Don't have any thoughts about Davis, except indirectly, as follows: did it occur to you that perhaps he has a legitimate actual prescription for Adderall, or if he doesn't, he has undiagnosed ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)? From personal experience, I can assure you that it is not a performance enhancing drug, except to the extent that it can keep you awake when you otherwise would be asleep. However, in my case, it doesn't act as a stimulant in a useful way to be abused, as it often puts me to sleep if I take it early in the morning and haven't had enough sleep. And just in case you're wondering, I do have a legal prescription, but I was sufficiently unfortunate to remain undiagnosed with ADHD until past my 30th birthday, after I left graduate school. Hard to be diagnosed with a "learning disorder" when you eventually earned undergrad degrees in BOTH chemistry and physics, as well as a graduate degree in abstract math. But my life would have been seriously a lot less hard, and I would have been far more successful by conventional standards.

As a orioles fan, I’m sad to see him go. Also as an orioles fan, it was a huge mistake to pay him that much. We’re tied up with him. I’d love to see our team get back to being contenders again. We’re in one of the hardest divisions in baseball, with Toronto, NY, Boston, and Tampa usually being leaps and bounds better than us every year. But at least we had a glimmer of hope when Davis was in his prime, and we had manny, Britton, weiters, Jones, Jiminez (for one stellar season), trumbo, etc….hell, even Thome was in on the action for a year (that was a treat to get to see him dawn an orioles jersey). I hope to god we can get back to being a sneaky good team with a chance to fight for a trophy. It’s hard right now, but our farm system gives me a lot of hope. I’ll always hold Davis a special place in my love for Baltimore. I got to see him crush a few homers in his hay day. But those days are gone, and I wish him luck in his future. He will always be crush Davis to me. And every other Baltimore fan I’m sure.

Crush Davis was one of my heroes in the Showalter era as a long-time O's fan. He alongside Nick Markakis, Adam Jones, JJ Hardy, Matt Weiters, Manny Machado, Jim Johnson (before he kept blowing games), Steve Pearce, Nate McClouth for a few seasons, Nelson Cruz for a season, Jonathan Schoop, Zach Britton, Kevin Gausman, and others brought back winning baseball for an entire generation of fans in Baltimore starved for a good baseball team. I got hope in the rebuild with Mike Elias finally tapping in the international market and creating the new facility in the Dominican Republic. Guys like Cedric Mullins, Trey Mancini, Ryan Mountcastle, John Means, and Austin Hays have started to build a solid core with Adley Rutschman coming up real soon. Just not sure about how much longer Hyde will be the skipper. The rest of the pitching staff aside from Means has to improve if they want to compete anytime soon in the AL East.

Biggest mistake of the Showalter era: signing Davis and not keeping Cruz, Markakis--we let two great players walk--traded Machado for a bag of balls and wasted millions of dollars, paying Davis for what he had already done. You don't pay a guy a huge contract because he's put up great numbers in the past. You cut ties and get young and build up the farm system. I knew when the negotiations were happening it was a mistake. Meanwhile Nelson Cruz is old as the hills and still hits 25 dingers a year.

re-read the title: the disaster CONTRACT. from the start of his $160M contract, what Baltimore will being paying him for the next 15 years for zero production, he gave them only 4 seasons in which he averaged 0.190, 23HR, 57 RBI, 57 runs, 89 hits, and led the league in strikeouts once. those are numbers barely worthy of the league minimum, and Baltimore is paying $160M for it. explain how that's not one of the worst contracts of all time? it's not even a "decent career". he only had 3 good seasons and a bunch of mediocre to outright awful seasons. if the Orioles were paying him millions, he would have never played his last 2 years in the MLB. and i'm not even counting his 2020 season in any of this. i mean, a career 0.233 hitter who had 2.5 times as many strikeouts as RBI is not a "decent career".

