3:40 When the show first started I thought the Doctor was a lame concept. But over 7 years he really grew on me. He became one of my favorite characters. This episode and the one in which the Doctor saves the legacy of Voyager on an alien planet just awesome. How could you lose the Doctor. He is a program and would have a backup. Despite Star Trek being loved by tech geeks, the writers didn’t understand basic computing principles.
@cScottD7 ай бұрын
I could be wrong, but I thought they established in TNG that once a program became sentient, it could no longer be copied, only moved.
@jamesbizs7 ай бұрын
@@cScottDwell, voyager also had an episode where his backup was lost and found on another planet….
@thomasschulz21677 ай бұрын
Yes he's a program, but through the series it was brought up several times that his program matrix was too large for a proper backup to be completely and properly duplicated. There just was not enough of the specially formatted memory for a duplicate to inhabit. It's like trying to duplicate a program that exists solely on an almost full thumbdrive that was designed to only house that one instance of the program. Now other compatible systems could run or store his program, but you run the risk on there being irrecoverable packet loss if the second system is not as capable. More advanced tech like his Mobile Emitter or the Prometheus's Computer system, are probably backwards compatible or built with the required additional hardware. I'm pretty sure the Prometheus's systems were designed to be able to have entire medical and support teams holographically bolster the crews numbers. Which makes sense, as there are places where a holographic damage control team can go that a biological crew member can't. Like patching hull breaches for example.

Aw, "Message in a Bottle" was such a good episode!! I'm told it was the only writing/directing credit for one person, and widely agreed to be one of the best episodes of the series. It's the one episode we never overwrote with the next week's episode. We recorded the next week further along the same tape, or used a new tape. For a long while, this was the only episode we could watch to reilve any of Voyager, and I still think it was a good choice.

I dismissed Voyager at the outset. Then I thought about how I would feel if I were in their situation; lost and far from home, cut off from everyone and everything I know, and surrounded by strange and often hostile beings. In all honesty, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t survive that scenario.

The ship is in the Beta Quadrant. I always found it odd no one ever seemed to mention the Beta Quadrant throughout the whole show
@NeonVisual Жыл бұрын
The federation extends across both the alpha and beta quadrants, with the Klingon and Romulan space taking up most of the beta quadrant, and with the Gamma and Delta mostly unexplored. So until they can explore the furthest two quadrants they just divide the galaxy up into 4 so they can send deep space exploration vessels to gamma and delta. There's no need to specify a huge chunk of the galaxy as the beta quadrant because they already know the layout of those particular species. So, in this case the federation ship was mid way between alpha and beta, having left federation space and heading to the Romulan neutral zone. By the time Voyager got home they had mapped out huge chunks of the delta quadrant, so from that point onward the federation would refer to the explored parts of the delta quadrant by the species that inhabits it, such as Borg space, Kazon space, etc. They would only still call the unmapped parts "the delta quadrant". In DS9 they had barely begun exploring the gamma quadrant before the founders started a war as the wormhole was in their space, so they continued to call it the gamma quadrant the whole time.
@biocapsule7311 Жыл бұрын
That's because the convention of how they quartered the galaxy on a map is base on where Earth is. The Federation is in both Alpha and Beta because the line that separate Alpha and Beta is where Earth is. Like how our traditional modern world map looks the way it does because it is center on the UK, at the time the largest empire in the world. The map depicts what is left and what is right of London. The whole Alpha Beta thing is a Federation convention depicting the the rest of the galaxy from what is left and right of Earth, then go forward.
@andrewshouse9840 Жыл бұрын
They did mention it a few times. I think one mentionn was in the Doctor as secret agent episode late season 7.
@ffnbbq Жыл бұрын
Because they didn't want to confuse the audience, mainly. DS9 also stuck to referring to our side of the galaxy as "the Alpha Quadrant" and the war being over that, even though half of the Federation is in the Beta Quadrant, along with the Klingons and Romulans* *Quite how the Dominion was able to use Romulan space to attack the Federation when the Romulans were on the other side of the galaxy is uh, unknown.
@WaterCrane Жыл бұрын
As far as I know, while the divide between the Alpha and Beta Quadrants passes through the Sol System, most of the Federation's major hubs are in the Alpha Quadrant, such as Vulcan. It also contains Bajor (and, by extension, Deep Space Nine and the Bajoran Wormhole) and the Cardassian Union. The Beta Quadrant, on the other hand, is largely dominated by the Klingon and Romulan Empires.
