This song was put on an album a a filler song and was never intended to be released as a single. Black Water is very different than most of their songs that range through rock, blues, R & B, jazz and about anything else you can think of! They have had 2 #1, 5 top 10 and 27 top 100 Billboard Hot 100 songs over the years and are still playing!

The ending consists of "three part harmony"...where each singer is singing a different verse, slightly out of time with the others so that they weave together a beautiful tapestry of sound. One person is singing, "I'd like to hear some funky dixieland, pretty mama come and take me by the hand" and keeps repeating that, while the next singer is singing, "by the hand...take me by the hand...come and dance with your daddy all night long", then the third voice chimes in with, "hand...pretty mama...with you all night long". If you listen again, you'll be able to pick out the different parts each person is performing. Three part harmony is amazing!

You can see how Folk, Jazz, Blues and Country have imprinted their genetics into Rock creating psychedelic, southern, progressive, Texas Rock, and even progressive rock.

The song is about building a raft after harvest and floating down the Mississippi with all your produce etc. to be sold in the markets of New Orleans. Then spending some of your hard earned dough on some fun while down there before traveling back up the river to home. This was what people did in the 1880's or so. also Splash Mountain was a ride that tried to capture some of the American folklore of "Uncle Remus". Which were popular kids stories when I was a kid and before then.

For all it's worth, my clearest memory associated with this song was when I around 17 years old, taking a trip to a lake Erie beach, going to drink a few beers with a few friends- the guitarist of my band brought his acoustic... unlike our song catalogue, Sean started strumming this, and there were like 8-10 of us belting out the vocals of this classic at dusk, ending with us all smiling and happy. There was very little reflection, because nothing needed to be said. We finished our beers and got home safely...

Music back in the 70's and early 80's had a soul to it.

On the 70s TV show What’s Happening the gang got to see the Doobie Brothers in concert and meet them backstage. Rerun shakes one of their hands and says “which Doobie you be?” Lmao

The Doobies are sometimes classified as “Southern Rock” or a “Southern Boogie Band” but they were actually based in California and part of the California Sound movement

Brear rabbit , briar bear, brair fox all from the Disney movie "Song of the South". main character was Uncle Reamus. 1st movie I ever saw in a theater, it was in the early 70's. Zipadee-do-dah Zippe-ay my oh my what a wonderful day, plenty of sunshine heading my way, Zipp-ah-di-do-da Zipp-ah-di-ay. dang Lex bringing that up brought a tear to my eye, made me think about my grandma who left us in 1998.

This is the only song where the first time I heard it knew...knew...that it was going to #1. It did.

As a 45 rpm record this track was originally issued as the flip side of a track that was intended for airplay. The deejays flipped that record and made this song a hit!

My first concert back in the 80's was Joe Walsh opening for The Doobie Brothers. Amazing.

You have to remember that this song was released in 1974. Different vibes goin on back then. Things were more laid back. There wasn't a need for urgency to get things done
