Alyssa vs Jade and the "backrolls?!" argument, Willam vs Phi Phi, Everyone vs Mimi and Serena. RuPaul's Drag Race untucked has given us some iconic moments.
Throughout the years, what was once an explosive, crazy viewing experience has turned into a dull, meaningless 20 minutes. Untucked has been a staple of the Drag Race series since Season 2, but as time has gone on, it has become less and less important to the show. "You're only getting half the story" isn't the case any longer.
Today, we'll look at the biggest differences in Untucked and maybe why its success has waned throughout the years. We'll ask if it's even worth having on anymore and if it should be replaced.
Let me know what you think in the comments below!

The #1 issue for me is when the guest judges always visit in the middle of the drama just to say the same things every time and disrupt the fun chemistry and banter between the queens.
@cinnamonroll96
@cinnamonroll96 3 ай бұрын
I think that’s annoying too. it’s clear they want to interrupt before things get too heated or resolved to quickly. So they chime in and drama is hopefully continued next untucked or whatever.

I just made this comment somewhere else here. It really is so forced. They’re all like, oh we heard the red states are coming for the drag queens so we’re suddenly all so inspired by the bravery of what you do” and it’s bizarre. Like these queens lip sync and pop their pussies for dollar bills (more power to them) and guest judges act like they’re saints.

@@user-xr5kp6qz8gThat is catty, this isn’t rupauls best friend race. Fans have forgotten this is a competition, they should be playing mind games if they want to. Drag Queens aren’t “nice” we’re treating them all like role models when they’re there to make good tv and compete. If they come there and want to be a saint and be that role model that should be their choice. As long as outside of TV they’re being professional it doesn’t matter. It’s tv, it is fake! international seasons usually just lump untucked into the episode before the judges make their decisions. it works 100x better because they usually just condense whatever drama or fights into like the 5 or 10 minutes before the winner and bottoms are called. keeps the drama on screen, you don’t have to watch another show, it flows super well and you don’t have to sit through celebrities telling queens to “be who they are” or the eliminated queen packing their stuff.

I know Trixie Mattel made a video on her channel talking about the production at drag race… but she said that editors will edit to point out who’s in the bottom and who’s in the top, but while the queens are there they really can’t tell what’s gonna happen since they don’t see the big picture. They don’t realize until after they get their critiques when they do figure out who’s likely going home.

They're saying us as the audience don't want to hear them ponder over who is in the bottom /eliminated when we just watched the show before untucked so we already know who's leaving. Mama, kudos for saying that. For spilling. In all seriousness, you definitely aired so many of my frustrations with the current Untucked format. The guest judges visiting back stage in particular is something that I can't stand pretty much every time now, regardless of if it's interrupting a fight or not. It's just unnecessary. One thing I do like in current Untucked (which I think is a holdover from old Untucked but I forgot) is the eliminated queens packing up and reflecting on their time at Drag Race. It's always nice to give the queen one final send-off before they go home.

Even queens like Dawn and Mhi'ya who are less confrontational are called "bullies" and "bad people" by these ridiculous fans. They care more than the queens do about the drama and they make the social media scene exhausting. People were commenting on Dawn's comment sections that she was a bad person and going to hell, all because she was shady and the advice she gave Plasma didn't help her. It's insane.

I have been saying this for years. The 12 year old little girls and wet-behind- ears Twinks seem to think that Drag Race is a Fashion Show. Most of them have NEVER been to a show or don't even know their local Queens, because they are too young to go to a bar. I wish Drag Race never became mainstream.

literally my only issue with this season of untucked is that every judge is being made to go in and try and have a lady gaga moment and it just breaks up the flow. untucked is about the queens having time to themselves, "backstage" in their own space. So many interesting moments this season of untucked have been interrupted by the guest judges being made to walk in and have the most uninspired interactions with the queens...

I think the difference is that production used to separate the type of reality show they were doing back then between Untucked and Drag Race. Drag Race was a competition reality show like Project Runway or American Idol, and Untucked was more like Big Brother were production expected the queens to do drama, fight and/or interact with each other. Now Untucked is an extention of Drag Race, it's a sort of recap to what we just watched on the episode, product placement for House Of Love Cocktails ™️, have the guest judge show up "unexpectedly" and if there's time fight. It looks and feels scripted and produced, it's not flowing naturally anymore. Also, the fans don't want a villain because they are the villains. They think that the way to show support to their favorite is to destroy another queen.

im just soo curious from a production standpoint why they keep bringing the guest judges backstage - the queens don’t like it and have to fake being excited, clearly the guest judges are forced to do it and the audience HATES it - and surely it means they have to pay the celebs more for their contribution? Untucked now is: Safe queens discussing tops and bottoms Tops and bottoms enter, tops get their applause and bottoms get a chance to vent. Celebrity enters and performative chat happens which includes: -Praising the drag queens for being drag queens (bravery, drag is art, etc.) -I love drag and/or drag race -gay rights -advice for the queens, solicited or not Bottom queens learning lyrics and get pep talks from their friends. Eliminated queen reads notes from friends, packs and leaves. And yeah, back in the day the alcohol was flowing. But the biggest change is that the audience feels entitled to destroy queens on social media they don't like for whatever reason. So yes, queens have been more aware of what and how they say things. Editing themselves to death to avoid being on the receiving end of the hate. What people need to do is accept that this is a TV show. Whatever these people say and or do to each other is between them and no one else. Just because it's on TV doesn't give us license to insert ourselves. If a queen does something to a queen you like instead of attacking, how about go show some love to the queen you like instead?

