Well in a sense this is actually legitimately correct. Numchucks, flails, whips, and other such weapons are shit. The only weapons that are legitimately good are sticks. Think about it, spears, axes, and war picks are sticks with sharp pieces of metal attached. Swords are very thin, sharp, metal sticks. Maces, war hammers, and mauls are sticks with blunt, weighted, metal heads on the end. Pole arms are effectively a mixture of spears, axes, war picks and/or war hammers. Even bows and crossbows use the flexibility and tensile strength of sticks to launch other aerodynamic sticks with sharp pieces of metal on the end. Hell even GUNS are hollow metal sticks that contain miniture explosions in order to launch aerodynamic pieces of copper and lead very accurately at super sonic speeds. All good weapons are solid sticks.

As a side note, the double bit wood axe is often sharpened differently on each head to create a fine edge and a more wedge shaped edge. The fine edge would be used for felling and bucking, while the stouter edge would be used on knotty sections and for delimbing. If all the tools have to be carried to the job, one less handle and some of an axe head can make a difference. It is also a real advantage if the tree and stump have to both be removed because chopping in the dirt with a fine edged cutting axe is a great way to chip it.
@oscarsilver3773
@oscarsilver3773 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. One side was more of a blunt sledgehammer and the other was more for a sharp slicing. The extra weight would deal more damage from follow through and shouldn't be used if they were too heavy for you 😜 that's why short handled double blades would be nice for the average person, while the longer ones were more for the Hulk-sized ppl. 👀 I mean, who swings a sledgehammer around all day? One side through the front door, and the other to chop off someone's head? 😱

I like the idea of a double headed axe where the back end is more of a blunt tool, like a long, narrow, curved hammer head. There are definitely times where you might need both a blunt and a sharp instrument on a Medieval battlefield, and it's basically coming at the issue from the opposite direction of the warhammer, instead of a blunt weapon with sharp bits added on, a sharp weapon with blunt bits added on.
@MrBottlecapBill
@MrBottlecapBill 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I've found quite a few of them metal detecting, of various ages. Most of them seem to have this type of blade configuration although not all of them do. I suspect the ones that don't are modern made versions and the makers just didn't understand the true point of two edges.

I don't think so, Dwarves use their axes as tools and weapons.. they might literally only use one side for War and the other for Work. With that very understanding that some Wood Axes have a sharper chopping edge with the other being in a general wedge shape for bucking off limbs. I'm certain Dwarven axes are used to cut and chop off mugs of ore from veins.. Thus a Dwarven Axe is purely functional in design.

The other guys in the industry who die really often are the chain pullers. So Lumberjack cuts down the tree then the chain puller hooks up the chain and then the chain pulls the log back to the processing centre. When the tension first goes on the Chain sometimes snap sometimes they tense up right away and if you're in the path of the chain it can take yer arm or leg off. It's a rare thing that The Lumberjack actually dies because Lumberjacks are clear cutting trees normally they have tools and equipment that either keep them safe or they're cutting the trees and such a way they don't need to worry about things like widow-makers which arborist still need to concern themselves with.

I grew up using an axe as a child, trimming the branches on the trees that my father had felled, using a double bladed axe. I was 6-7 years old, and my father could take a limb off a tree 5-6" thick in a single stroke, and, damn, how I wanted to be that good! He explained to me that the single blade axe was for felling trees, where you worked the axe at 2 angles into the cut (he used a chain saw though!) and you changed the angle with a body-shift and a shift of your grip. When trimming a tree out, the blade had to hit the branch very close to the tree (so that shock wouldn't be absorbed by the springiness of the branch) and at a very precise angle. Cutting a branch off in one swipe isn't about brute strength, it's more akin to the trick of ripping a phone book in half. Anyways, this is what a double bladed axe is really for, it has a balance that a single blade does not have, and in skilled hands, you can be much more precise in your angle, cutting much deeper than you would have managed with your angle slightly off on the head of the axe. By the time I was 12-13, I was able to "walk the trunk" and swing that axe in an almost constant motion, swiping branches off the felled tree in single swipes, up to 4-5".

The reason's double headed axes have value: While barrel riding and you have to tap many goblins in rapid succession. Since all you have to do is tap a goblin with an axe to kill it (as we see in the historical films "The Hobbit") you don't need the extra power swing. Considering this, you could be very efficient in holding the axe straight out in front of you and just swiping left and right like you're using a metal detector and you'd be able to kill enemies by the trillions.

