I’ve been a fan of Wu Jinyan since Yanxi palace, Also loved Royal Feast despite the bad reviews, but she really shines in the Double. Episode 11 was so riveting, powerful, sober and beautiful when she played the Qin. It was like watching am opera. She conveyed so much raw emotion without uttering a single word. 10’s across the board. Everyone was exceptional in their characters

Double is almost a perfect drama. It is head and shoulder ABOVE Love like the galaxy - where the FL went for 3 lovers before choosing one. So many dramas feature the FL and ML always fighting among themselves before miraculously marry. None of that here. She loved her ex-husband but he went for wealth/power and try to murder her. She then slowly fell in love with the ML but did not go for the cousin, or other suitors - that is why this drama is so successful, similar to Find Yourself.

Love like the Galaxy is a completely different show with an entirely different setup and execution. How is it fair to compare the two? It is like comparing a toyota camry to a nissan titan. Both are vehicles, but are usually bought for different reasons.

I agree with you and it's coming from someone who enjoyed a lot TTEOTM and Love Like the Galaxy but The Double is the absolute BEST one!!! It's no wonder it's the biggest blockbuster this year and was sold to Netflix and Disney+! Also it's the first cdrama to go Top 10 on Netflix main shows!!!! Like this drama has EVERYTHING in it and the chemistry between the main leads played by Wu Jinyan and Wang Xingyue is simply off the chart, on and off the screen!!! Apparently they will come back in the upcoming years for another two dramas. Can't wait!!

At last, a truly smart, strong, independent FL. None of that trying to be cute rubbish, abrasive and loud FLs who constantly try to outdo the ML, pouting and defiant attitude. So many of these portrayals in Cdramas insult women. Writers who are stuck in a time warp. And actresses who just can’t interpret and put their own essence of strength, intelligence and independence into their roles. Directors who shd support intelligent interpretations and not run-of-the-mill unflattering and ridiculous tropes. Here in The Double, we have a truly strong, smart, independent woman. Portrayed by WJY with great composure, elegance, understated vibrancy, steely resolve without petulance and abrasiveness. Her exchanges with the ML are a delight to watch. And the ML exudes just the right amount of aloofness but also concern and chivalry. Please, please let us have more of these portrayals. And I hope the day arrives when Cdramas are clear in their genre distinctions. It seems that the majority of dramas feel it is necessary to pollute good storylines with too much love mushiness. It was tempered so well here. Keep the mushiness and cringeness to the romance and rom-come genres. Do it to death there but please don’t overload on it in the other genres. I had hoped to see Chinese entertainment secure modern culture dominance but I despair at how producers, directors and writers are sending it down the black hole.

I cried when she played the zither in epi 37 I could feel her pain and sorrow. Lost You Forever is also an excellent show a great tearjerker. Both actresses are phenomenal. I can't wait for the last few episodes to see what happens. The hubby is a goner already I see it in his eyes the actor is doing a wonderful job but of course the ML I have always liked his stuff.

I am sooo sooo so loving The Princess Royale. And The Double was good too. The Princess Royale has some of the most emotionally honest conversations I have seen in a drama. Stuff divorced or divorcing couples would say in a hopeful but emotionally-fraught conversation. So good.

Thank you for a great review. 😍I love chinese drama, but the amount of episodes always scare me. Lol. However, I love Story of Yanxi Palace, so I give it a chance. I love it until the open ending. I wish they will have a full episode of them living happily ever after. Thankful for the 5 minutes epilogue or I would not have survive. This drama certainly became one of my favorites. I really recomended. ❤

Thank you for your review. Have watched Chinese dramas on Viki and Netflix, but lately my KZbin algorighm keeps bringing up titles, so I'm taking note of the new/monthly titles and with so much choice, it's hard to keep up. Loved The Double! The ending Viki provided (wonder which ending Netflix will have?) was Xiao Heng reuniting with Jiang Li, but probably in a dream of/or in the afterlife. However, did see stills/thumb nails of the ending with the daughter (and the body guards now as her babysitters? Episodes with them babysitting the little girl, who takes after both parents, could be hilarious). Understand that the Viki ending was a way to "uncouple" for individual actor's fans? And that different endings were shot. I was totally into the CP/couple. Can see similarities to Love Like the Galaxy, but this was a more mature and a revenge take while that was more an action teenaged romance. Did not like the histrionics of the scheming relatives in Love Like the Galaxy, the immaturity of Zhao Lusi's character and felt it took too long to meet Wu Lei's character. With The Double, we see Xiao Heng's first encounter with Xue Fengfei early on. Even though they're only seeing each other from afar and hear or have heard the gossip about each other, it makes a lasting impression. For him it's re-enforced as he watches her funeral procession and then they meet again in the mountains. Also loved the evocative intro and outro both of which bookended each episode beautifully. Agree that a second season would have been nice. Felt Situ Jiu Yue/the poison princess should end up with Ye Shijie! And do Xue Fengfei's father and brother return to their hometown to govern again? However, in comparison to The Princess Royal, this was a more spare production with less budget? which they used to perfect effect! Was stunned to find out how young Wang Xing Yue is. He's one of those young actors who presents as much older/mature. In Korea Lee Jae Wook is like that too. That makes them viable leads for actresses older than they are. Don't forget Amidst a Snowstorm of Love which is where I first saw Wang Xing Yue as the very memorable 2nd ML. Really enjoying The Princess Royal including the evocative intro and outro. Hoping for a happy ending this time around. ; )

