All of my DLT strops use only rough side leather. But the extent of the roughness is different piece by piece. If your strop has a different surface on each side, I think the white compound will work better on the rougher side because it makes a slippery surface which doesn't take an edge well more easily on the smoother surface. The black compound is prone to making a thicker layer which takes an edgy well by itself. Thanks.

Bark River black and white compounds. They are abrasives. Black is coarse and White is very fine. Thanks.

Thank you for your insights. I use Bark River white compound on the rough side of my DLT strop (12,000 grit). On the smooth side I use 0.5 micron CBN (32,000 grit). I have a another strop with a black and green Bark River compounds sides. These two have been my main strops.

I have learned so much about knives and knife-sharpening from your videos, and enjoyed very much your outdoor videos. One of the main reasons I log into youtube everyday is to see you have posted a new video. Thank you so much.

Thanks for making the vid, my DLT has that rougher leather on it and it really does make it MMMMMM....scary sharp..lol, i just did my first reprofiling on a spyderco tenacious and i have to say that im a convex convert, love the ease of maintenance and the strength, envelopes just fly open now. Your vids have helped me a great deal in my knife venture, all the best......ss13.

My DLT strop also seems to have a rough and smooth side. Thanks for the video!

@bigboss1990 I have ever used 100% ethanol other than 80% sanitizing ethanol. The dehydrated ethanol more efficiently removed the compounds, but it is much pricey. I now use it entirely for wiping optical lenses. It never leaves a stain on lenses at all. I have never used 3M fabric or some for brushing leather. I was using a gauze in this video. Thank you!

My DLT Two Sided Paddle Strop has no differences between each side of the leather. I don't use the green compound but the white compound instead. I like the white compound making a shiny surface and like finishing my edges on it gently. Judged from my preference a finer compound should be applied to a smoother side. Thanks.
@jn37507 жыл бұрын
You said below that the white (finer) compound should be applied to the rougher surface. A contradiction. What gives?

Remember that solvents like alcohol will also remove the natural oils from the leather making it drier and more likely to have cracking. Neatsfoot oil, tallow or silicone will prevent this.

@y4949 You might be correct. I did it just on my choice. Thank you!

You can get them online from DLT Trading in the US.

@dilbertfungoing We have many damascus options as a side steel in Japanese knives. But it raises the price much. For that money I can purchase another knife. And I can see some damascus blades in the world which don"t have sandwich construction like a Japanese one. I am curious how their edge holds. So I basically don't go for the damascus blades. Thank you!

@virtuovice results will vary. The advantage to the rough side is that it acts more like a buffing wheel where the compound Fills the space between the fibres until you get a nice uniform cutting layer (more like a flexible stone) where-as the smooth side cannot accept compound, and it floats on top like grit.. this means you cannot refine as well IMO.. its like having slurry on top of a stone. i personally never use a smooth side. the rough side always gives me an Easier result..
@AdyKing12 жыл бұрын
I bought the same strop and black / white paste. And I right in saying the white is finer and should go on the rough side, black is more aggressive and goes on the sooth side?
@virtuovice11 жыл бұрын
An old strop makes a smooth and hard surface and it is better for finishing up the edge like touching up with a fine ceramic stone in my experience. A new rougher surface is nicer for polishing up the edge bevel. It is the stropping and a new one is better generally speaking. Thanks.
@virtuovice13 жыл бұрын
@nexusdb I don't think genuine smooth side leather will do anything. The KSF leather strop has a smoother surface but it must have some finish to take compounds. Thanks.

The compound will apply better if you warm up the compound with a hair dryer until it glides on the leather...kinda lays & stays like a crayon on paper! The compound sticks deeper & better when its heated up when applying👍👍

@traderjoes But I don't know correctly which side is for which compound. Thanks.

After 11 years do you still use the Bark River compounds? I've been using them for 2 months with excellent results. Best stuff I've ever used.

Have you tried compound remover? It's used by Jewelers.

Good video. When cleaning the compound, what do you use to scrub it down. Do you just pour the ethanol on it or do you scrub it with something

I just got my dlt strop and the paper from bark river that came with it says i should use the black compound on the rough side and the green compound on the smooth side. I curious about your opinion on that.

Enkay compounds feel more sticky and prone to making a slick surface. Bark River compounds match the DLT leather perfectly.

I recently received my DLT double sided paddle strop and I must report that it is not satisfactory. The leather is uneven ( not the knap or fuzziness ) I mean the piece of junk has valleys in the leather so I don't get even close to a flat stropping surface. I also noticed that the DLT web site must have been designed and built by some not very gifted highshcool student. Very disappointing and I will be looking elsewhere for my sharpening supplies and I would certainly never buy a knife there.