The Orioles had a similar adventure in the early 1960's with a player named Dave Nicholson. They signed Nicholson to a record setting bonus baby contract. Nicholson was supposed to be a home run slugger, and he hit a pretty good number of home runs for his amount of times at bat, but he also set a record both for strikeouts in a season (since broken) and highest career strikeout rate (I believe still standing). He didn't actually last that long with the Orioles, as they traded him to the White Sox when he was still considered to be a promising young slugger, and got back Luis Aparicio. Like Davis, Nicholson had several seasons where he hit under .200. He was a very early example of the now common HR or K player.

Injuries. 99% of players will never live up to massive contracts. I'd argue most don't "deserve" Those sort of contracts ever unless the dude wins multiple Cy Youngs and 20+ Games and helps lead you to multiple World Series Titles(or appearances) or some amazing run of hitting through out the contract that again leads to personal and team awards. --- Trout....Amazing player....That angels team will never win anything but the fans like seeing him play, and it's probably (besides Ohtani) the reason fans even show up so he is bringing money into the stadium. End of the day though, you ask for what you think you are worth and you should never undervalue yourself because you never truly know (Especially sports) when it can suddenly end so I have no issue with players getting as much as they can from someone if they are willing to pay them. Player has to be able to accept any criticism (and it will come) because of how much he is making especially in a sport where you fail more than you succeed. The owners have to accept that they could potentially lose their jobs over these contracts because moving those sort of contracts are damn near impossible once youve given them and almost certainly won't pay you back at the tail end of them. Davis earned himself a big contract, he was pretty damn good...and then it all fell apart. That's life and that's baseball. Winning solves a lot of issues though.

In 2014, Orioles had both Davis and Nelson Cruz on their roster. Cruz had gotten suspended for 50 games in 2013 for his link to the Biogenesis scandal, and Texas had given him a $14 million qualifying offer, which he turned down, opting to test free agency instead. This worked out great for the Orioles, who signed him on a 1-year deal for $8 million, an absolute steal. Cruz led the Orioles in 2014 with 40 homers. However, Cruz was also a great clubhouse mentor, particularly for the younger Latino players like Manny Machado. With that in mind, it felt like Cruz was an integral part of the offense and an important player to re-sign. The Orioles didn't re-sign him. Cruz wanted a 4-years and the Orioles wouldn't offer more than 3. He signed with the Mariners for 4 years and $57 million where he'd hit .302 with 44 HRs and 93 RBIs in 2015. Chris Davis by all accounts was a good clubhouse guy, too, at least while he was still hitting dongs, but he didn't have the same impact on the younger players. The general consensus was that the Orioles would try to keep both players, but re-sign one if the other were to leave. I really wanted the Orioles to re-sign Cruz and I thought at the time that the unwillingness to offer him 4 years was really stupid, as it was pretty clear that Cruz had a lot left in him and 4 years wouldn't be much of a stretch, while signing him for that term would also probably benefit them by getting a deal done at a lower price per year (Cruz would go on to sign with the Twins for a 1-year $14.3 million deal in 2019, so 4 for $57 million was still not a bad deal). But by letting Cruz go, suddenly the urgency to re-sign Davis had increased. Here's where it gets really crazy: the Orioles proceeded to enter into a bidding war with themselves. The Orioles seemed to be tossing offers at Davis, whose agent (none other than Scott Boras) kept rejecting. The reports were that nobody was interested in Davis, probably because the Orioles' opening offer was far too much money for far too long for a guy of his age. Yet out of sheer determination, I guess, the Orioles kept offering him more money. I have no idea why. But I think the Davis signing was about when the friction between GM Dan Duquette and the manager Buck Showalter really started to ramp up. The gap in team strategy/philosophy between the two seemed to be growing larger, and having dumped all that money into the Davis signing, there wasn't much for the front office left to do but let the other pieces fall to the wayside. This culminated in the Orioles waiting way too long before trading Manny Machado for a bag of balls (I'm only kidding, it was 5 prospects) to the Dodgers in 2018. Pretty much everyone thought that it was too many years, and too much money, even dumb fans like me. Everyone was dumbfounded by how they were bidding against themselves. The Orioles were *good* under Buck Showalter after so many years of being bad, and I'm almost positive there was an ultimatum from ownership to sign him at any cost. The big mistake was letting Cruz go in the first place. And that was pretty obvious even before the Davis deal got done.
@rars0n
@rars0n 2 жыл бұрын
It's also worth noting that 99% of Davis' plate problems were mental. Age and injury had nothing to do with him not producing as he still easily hit homers when he made contact with the ball. Batting turned into a game of blindly guessing for him. He had absolutely no idea what pitches were coming or where they were headed. He'd swing at balls that bounced over the plate and just stare at pitches thrown right down the middle. He never once got back into a hitting rhythm once he started struggling, not even for a few games. After *years* of playing his hitting *never* returned to normalcy. Some people suggest that perhaps it was the weight of the contract looming over his head, raising expectations of himself and wanting to deliver for the fans. But I think if that were the case, he would have eventually returned to some kind of version of his former self.

