Everyone in the band was phenomenal at what they were doing. This a love song to Los Angeles. They use LA as a metaphor for women often. Jim loved the night life and he used to hangout at a little road house in the hills. The same roadhouse from "Roadhouse Blues", I believe. They tore it down a few years ago. Sitting and drinking in the bar, gotta go, cars of people driving home. The early morning and the street lights are starting to turn off. Your a little dazed walking outside drunk, but you don't really want to go home. Still one place to go. Let me sleep in the city, warm my mind in the HEART of the city. The real heart of every kitchen is the stove. Turn me away and it's ok, I'll wander in the neon light, reflecting off the orange groves. They used to be everywhere back in the day. I like it as it shows a quiet confidence in ones self, and where he is right then. Just let life wash over you. It's alright. That's my interpretation of it, anyway.

There was a soul food place in LA that was great and affordable that Jim went to a lot when he was a UCLA dropout living on the roof of a building. Ray the late Doors keyboard player talked about how amazing the food was. Everything was made from scratch by old older black woman. Ray said nothing in her restaurant came out of a can ever. Jim used it to set his life at the time "stumbling in a neon grove" was walking down the streets watching all the cars and stop lights. Jim left it up to the listener to wonder if a soul kitchen was a woman's body, we all know where babies come from and they are born with a soul. It is a great play on old rock and roll and blues songs like a "One eyed cat peeking in a seafood store" but more nuanced. The Doors 1st album is a masterpiece from start to finish. Jim was a amazing talent but he needed the other Doors to get the concert he wrote in his head on tape. Love the reaction, I was the same way in 1981 when I found an old 8-track tape of the Doors 1st album. I was 11 and it blew my mind.

Jamal, you have gotten me through the Covid blues. I'm so happy I found your channel! For real! You have a heart and an ear, and just a love of music beyond borders that I admire so much. My fav is Zeppelin, grew up on them, and i ain't old- LOL, You wanna hear some great Doors? Not sure if I saw you review these, but, 5 to 1, Unknown Soldier, and When The Music's Over are where it's at. The absolute best of the best. You seem to like blues, me too. I promise, worth a listen! Thanks again for bringing joy to everyone!

This is literally about a soul food restaurant Jim used to go to. Love this song, it conveys with the music a warm casual atmosphere.

The song is about Olivia's, a soul food restaurant in Venice Beach that Jim frequented. They used to have to kick him out. This was his tribute. I suppose it could be viewed as a double entendre, but the restaurant story is true.👍

Jim used to go to a soul food place in LA to just relax and relieve pressure. He loved that place, he was comfortable. Enough so, to write a song.

Omg....I haven't even thought about this song probably since the 70's Used to dance our asses off in high school to this. Junior Year I was in charge of theme and decorations and our theme was Flower Power lots of Doors

I think it's like getting in your kitchen--you know, close to home, right where you live, where you eat--and then that means he's talking about the heart of your soul...the place in your soul where you're most real and where it gets fed. So in Jim's poetic way he was just saying he wanted to get next to your pure essence, baby. :)

A big piece of the song is the atmosphere it creates. The Doors did that so well. It is big part of the reason I am such a fan. Another song that creates and atmosphere is "Summer's Almost Gone." The song captures the languor of a hot summer day so well. Not one of their better known songs but a personal favorite of mine. Try it out.
