I have been shooting muzzle loading shotguns, ever since i read the article by Ted Trueblood, editor of Field and stream magazine fame. My shotgun is a CVA turkey double 12ga. My loading is inspired by Ted Trueblood. I use 1 oz of #7 or #7.5, 90gr loose RS Pyrodex and a one piece, 1 oz plastic shot cup, topped by a thin overshot wad for most types of small game. The CVA seems to have a slightly tighter barrel on the right than the left. The plastic shot cup is the same as used in a modern 12ga shotguns. It keeps the grouping much tighter than not using one and works great. I replaced the #11 nipples like on all my muzzle loading rifles with musket cap nipples. Hotter spark excellent ignition. Something that i always do is rotate barrels. I fire the right barrel, reload it. fire the left barrel, reload it. This way I always have a loaded barrel just in case. It also is a major cure for loaded barrels that shake loose when you fire the same barrel many times without firing the other loaded barrel. If anyone is curious, you can see the video i made 11 -12 years ago on my channel and how i load the CVA 12ga muzzle loading shotgun.

It pays to experiment with loads in a muzzleloading shotgun. I tried shot cups in mine and the patterns did not improve. Others have great results as you did.

I've been loading black powder shotshells for my old Stevens model 94C 16 gauge. Hope to shoot something with it eventually.

I just realized who you were sir. I emailed you with some questions awhile back, and you replied with answers. I love my Pedersoli, side x side. These guns shoot #3 buckshot out to 40 yards very well too. I took a large doe, in front my beagles, last season at 40 paces.

Happy to help. Hunting deer with beagles, sounds like a lot of fun! I like the Pedersoli percussion shotguns, those are the best ones available at this time.

Nice video, thank-you. Had a Navy Arms same as yours & I've always wondered if, in firing the first barrel, the shot column in the second advanced somewhat due to recoil. Whatchathink? And what wads are you using? I used a cushioned paper wad between powder & shot. It's many layered & I could split off a bit with a thumbnail using 3/5th or so as the shot cushion & the remainder as the over the shot wad. Thanks again Sir.

It could, if the wads and cards do not fit properly. I put the ramrod into the unfired barrel while reloading just to check that. But it has not happened yet. I did a lot of load development on the pattern board to find the best combination of wads for my gun. It is choked mod and IC. I get the best patterns with this combination; a nitro card over powder, half of a lubed cushion wad, a thin overshot card, shot, and an over shot card I punch from sheet cork. The sheet cork I get from hobby lobby, all the other wads are Circle fly. Half a cushion wad with a thin over shot card on it is what it took to eliminate the occasional doughnut hole in the center of the pattern. Every gun is different, and what patterns best in one may not in another. I tried all the pet loadings I had heard of, Sky Chief, Star, you name it. And none of those worked as well as what I listed above.

@@traditionalmuzzleloader4983 Appreciate the response.Thanks. Mine was cylinder bore, so I had to keep whispering to my duck hunting buddies who load their guns from the wrong end with those plastic & brass suppository thingies to "Wait...wait. Let them get closer..."

This is proof that you do not need a left-handed gun because no matter how you shoot at the Lock Plate will be near your eye with a double barrel

Can you make a video about how and what you are loading in your BP shotgun? Waddings, powder ect.

I will add it to my list of projects. I have spent a lot of time shooting on the pattern board in order to find loads that pattern well. You might check out the article on loading shotguns and smoothbores on my website; traditionalmuzzleloader.com