As someone who has felled trees with an axe before, the double bitted axe is really helpful for edge alignment on repeating horizontal strikes. The single bitted axe wants to twist in your hands during a horizontal swing because it's unbalanced. It's not a big deal, but it causes a lot of forearm fatigue after a lot of swings. The double bitted axe really makes the task a lot easier due to it being balanced.

this is unrelated to the theme but it does relate to the weapon: double-bladed axes have been used in Robot Wars and other such competitions. because then you can attack aggressively from both front and back. One of the biggest advantages of double bit wood axes is sectional density. A double bit axe can be made heavier without making the head wider. This helped greatly felling the old growth hardwoods that were common place in North America during the 1800s. It wasn't until chainsaws and the need to drive wedges that fellers started carrying single bit axes.
@robertholte2716
@robertholte2716 3 жыл бұрын
yes, most single blade wood axes are thicker at the back to give added weight to the axe. A double bladed axe is thinner through and has a similar weight. And also, as I said in another post, you have better balance and control over the blade, which can increase the depth of your cut.

Double bit axe is more aerodynamic. You can whip a double bit faster and with greater accuracy than you would with a single bit. And that factor along with the increased weight means deeper penetration. I don’t know how good it would be in battle, but the double bit axe is excellent for chopping wood. You don’t even need to set your pieces on a chopping block. You can chop wood where it lays. Which means less time spent working and less time bending your back.

In defense of Gimli and his kin: dwarves are much stronger and sturdier than men. They don't tire easily. I don't think weight would be much of an issue. You could make the handle heavier to counterbalance some of the weight - though I think a dwarf could actually prefer the extra weight towards the business end to make it hit as hard as possible. Even so, we can see Gimli's battle axe has holes in it, probably to make it lighter. Speed and agility becomes less of an issue if you have an armour you can rely on and dwarves have the best armour around. Besides, a stocky dwarf will never be as agile as his human opponent anyway. As far as utility of the second bit is concerned; whether fighting the more populous men, orcs or goblins, a dwarf tends to be outnumbered. When fighting multiple enemies, the second bit becomes especially useful when swinging from side to side. Alternatively, a dwarf can keep one side razor sharp for slicing and dicing, while having the other intentionally duller for splitting bones and denting armour. Finally, during long journeys or intense battles, it also makes for a good backup in case one side gets damaged.
@kaseybennett7415
@kaseybennett7415 3 жыл бұрын
This does actually make a decent amount of sense, the only issue I find then is that the dwarves would still probably be better off with spikes and picks, but this is at least not unimaginable

Yes and no. Yeah, they are generally stronger than the average human, but the weight is distributed in another way, they're much much shorter, and that's a factor you gotta keep in mind. Also, practicing some holes through your axe's head? Yeah, you might as well go and intentionally break it... We never see holes in historical axes, and there's a reason for that. Oh and also, if that can carry heavier weapons they could just make larger heads, that way they would be sturdier and less likely to get damaged.

I think the only real benefit to having a second head on a battleaxe would actually be the added weight. And yes, that's also a detriment, but if you're trying to land devastating blows (especially with a blunted axe head!), more weight means more power, which will lead to a lot more damage. That being said, if that's the reason you want more weight in an axe head and you're willing and able to handle a heavier axe, just... put a hammer head on the other side... Something akin to the Venetian poleaxe. That way you have the extra weight to deliver a devastating blow, AND you have the option of making using a hammer head or an axe head

He said they did not exist in Medieval pictorial records of in more than a handful of cases, in which case they should be written of as artistic embellishment. A Cretan coat-of-arms is not European, and probably before say the 6th century. Moreover, Shad did not deny the existence of decorative double edged axes, showing a picture of such at the start. In which category a coat of arms most definitively falls. I’m curious about those Persian axes. My guess is they were ceremonial, but it’s entirely possible cultures that did not utilize the axe as often did not optimize it’s form. About the weight of two-headed axe: pollaxes have axe head one one side, and I think equally heavy hammer head on the other side - so the weight itself is not the deciding factor. The fact that you don't get much from this added weight is. Also, if I remember correctly Gimli axe was stupidly thick.

