, and had no trace of a Somerset accent)...

His "regional" accents amount to someone who sounds a lot like Himmler, a Brummy car builder, and the village idiot from Barnsley. Not extensive, but it does bring a smile to my face. And stop saying Cossa, we stopped buying them 30 years ago.

Thing is, no self-respecting Midlander would ever call Brum the 'Venice of the North', because prideful as we are of being neither North nor South, we make consistent and clear pains to avoid being identified as the South/North.

I’m thinking very few people can understand what Gerald says about anything. 🤣 I think he’s fantastic.

It’s nice to hear Clarkson’s natural Yorkshire accent. I’m also from Yorkshire and I can very easily relate since I and so many people in the area have that kind of dialect.

The definition of entertainment. Goodness, we had it good when JC was at TG during the 2002-2015 period. Small wonder the reformatted version of this motoring show attracted 350 million viewers. And actually made money for the BBC.
