I have zero respect for anyone that scams and takes advantage of the elderly. My grandfather once received a call from a scammer, saying that his grandson just died in a car accident and they needed money for the funeral. This sounds ridiculous to many, as this is never how funerals and contacting family about passed loved ones, but for someone with dementia, it pulls on their emotions and literally messes them up. The scammers said my name to him, mentioned my parents, and my wife, and said just enough to make it sound real. He thankfully didn't give any money, as he was no longer at the state of mind to handle his finances, and his daughter was the power of attorney taking care of it all, but it still messed up my grandfather for a good while. called my phone, thinking he was calling my brother, and when I said it was me, he kept saying that no, he's dead, I was told he's dead, and I had to do everything to try and calm him down and reassure him that I am myself, and I am not dead. Had to leave work early just to see him in person.

My 64 year old mom got scammed the other day trying to pay her AT&T bill and she accidentally went to a site that just claimed to connect to her account, but actually just stole $250 from her and tried to get more, but the bank blocked it. I often wonder how much the actual workers know. Now obviously some of the more malicious scams where they’re actively editing html code and tricking people to get gift cards, those people are clearly aware and criminally inclined. But these tech support ones where they’re charging for fake software installation and fake software scanning it’s possible the day to day phone folks don’t realize it’s all smoke and mirrors because they are actually doing SOMETHING. I have no idea what any of this stuff Jim explains in this video means so if I started working there at that scam center and the boss told me to run x and install y when you see xyz and charge x amount of dollars I’d probably just shrug and go “if you say so” thinking I’m just doing a tech job.

And so last Christmas, kids were taken from my parents and that was gonna be their first real Christmas with my grandma and that didn’t get to happen, my husband and I actually ended up being in a very good spot where we ended up getting everyone something. They all live in California, My husband and I, live clear across the United States, so we can’t even visit. I told my grandma what to do and honestly, no one else tried helping her. Her own brother said, “Oh well, let her learn her lesson.” And he’s actually very good with technology and has his own business. It’s sad the way everyone there treats her. I did tell her to come live with me but she won’t leave because apparently they all “need” her. (On another note tho, I love how you stood up for this elderly man and told them scammers off. Seeing such a kind, helpless person be taken advantage of by someone they trusted; is enough to get most people’s blood boiling. Then add on top that the scammer tried to *lie to his face*. No way that anger is just an act.

Or the disabled. We're still trying to figure out how to stop the charges my homecare client is getting on their account. Their family is having to call the bank almost monthly to try to get bogus charges reversed. Client's social security was deposited on the first, even before anything was spent charges started coming off their card. When a family member got ahold of the bank the first time to see where all the money was going they found that this had been going on for several months sometimes a few times a day and there were no red flags issued with the bank.

And even when they get them, the battle just begins and the lawyers get into action (and I'm sure these scammers have lawyers as well). And since these scams often happen over borders, I can imagine the cases being quite complicated.

@@SharkAcademy It's not the tech that's the problem. A lot of people don't understand coding, firewalls, and computer maintenance/repair. But they still have the ability to recognize the scam. That's what's going to kill that industry because at the moment their victims are almost always people who grew up with little to no technology and the technology they did have was fixed in person by someone. Tomorrow I could get a call about something that I know virtually nothing about being wrong with my laptop and I'd still be able to recognize the scam and most people are the same. @Lux Aeterna Believe me, hon. I do spread the word as do others in my circle. We have an online community forum on which we post incidents of scamming & plain old dishonest business practices. Sad that we have only ourselves to rely on with most of these situations--meaning, we can't go to the police or even elected representatives and expect any protection from them. Although, if I think a business has ripped me off, I will write a complaint to FTC or local consumer protection agency--all I've done is make a record, no one is going to jump up and interrogate the bad guy. This is not what I envisioned doing in my retired life.

I think the word you are looking for is immoral ie actively acting against moral norms. tbf some of those people are quite young and in desperate need for money. they may have little to no idea about what the company actually does and they would sign the papers . it isnt until later that they find out and even so they cant do anything because they are bound by a contract and it is too expensive to terminate the contract. there have been instances where these people felt guilty and wanted the operation to stop so they contact youtubers like jim browning, pleasant green etc. but what they do is very risky as the companies sort of blacklist the whistle blower and send people after them to beat them up.