With the concept of the big sword in your book in mind, I could see a justification for a doublesided axe in a similar "enchantment-driven-gear" fantasy setting Where you would make the axe from something that didn't add too much extra weight, and each of the two sides would be enchanted with different enchantments (assuming enchantments can't be stacked for example) Or in a sort of setting where 2 different materials are needed for different targets (The Witcher for example, where Geralt has 2 swords because of that), having one side be made from each type of material could be usefull for the sake of only needing 1 weapon

Anyways, I didnt invent anything new and I couldn't make a not-stupid double edged axe, but it got me thinking why lightsabers weren't way longer. Like the light(saber) part of the lightsaber (not the handle) - why it wasn't like 1000 long and then u could just sweep back and forth to destroy everything rly quickly. I would put three jedi with longsabers on top of a destroyer. One would focus on deflecting all the enemy destroyer lasercannons, another would wave around and kill all the TIE fighters, and the third jedi would focus on touching the enemy destroyer shield generators, officer bay, engines, or whatever would K.O. the fastest.

The double battle axe, known in ancient Greece as the "pelekys" or "lambrys", evolved from double bitted axes originally used for felling lumber, one of its earliest mentions and depictions are found in Homer's Oddysey where Oddyseus strings his bow and shoots an arrow through the chain ring at the end of the handles of several double battle axes set on the ground to prove that he is indeed the king of the Ionian isle of Ithaca in disguise to the suitors pursuing his wife Penelope and then slaughtering them, and on ancient greek urns depicting the Athenian hero Theseus slaying the Minotaur in the Labyrinth under King Minos's palace in minoan Crete. Several minoan urns also depict priestesses of the goddess of fertility Demetre using heavy ornamental battle axes cast in gold for ceremonial purposes, and said ceremonial double axes are indeed found in archaeological excavations and now kept in museums across Greece. By today's standards it may seem unwieldy and redundant, because in high fantasy like D&D most human/humanoid enemies are armored in heavy iron/steel plate armor, BUT in real life occurences where the double battle axe is used, like in ancient Greece, ancient Egypt, ancient Mesopotamia, ancient Sumeria, ancient Persia, ancient Phoenicia etc. the double axe saw much use in combat as in early Bronze Age/early Iron Age humans usually fought bare chested OR wore light chest armor made of boiled leather, bronze/iron chest plates like we see in hoplite armor and large heavy shields evolving much later.

even with this: how prevelent were they in the battlefield? I know from a lot of ceremonial uses, I know of relatively little real battle uses. Was it what the "normal" soldier would swing? I think not. But at the same time I'm not an expert on that time frame so... With bronze you might have a higher benefit for double edged axes from the simple fact that it dulls faster than steel though (even though you can harden bronze to a degree and it's not as soft as some might think). So what Shad said, that having a second blade in case the other one gets dull might not be as important on steel axes as on bronze or copper.

I can actually see how a double edge could benefit a bronze axe in that bronze is at a much higher risk of [edit]critical failure[/edit] than steel, so you might be reasonably likely to benefit from having a backup head. Still, it's a pretty daft design at higher levels of technology.

There have been double-headed symmetrical axes that were used in warfare, there are plenty of examples of Tabar axes with two small blades, usually with a spike on top. They were used by cavalry, and while some were ceremonial, others had scuffs and nicks indicating they were actually used regularly. Mostly made by the Marathas, although there are some Persian and Ottoman examples as well. Plenty of other example substitute the other head for a war pick or simply a weight, so the way they wielded it might have relied on the head being balanced on the other side.

Very interesting, thanks for the information. It seems to me that the evolution of double bitted (or bladed) axes always led to axes similar to the most common halberds. That being an axe blade with a bill and a spear point. I think this combination offers the most utility for the weight it adds to the axe, while also providing the same benefits a double bitted axe provides, such as balance and extra weight in the head for more “oomph.”

I know this is an older video, but I wonder about a Witcher-type character using a double bladed axe with one edge steel and the other edge silver. Not as nimble as a sword, but lets you have both options on you without switching weapons, and would help if there are any creatures that must be decapitated to completely stop them. Now, I do realize that Geralt (and presumably other witchers, I haven't actually read the stories/books) don't always carry both swords as in the games, and the same vein of logic could be used to suggest a sword with one steel edge and one silver edge, but I think I could buy the argument of a monster slayer who needs both steel and silver weapons using a double bladed axe without it suspending disbelief too much (especially if decapitation/dismemberment were important).