I would submit Carl Pavano's Yankee contract. 3 years, 30 million. He spent 3 years with the Yankees mostly on the DL, pitched in 26 games with a record of 9-8 with a 5.00 ERA. As a Yankee fan I might be biased, but you have to admit it was a disaster. Derek Jeter was quoted to have said to him, "Are you ever going to play? Ever?" Ouch. Kei Igawa's 5 years for 20 million on top of the 26 million they paid his Japanese team comes close too. Igawa's stats: 2 years, 2-4 record with a 6.66 ERA in 16 games.

The one thing I disagree with is the notion that Davis wasn't an "on-base" hitter. For four seasons in a row, he walked 60 or more times and always had an on-base percentage that was 100 or more points over his batting average, indicating that he was actually pretty good at getting on base. Even his career on-base percentage of .315 is admirable given his career .233 batting average. Similar to and in the vein of a guy like Adam Dunn, who had very similar production, just over a much longer period of time. I will say Dunn walked a ton more than Davis did, which helped him in his later years when his batting average and home run totals naturally decreased. But, no amount of walks could ever make up for batting averages of .168 (2018) and .179 (2019). Ultimately, Davis just couldn't square the ball up like he used to, which negated any effectiveness he could've had as a guy with average to above-average walk totals. It was simply a matter of the fact that he lost his approach and confidence at the plate completely after 2016. One of the more disappointing careers of the 2010s, despite hitting nearly 300 home runs.

I would pick Jacoby Ellisbury's contract over everyone else's contract as the worst signing ever! That includes Albert Pujol's, Josh Hamilton's, Vernon Well's, and even Mike Hampton's. Heck Chris Davis would be a spot or two spots behind Jacoby Ellisbury's contract as the worst signing ever. That 7 yr contract only fetch 520 games worth. The Yankees still have to pay him $5 mil for 2021 to buy out his player's option after paying Ellisbury for the 7 years worth of his gawd awful contract. At least Chris Davis has the decency to retire.

It's easy to see: he had the LONGEST swing in this century. He dragged the bat through the zone, sticking his arm out toward the third base line. If someone could have gotten through his head to keep the "triangle" going for as long as you can, he would have had a few more good years (even though his strike zone judgement would still have been "swing if it's pitched").

@Italkstudios, Not exactly like Bobby Bonilla, because Davis, contract is not getting paid with interest to keep up with inflation like Bonilla’s contract. So in that sense his contract is actually be worth a lot less than what he signed for because it’s steadily loosing value over the next 15 years or so due to inflation.

As a Yankee fan it was rather painful to see him struggle the way he did. I am of the opinion that the game of Baseball is a very very difficult and humbling game to play. If you do play the game you will fail, sometimes miserably. That being said, I truly feel awful to see any player struggle beyong the pale. Today, for me that player is Joey Gallo. He is hitless or near hitless in many at bats with not a lot of HR's to speak off. I become embarrassed for players like Davis and Gallo and I guess the take away is they will never struggle to make ends meet again. That is more awesome than failing at the game.

I actually think the Heyward contract is worse for one reason. Elite power hitters are rare even if they are a one tool player. 50+ HR hitters don't grow on trees especially in the tested era. They took a shot and it failed. Heyward on the other hand was signed to a massive contract by a team that was full of talented position players, but lacked pitching. Heyward is essentially a light hitting center fielder taking up a corner outfield position.
