This song is one of the high water marks of their career, especially this live version. It's the creative culmination of what their original intentions were when they formed the band, marrying rock with theater and poetry. It's hypnotic, erotic, and totally original. In the right frame of mind it can spur your soul, making you want to dance around a fire in some sacred grove, or try something that would terrify your inner child.

Hypnotic, erotic and totally original also describes Jim Morrison...our Lizard King, our Shaman, who helped us to Break on Through.....took us on that Moonlight Drive to the Crystal Ship. I wish there was a musical time machine so we could go back and see The Doors in concert. I was only 9 when Jim died...a year later my dad passed. But over the years I came to truly appreciate their amazing music.

The lyric is an excerpt from “The Celebration of the Lizard”, a Jim Morrison poem that was going to take up the first side of “Waiting for the Sun” (1968). “Not to Touch the Earth” (1968) was the only part of the 24-minute song that was compelling enough to put on the album. The entire 133-line poem was included on the sleeve. Morrison lifted the title, and also the line “Not to see the sun,” from “Aftermath : A Supplement to the Golden Bough” (1936), an addition to the 1890 book “The Golden Bough : A Study in Magic and Religion.” Both works were authored by Sir James George Fraser (1854 - 1941), a Scottish social anthropologist. The words “Dead presidents corpse in the driver’s car” refer to the assassination of US President John F. Kennedy (November 22, 1963). One of Morrison’s famous lines appears at the end of the song : “I am the Lizard King, I can do anything.” “Lizard King” was one of his nicknames. 💙🦎💜 You have not been forgotten, James Douglas Morrison (1943 - 1971)… 🌹

However, Jim has that spiritual connection to instantly draw familiar souls to listen to him. I think it is so because he knew that we all have some pain and sufferings in us. I love how he showed his pain, concern , sensitivity, his vulnerability, his madness on stage. He was probably more real on stage than off stage.
