Many people consider The Room to be the worst movie of all time. So why do thousands of people flock to midnight screenings of it every month?

Tommy Wiseau’s film The Room (2003) is by many accounts the worst movie ever made. The plot barely makes sense, the set design is comically inept, and most of the dialogue sounds like it was fed through Google Translate multiple times. Yet, for 14 years, people have been congregating at midnight screenings all across the globe to watch what some people call “the Citizen Kane of bad movies.”
Despite the film’s incoherency, audiences ritualistically throw plastic spoons, shout call and response lines at the screen, and toss around footballs in the aisles at monthly screenings. Knowing all the inside jokes and participatory cues gives viewers what sociologist Pierre Bourdieu termed “cultural capital.” People who know when to shout specific lines or when to hurl spoons are deemed Room veterans.
Contrary to what you may think, researchers have found that an appreciation of this kind of “trash cinema” can actually indicate higher levels of intelligence. Trash films share more characteristics with avant-garde art films than they do with typical commercial Hollywood fare. Audiences are drawn to both “trash” and “art” films for many of the same reasons, like their transgressive nature and their rejection of mainstream aesthetic norms.
Watch the video to know more about The Room and be sure to pick up Bissell’s book (that he co-wrote with Greg Sestero) to read many more legendary stories about the production of the “best worst movie.”
Special thanks to Stephen Goldmeier for permission to use his photo in the video.

What makes very bad movies good, IMO, is that they are unique in some way. The bad choices they make are different from what you normally see. What makes good movies bad, is that they are bland and derivative. They are like everything you've already seen, change nothing, and add nothing, and make you feel nothing.

The magic of "The Room" is that it's so INNOCENTLY bad. Tommy Wiseau was completely sincere in his efforts to make a legitimate dramatic film. All of the other actors are performing to the best of the amateurish abilities. The production was completely honest in its misguided efforts to build and advance drama and tension. It was just so perfectly off in all of its horrible decision making, like the video said, like a non-human trying to understand humans. It's also so fragile for that same reason. As soon as there's an ounce of awareness, of camp, satire or any other intention the whole concept and value of the film instantly evaporates. Then it's just an ordinary bad movie. It's why Tommy Wiseau can't ever make another film and why his later casting of the film as a "dark comedy" fell flat. He's now forever a caricature of his own creation.

One of the reasons bad movies are enjoyable is that they're great to pick apart and analyze, and you can really learn a lot about good films from watching them. Your typical Hollywood film is so seamless and polished that everything washes over you. You suspend your disbelief and sort of forget that a movie is the sum of a million parts/decisions/actions. But a bad movie jolts you out of that. As soon as you see a boom mike or realize that the actor's shirt has changed from red to green in the middle of the scene, you're reminded that a film is something a lot of people came together to make, and that people made certain (terrible) decisions making it. You start to wonder WHY they made a certain choice. Like, why does Tommy Wiseau have actors throw around a football for no reason in the middle of a movie? You start wondering if a decision was made because of ineptitude, lack of funds, time constraints, because the director was out of his mind because of a cocaine binge (which happened during one movie I worked on), etc. Also, thinking about why a movie fails can make you look critically at ones that are good. What makes a movie good? What makes one enjoyable? What makes dialogue work? What sounds dumb? The badness of movies like the room gives you a different perspective on moviemaking, and in a way, is sort of an education in how to make a good movie.

@masterman1001
@masterman1001 7 жыл бұрын
Ya know, there's something special to entertaining oneself with abysmal pieces of art, so you do have a point. But I couldn't take up a condescending stance towards a film who actually managed to do what a (mainstream) flick's intention should always be: It entertained quite a lotta people. Now sure, there's also flicks that are meant to make you think, to educate you, or just simply to show you something unconventional. But even then, they still do entertain us, even if it's just a "side-effect". So yes, while The Room was undoubtedly a film with horrible acting, a terrible script, and a lead who has yet to prove to be an actual human, it certainly cannot be considered unsuccessful. (not financially speaking. Although I assume some money has been earned over time, so they might even be in the plus, someday)

The Room is nowhere near the worst. In any way. It has a semi-coherent story, it has decent lighting, okay camerawork, and the "actors" are some times seen moving their lips when they speak. The Room is bad enough to be good bad, and much better than bad bad movies.

I think I like these kind of bad movies because it's very reminiscent of your average school play. They somehow create a sense of community and you feel like these terrible terrible actors could be people you know. It kind of immerses you into this world but instead of some big name actor it's like your uncle walking out there and spouting some shitty lines. That's what makes these terrible movies beautiful.

The Room is one of the most unique (and misogynist :/) films ever made, whether you consider it "the worst film ever made" or not. It happens to be my personal favourite, up there at least... it's like looking into the brain of what a man of another life and world (Tommy Wiseau) envisions the incredibly broken "American dream" to be, all in this immersive "school play"-esque community you perfectly describe.

Roshan, have you watched this scene, let alone the entire film? kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYC6dICrrL-JjLM All of them women (and characters) in the film are written solely *for*, and of course *from* the perspective of the perfect Tommy Wiseau (or Johnny, as portrayed in the film) I was surprised a few searches give one results regarding it, and watching the film should answer it for you unless you're desensitised to negative and stereotypical portrayals of women across the media. Breast cancer is a brief joke in the room. The movie is a joke, and I can admire it for all of its unintended, broken absurdity. "David Lynch couldn't make something that weird on purpose." www.wehuntedthemammoth.com/2012/04/26/tommy-wiseaus-the-room-an-unintentional-mra-classic/

Because it's so damn bad...its good. Truly one of my favorites because of its remarkable ineptitude.