I used to be a Dungeon Master. None of the players in my games ever chose a double bladed axe as a weapon. Mages had daggers for backup weapons. Thieves had short swords and daggers. Clerics had maces, and fighters used long swords and daggers for short range, or bows for long range combat against opponents with no armor. Note the lack of throwing knives or other thrown weapons. The last thing you want in a fight is for your enemy to pick up the weapon you just threw at them, and have them throw it back in your face, or worse, wield it against you in their fist. As for armor, Mages wore none. Thieves used hardened leather, Clerics could use chain, or plate armor, fighters used hardened leather, chain, or plate armor, depending on what their finances were like. If course, no armor was always an option for all classes when just starting out. Side note: Mages could wear armor but took a penalty on their spells if they did. Dual class mage/fighters could get that penalty negated depending on their training. As a for instance, a battle mage, trained in both magic and sword fighting could wear light armor with no penalty. These were general guidelines, and there were exceptions to those rules, though I was the one with the final call. If the player made their case, I would allow it, but that was rare. On another note, one player got their character elevated to NPC godhood. Not an easy task, and not something you really want to do. I had that happen to a character I played in another related game, and I didn't like it. In my case, it was because I knew too much and the people I was gaming with knew nothing. I showed them just exactly what a level 1 character could really do, but they did not know that as they had never played before. Anyhow, enough about game play. I agree with Shad, double bladed axes are a waste of mass and energy. When it comes to double bladed axes, you're better off with a hatchet. The mass of a double axe would be better used in carrying extra loot, as a for instance. I agree, weight in a game is generally unrealistic, but even at that, there are limits, and those limits are there for a reason. @ 5:44 my players were big fans of portable holes, a-la the road runner. They could put the hole on the ground, store their stuff in it, and have it available when they got to town. This was not available to them until they got to level 15 or more. Most times they had to make it rather than find it. A portable hole required lots of spider silk, and you had to enchant it before weaving it, which required a lot of gold. Even so, it was worth it to them. If you play Minecraft, the equivalent would be an ender chest. @ 9:44 I have a hatchet. There was on time my room mate needed to chop through a tree branch. I handed him the hatchet, and he did not know how to use it. He chopped in the branch for about 3 minutes and got no where. I took it from him and in about 1 minute chopped the branch through. In the process, I showed him how to properly use the tool. It is a workout, and I don't recommend doing it on a hot day unless you have a hose to wet yourself with, and lot's of water to drink.

I think a double headed axe is meant to be used effectively like this: When you face an opponent in combat, you give them the double headed axe while you yourself use a single headed with a spike at the back..... or a sword.

Solution: Make the shaft of the double sided axe short enough for only one hand. Then dual wield two of these kind of axes, do a few lines of crack or whatever drugs berserkers did, and just go crazy and go stupid.

I have an idea of how to use the second head well: Take it off, put it on a wooden shaft, give the second axe to someone else and have that person help you in combat. Now THAT'S a benefit.

You beat me to it. Being able to arm a second person is far more beneficial than having a second head. Whether it be another axe or some other weapon that's quite a bit of wasted steel for basically just looking cool.

I think this is one of those weird cases where they're a bad idea in real life, but make perfect sense to include in a fantasy work. Think about who usually uses them: Dwarves and Barbarians. Two groups whose specialties tend to be strength and endurance. If you CAN swing around the heavier axe all day without exhausting yourself, then the extra momentum per swing would itself be enough of an advantage to justify the extra weight, even if you never used the other side. Now, would a second bit be any better than just making a single bit larger? That I'm not sure about one way or the other.

Even in a fantasy setting, having a hammer as the other head instead of second axe head would be better. One side to smash, one side to split 👍

@@TheKe3lz Yeah, the main issue seems to be that a double headed axe is just an inefficient halberd.
@HawaiianForgeStudios
@HawaiianForgeStudios 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheKe3lz It depends, in a fantasy setting like OP stated, strength and endurance are key and you wouldnt really need to crush anything because of the fact that users of the battle axe or double headed axe are so strong that theyll just chop and crush through whatever resistance is in their way through brute strength. Warhammers are great for just crush crush stomp stomp but Axes have the crush and chopping power that push them over the edge ever so slightly. I like both however.

The one advantage that I can think of for the 2nd head would be that you have a backup if your blade dulls or breaks mid-combat. Sure, you can just keep on using it as a hammer at that point, but if you want that cutting ability back you just spin it around and you've got a freshly sharpened war axe.

One of my dnd settings has one good example of a practical double bitted combat axe and its inworld name is "the all purpose military axe" one side is thicker for felling trees and splitting wood and the other side is just your standard battleaxe blade, and its essentially that worlds equivalent of the united states millitarys e-tool Edit: forgot to mention the foot scout variation that includes a flat shovel head with a sharpened edge on just the point affectionately dubbed "the micro halberd" given to them as a brush clearing tool and emergency melee weapon for when their bows arent useful
