“The Disaster Artist” is the true story of the making of the film “The Room,” which has been called “the Citizen Kane of bad movies.” Tommy Wiseau’s cult classic has been screening to sold-out audiences nationwide for more than a decade.
James Franco directed “The Disaster Artist” from a screenplay by Scott Neustadter & Michael H. Weber, based on the book by Greg Sestero and Tom Bissell. Franco leads the cast, along with Dave Franco and Seth Rogen. The ensemble also features Alison Brie, Zac Efron, Josh Hutcherson, Jacki Weaver, Ari Graynor, and Jason Mantzoukas.

The movie exaggerated the number of takes Tommy needed to get this shot finished (35 instead of, what is it, 67 or something like that?), but it's still mind boggling that it took *dozens* of takes for Tommy to get a simple shot of walking down some stairs while saying lines that he wrote!

"The Room's premiere was testament to Tommy's unrelenting drive and determination. He'd inflict his vision on the world whether the world wanted it or not. He was a movie star whether the world saw it or not. In getting here, Tommy had sometimes been destructive and sometimes cruel. But how could I-how could anyone-not be moved by Tommy, who'd fought so hard against the unforgiving confines of his star-crossed life? The Room, I already knew, was a lot of things. A bad film, a funny film, a bizarre film, a glorious film, a vain film, an absurd film, an incompetent film, a powerful film, a fascinating film, a disastrous film, an independent film, an inexplicable film, and finally, a brave film. Sitting there in the theater, I let myself feel proud of Tommy, who believed his movie was a first-rate emotional drama that contained all his most profound ideas about life. In that regard, The Room was Tommy, and is Tommy-a man who remains the grandest and most sincere dreamer I've ever known. This is, ultimately, what redeems his immensely conflicted and complicated darkness. In the end, Tommy made me realize that you decide who you become. He also made me realize what a mixed blessing that can be. Although I knew Tommy’s film wasn't going to be received the way he wanted it to be that night, I hoped he’d be able to recognize how incredible this experience really was. When I looked over at him, I couldn't help but see a vision of the young boy who peered through a movie theater's cracked door in Eastern Europe, newly in awe of life’s possibilities. Tommy removed his sunglasses and glanced back at me. He had tears in his eyes. He smiled, nodded, and turned toward the screen. It wasn't often that you got to see a man whose dream was literally about to come true, but then the lights went down, and I couldn't see him anymore." -Greg Sestero in "The Disaster artist"

You can tell James Franco is having the time of his life. He is enjoying each and every second he plays Tommy. How could it be otherwise, since The Room is a fantastic journey into the surreal and fascinating world as seen through the eyes of such different thinker as Tommy is? Being inside his head is a delightful experience per se, and James Franco just got the privilege of staying there and deeply explore such unique imaginery. I actually envy this guy. Dante Alighieri is a little third class passenger besides James.

If there’s one thing to take away from this scene, it’s that taking yourself too seriously robs you of the opportunity to play around and have fun on the set, turning what could have been a cute story in an endearing production into VH1 Tommy seems to be learning from his mistakes. Tommy is a thinker and dreamer, a unique man in a world that wants others to be cardboard cutouts. He broke the mold, fought for his dream in a belief of love. That his love for a dream could overcome reality, that in spite of his inherent darkness he could make himself into starlight. And he succeeded. That is the true beauty of the human spirit, ladies and gentlemen and all the technicolor rainbows in-between. Tommy Wiseau is....beautiful in soul and mind and inspiring in his struggle.

Wiseau hired someone to document the filming so he could do a behind the scenes thing for the DVD, turns out he was taking that footage home every night and watching it so he could find out what people were saying about him behind his back. And the moment of silence happened when someone made a disparaging comment (or something along those lines) about the United States and he made everyone stand silent and salute the flag for 5 minutes straight. And every time someone laughed or made a noise it started over until the five minutes was up. The entire crew quit half way through filming.

He also pissed off the crew so much that they walked not once but three times and refused to pay them saying "they were not professional" and were "trying to sabotage my movie," even when he knew months in advance that they had other commitments, and promised they'd have their scenes done in time or would hire more help, and they came close to pummeling the living daylights out of Tommy because of his BS

When this came out my friend and I who love the Room went to see it in theatres and we were completely alone. It was great. We're both introverts so we got to act dumb whenever we heard something funny

Explanations for how this film got financed 1. Tommy is Secretly Royalty from country too small to appear on a map 2. Tommy is secretly a mob boss 3. Tommy is a genius investor 4. Tommy works for the CIA 5. Tommy got a really big inheritance from his Great Aunt Margret
