If anyone has marched tenors in a marching band. This technique is very similar. Love it when I can take my marching chops and put it to a kit.

Cobus is a good drummer and he has marketed his videos correctly on you tube and in a very smart way. He did songs that were popular so he could get his name out there and he did a fantastic job with the quality and sound in each video. His drumming is very fun and enjoyable to watch. Yeah, he isn't the best drummer in the world and their are better drummers, but give the guy credit for getting so many fans and becoming a successful musician. He has great technique and deserves respect.

@LukesDrumsOnline True Dat. I still get goosebumps every time I hear him play. Many came after him with a broader canvas to paint on, Mitch, John B etc. but none had the ability to create the sheer excitement he generated everytime he sat at the kit.

Cobus is awesome! This trick is really awesome for solos, just imagine the crowd when a drummer pulls this off. I know, it might not be the best ever, but it looks really cool, and that's basically what solos are about.

It's just 2x RRKK RRKK RRKK RRKK so it makes 32 notes in total (R=right hand, K=kick). And u can apply those Rs anywhere on the set u like :) the precise fill he plays goes like 2x tSKK STKK tSKK sTKK (t=small tom, T=low tom, S=snare, K= kick).

i see exactly what your saying, and i agree, to a certain extent. a huge and overlooked part of drumming is creativity. there is always going to be someone thats better and faster than you, and just all around more technically sound. thats where creativity comes into play. i believe the point of drumming is to make the music youre playing to sound better. just because you can play super crisp and fast rudiments doesnt make you a good drummer. cobus is a creative drummer, and therfore a good one.

No disrespect to young Cobus, but the "sweep", known as the "Baltimore sweep", is a technique that was pioneered and mastered many years ago by Dennis Chambers. Dennis Chambers can play any syncopation with the free hand against the sweep while adding a variety of ostinatos with the left foot. And of course his musical maturity enables him to create very musical extended phrases in the process. Dennis Chambers is a true virtuoso. For some of you that may not be familiar, check him out!

@GhassanElachkar valid question. some (not all) beaters have multiple surfaces, usually a felt on one side and then hard plastic on the other. some drummers prefer the hard plastic side for certain styles or sounds. when recording, the hard plastic side may be selected to enhance the "punch" of the bass. other reasons might be to match the feeling of playing with stick, as a maple wood stick is probably more akin to the plastic as far as timbre and feeling of response. hope this helps

Like he said, it leaves your left hand open to do other things on the kit; he also said that it even sounds cleaner with both hands. Try throwing in some accents on the upbeat with your left hand on the hi-hats, opening them on the hit. That way, you'll be incorporating every body part, and nothing is "wasted," so to speak.

if you mean when he leaves it on the bass drum when not in use, it benefits by not getting cramp in you feet, and so your leg doesn't get tired from hovering your foot over the pedal, to be honest it may be a lazy trick but it benefits me lots! :)

This is a signature Dennis Chambers lick too by the way. He demonstrated it in his 1990 instructional video "In The Pocket". Might be worth mentioning where you borrow ideas and licks from.and give proper credit to the person who invented it. Dennis even called it a "sweep" in his video.

i think that these technique are similar but no the same. i will try to explain it simple, chambers applies it to the floor tom(tom, snare, etc) and then he uses his foot for another double stroke. Here cobus applies it to the tom and the snare and then he uses his foot for another double stroke. i mean, with his hand he hit two parts of the drum while chambers just use one.
@tobleroni
@tobleroni 10 жыл бұрын
It's the same technique and if you've ever seen Dennis perform this he moves it all around the kit as well.
@tobleroni
@tobleroni 10 жыл бұрын
The difference is that when Dennis demonstrates techniques that he saw other drummers do such as bass drum stutters he credits the originators like Tiki Fullwood of Funkadelic or James "Diamond Williams of the Ohio Players.

Sry but it is not the same, he can move all around the kit, of course, but he doesnt hit two parts in the same double stroke. Pay attention at minute 4. I think you are just hatting on cobus.

Well, say what you want, Cobus is an extremely talented drummer. Applying this and other techniques is awesome for my drumming. And I'd rather learn it from a guy who isn't a prick about drumming. And who actually wants you to pick it up and not just "hey look at me I am so cool and better than anyone" . Referring to the guy who typed "gaaaaaay". I purchased the Cobus Method via Drumeo and man, there is no way I would have just come up with so many tricks so quickly just jammin in my studio. I have been playing for thirty years and when you think you know it all, thats when you quit learning. And in finality, that really sucks for your drumming and asinine attitude. To continue making forward progress, how can you be so closed and negative minded? YOU will never be as good as you CAN be.

The beat is just to show what tempo it's in, and so people (beginners) can understand where it starts and where it finishes. It's not something you'd actually USE in a song, it's just something that is cool to learn how to do because you can apply the principle in other ways in your own beats. You would't play it just like this as a fill in a song.

@MonsieurRager With the slide you start with your first stroke on the back of the foot board and then move your foot forward to get another stoke in on the top of the board, kind of hard to explain in writing but it should turn into a fluid motion. Really good for doubles and once you get good you can even go up to three stokes in a single slide, hope that helped :)