I agree this drama Double is very dramatic composed of love , hate, revange, devil, heroes, big families intrict in political situation...but the DUKE is awesome, cool, brave, sometimes intimidating but full of respect and love to the strkng and intelegent, beautiful woman Ali...the way he expressed his feeling also 👍👍. The missing part is how the Duke feelings when he lost his two very good bodyguards who always besides him and who he trust them with his hart. It must be very hard and very sad for the Duke.....😢😢😢

Great drama, but Chinese dramaland needs urgently an ending writer😂. I've been watching The Last Cook with Double, and the story is so well written, nostalgic review about disappearing of one era, despite of all flaws like bad cinematography, 4 years since it was filmed, sometimes annoying FL, I was in love with ML principal, protectiv, trying to be romantic, old school man always silently being FL shadow. So emotional, human, without big bangs, love it 🤩one of my favourite this year.

Thanks so much for your review! Excellent synopsis! ***SPOILERS*** I just watched this and was dissatisfied with the ending. I had to Google reviews and summaries because the ending left me wanting. It was depressing to see the 2 heroes/body guards (brothers) die and enemy soldiers closing in on Duke Su, with no reinforcements. On Netflix, the ending was the ambiguous one, where FL was at their tree, the blossoms falling and swirling off the tree, and Duke Su magically rides across the steppe (?), but we don't see him reach her. The last scenes were so beautiful, with FL's red garments blowing in the wind, against the green of the landscape and sky. The last scenes of Duke Su on the battlefield were breathtaking and heart breaking. I can't put into words how great that scene was of Duke Su, placing the token in hos mouth (so sexy too, and I'm way older than 33!) I don't know how the book ends, and didn't know there was an alternate, "happier" ending. It sucks they would change it due to "uncoupling" desires of the audience, or because the audience demands a happier ending. Maybe the need to believe actors or celebrities are single isn't such a big deal in the US? The ambiguous ending seems more realistic and the FL is likely imagining Duke Su returning alive. We don't see him reach her, or an embrace between them. There are blossoms swirling in the wind, like when she sees the ghost of Jiang Li. We have already seen that he disappears when she imagines him combing her hair. She tells her "father" she will wear her hair down with a ribbon, of Duke Su doesn't come home. All these hints suggest Duke Su is dead. If they wanted a happy ending, wouldn't the series end after they were married? Why put us through a brutal battle scene, and have only Duke Su survive, despite no reinforcements? I agree the chemistry between ML and FL was *off*. I did notice the age difference. I didn't know it was as big as stated above. I agree the makeup looked terrible. I realized Duke Su seemed young in a scene where his shirt was off. All the actors of this ensemble were great. Again, I didn't think the ML and FL had great chemistry. They acted well together and I appreciated how they worked together and their relationship grew, as characters. Their kiss was anticlimactic (40 episodes and not one kiss between them???) and passionless. Wang Xing Yue was so great to watch! His acting was superb! I think this was too much of a slow burn and I mostly waited for ML to show up and enjoyed the scenes with the body guards and the Spicy Princess. I was happy to be able to watch a new Chinese drama on Netflix. I have watched a few on Prime, maybe Hulu too. This movie makes me think of another movie, Blood Romance. I was really drawn into The Double's plot, storyline and CP despite the age difference. For me the Princess' actions were non-redeemable. Same goes for her toyboy.. The ending was realistic and I did not need the five minute happy stuff. Am fully ensconced in The Princess Royale now because I love the ML and the princess has smartened up second time around

Crying with tears in a drama is no big deal 😢 other actors use eye drop to take the crying scene. Eye drop is often use in western drama to enduce tears in an emotional scenes.

How do you know how good a show is regardless of which country it comes from ? it's how fast Netflix puts it on the screen. I was hooked within the first five minutes it was a phenomenal show. So many got hung up on the age gap and I could not see what the problem was. I'm older than my husband it is just a number not a designation. I have loved Wu Jinyan since Yanxi palace but she has been given some real bad reviews on some of her shows like Royal Feast which was phenomenal there wad not one bad scene in it everyone who is in that show acted their socks of. It was also a true showing of the times and just how bad women and men had it in the palace and the change that had to come. The double is my choice for the drama of the year. Wu Jinyan was acting two parts the betrayed wife and the betrayed daughter just the shear amount of work to do is awesome. The Duke was the perfect leading man. The ex was evil and watching them all fall was lovely. The Duke's two side kicks I loved. I have watched it 3 times already

It's worth watching only because of Wang Xing Yue. He carries the whole drama on his shoulders, talent, and good acting! Also worth mentioning the good acting of Chen Chiau En, Taiwanese actress whom I like very much and watched a lot of dramas with her, some of them several times!. Unfortunately the FL, Wu Jin Yan, is absolutely no match to Wang Xing Yue. She is 33 y.o. but with her plastic surgery (which twisted her face- her right side with a big bump is bigger than the left) she looks 50!!! They shoot her through the filter but it doesn't help. In some scenes she is absolutely ugly and all young actresses next to her look like angels.Wang Xing Yue, 22 y.o. is like a baby next to her! The FL should be younger and match the ML's age! In spite of this he pinned his role in this drama. Good Job!!!
