Guy number two from story number three. I’m in a SFTP hoody outside that Marylebone Tesco and hear ‘nice sweatshirt mate’ behind me. Turn around and it’s Chris Martin from actual Coldplay. The dude puts his phone back to his ear and continues down the high street in his Back to The Future Nike high tops. Olly is the real deal - new EP rips.

I don’t think people truly understood how different Monuments was going to be when Olly left. He has enough solo material now that anyone can go back and hear his contributions to Monuments are unbelievable. Absolute riffmaster.

Met Olly when he was filling in for Volumes a few years ago. I stopped him to tell him how incredible his work on A.W.O.L was, he told me how much everyone hated it at the time, but he took a picture and chatted for a while. He’s a sick dude. I’m just glad I could tell him how much his work means to me. He’s an incredible musician and song writer.

The lyrics sucked a bit, but A.W.O.L was 100% the best song on Phronesis. Olly is absolutely cracked, and like some other people said, now that he's not in Monuments, I can hear where his influence was in the pre-In-Stasis music. I miss that shit.

The outro of Sirens is literally the best moment of the album. So happy he didn't delete it. One of my most played songs this year.

Thank you for being willing to get into the Red Tape/Under The Hood stuff about spilts, what levels and stages there are + what things can go wrong with the artwork, the industry, and so on! 🤝 Learning about Red Tape that NO ONE else talks about is a HUGE part of why this podcast is great and why I seek it out (and I’m not even a musician; although, my work is in the creative field). Craig wasn’t trying to crack you open or shame you: it’s about putting it on the floor if something close to it comes up, and respecting your autonomy and agency to speak on it as little or as much as you wish. This channel empowers people with a lot of knowledge. Craig isn’t trying to get to the next bullet point on a list; he expands and contracts with emotional intelligence and nuance. And, he will crack open the world of technicalities for us in a way (and to a degree) that -literally- no one else does. So thank you for being willing dude! Also, I’ve got your EP cued up. It’s second in my, “to do,” list after Molchat Doma’s new single (I’m HUGE into Goth Rock and Post Punk). Thus far I played, “Intro,” to wet my pallet, and I’m LOCKED in with that 👏 🫶

I was in Cyclamen with Olly back then and remember that gig at Satan's and the shit on the towel incident. I'm also pretty sure me and Hayato had to sleep in a child's size racing car bed. Not an experience you'd want to repeat but definitely memorable even all these years later.

Craig, serious question if you have a moment (and I think it’s a decent one) though I’m ignorant of this, so I’m happy to be educated, and I’ll keep this to a 45 second read. I’ll cite context first: on the front of incorporation? You were in a DEATH METAL BAND?? And yeah, you answered that the speed of the kicks has left you, but hearing you talk about jazz fusion, knowing what you taught, watching what you can do over a pop song? Not knowing music theory, but listening for what patterns that I can as a SUPER eclectic music lover (happy to learn in this episode you and I both adore Trent’s scoring work + NIN ambient work)? Stray (I’m fairly sure) has Nü-Metalcore, rap rock, rap metal, Metalcore (in its own right, structurally), Nü-Metal (in its own right), hardcore, and so on, all incorporated into it. There’s a RADICAL difference I hear between Subliminal Criminals and Euthanasia (despite the prior harbors my #1 Stray song). Those are my two favorite albums (I got on during, “Anonymous),” although Euthanasia is the better record. And, I think about how critical jazz was to Sabbath’s drumming. All the time you say, “I’m a drummer in a Hardcore band,” but I hear WAY more than that going on. In any case, why not attempt to incorporate more of what you can FULLY do into Stray? Perhaps you already do, but I don’t know how to look for it (thus I’m way off base and I apologize).. or.. are we about to taste some of that on the new album (since you specified, “this new album is how I want to be remembered)?”
@reynlord6665 ай бұрын
haha there’s a reason anonymous and euthanasia sound so different, i put everything I’ve got into writing stray stuff