The downfall can be broken down into three simple things: 1) the queens don’t have separate rooms anymore to talk shit in 2) the guest judges coming backstage removed any and all drama and seems to always happen during the juiciest moments 3) video messages from home also remove drama 100% of the time Honorary mention to so much screen time dedicated to the eliminated queen packing up.

tl;dr - blame it on the audience, their hyperfixations and chronic unemployment.

Thats super oversimplified, tv culture has also changed so has knowledge and awareness of mental health, i dont think many queens want to make a big scene on national tv knowing the impact it will have on their future mental health. Also stop being classist to unemployed people.

Good morning, Stanloona. As soon as the clocks go back and the nights start drawing in, I feel it too. At least here the nights are getting lighter, trees are budding and the spring flowers are out. Hope you're doing OK. Sending you positive thoughts from the Welsh border, hope you have a good day from an Internet stranger.

It was very entertaining in the beginning, it's just they cut that Amanda vs. Plane storyline wayyyy too short with no real payoff either since we didn't even get a lip sync between the two. They could have easily carried that dynamic for way longer than they did. It's one of my biggest issues with this season is that major storyline getting cut just as it was getting good.

As a person who didn't watch untucked (I thought it was a silly show that showed the queens hanging out, basically what it is today) while I marathoned all the seasons, I really missed a lot of the story. I watched some of untucked after I finished season 11 and a lot started making sense to me, it definitely felt like I missed something, by not watching it. Today its just a side show if you wanna see the queens being friendly.

I think what you said is pretty accurate, but if nothing is working for the editors so they just have to put on crazy dramatic sound effects, and show a lot of untucked exclusives. looking back now in the old s2-6 untucked, the editors back then did a painstaking work!

People are so annoying that they don’t know how to feel these days. On one hand, you would think everybody is all open-minded, modern and “free“, and “live and let live” and blah blah blah. And yet the more entrenched into society the media and entertainment becomes, it seems like people struggle even MORE to separate it from reality, which is weird to me. The reason why older seasons of shows, Untucked included, could “get away” with stuff (which, let’s be honest, was never really that serious) was because people knew it was entertainment. They’re not dumb; even if some of the drama was real it wasn’t concerning the viewers-clearly it was drama between the people on TV… Like Shangela and Mimi. Who’s gonna get offended by that, that’s between them. People are so dumb. Also - if being “nice” and respectful is the case, why are the same ppl offended by every little thing, yet they turn around and do something seriously hurtful and offensive to someone close to them?! Or even worse-to someone who BELIEVES they’re closer than they (apparently) are. It’s like, people get offended but then they do what they want anyway, and say what they want all the time… and we’re just supposed to deal with it? Out of respect for them? Btw I’m talking about in real life, real relationships and encounters, not necessarily celebrities.

I also really like the season like canada and uk, where they are integrating untucked into the episode. They just cut in the funny and important parts and that’s it. I think that this way they can decide if something worth mentionable happened. And they can put Whatcha packing or Hey Queen after Drag Race

Make the pitstop host a regular judge and have the guest watch the filming of that episode so that after every elimination they'll film the episode to have more personal opinion on the show

Part of the reason my husband and I love España and some of the non-English seasons is that in other countries we tend to be more raw about the way we interact. So we get a much less sanitized version of the show that is closer to what it used to be. The US gives great seasons, but we already know the real drama is gone forever.

Hi Derek I hope you see this. I want you to know how much light you bring into my life with the content that you put out. You are very funny and entertaining and kind and there is something about listening to other gay people talk about drag race that fills my soul. You've been legit getting me through some horrible days at work. Not to sound parasocial but the podcasts and videos you put out bring me a sense of community which I'm like deprived of currently bc of circumstances. I really hope things get easier for you. I hope that you get to experience the joy that you bring to people's lives while making this content. Just wanted to let you know all this means a lot to me. Hope I'm not being too corny haha

Just a slight disagreement. Silver and gold rooms shouldnt ALWAYS be separated between safe and top/bttm. Add a little spice into the mix throwing queens around to make some odd pairs happen. A season like S16 would have queens separated almost always the same way and that would get boring real quick. Other than that, full agree.

There's a reason why the saying "If it aint broke dont fix it" exists Like i literally cannot understand why they changed it when it gave them so many iconic moments; i mean its not like it was on accident, it was clear they thought about it in detail, with splitting safe and critiqued girls, the safe girls having games and video-messages to pass time since there's gonna be less drama with them just being safe ect... Like unless it was a money thing i just cant understand it (tho i dunno how a full on studio would cost less than two small rooms 🧍🏻‍♀️)

It is a money thing. They're just in the werk room now, instead of a separate studio split into rooms with all the different furniture and fixtures.

So many other franchises just put the Untucked parts in the episode and I think we could just do that, and then maybe have like an aftershow or something...even like having pit stop as a show but making it higher budget and having the eliminated queen have a segment on it every week could be cool too

I think bc of the digitalization esp in the last few years, queens get a lot more hate directed towards them. I don’t think 2024 or today is the problem per se or that fans are necessarily different now. I think if social media back had been the same as it is now, queens at that time would have gotten the same amount. Bc i don’t think “fans” were less hateful back then but just had less “opportunities” to hate a queen or make it known to the queen that they are hated, if y’all understand what I mean? So I think the main problem in terms of fan reception / queens reactions to that, is that now queens know a lot more if they are hated! Only jaremi was found by fans left and right even at that time and with the full on villain edit, it didn’t help. Such a tragedy honestly that jaremi gets blasted in the season as a villain where the hero to that story full on is a villain. Even with willam, more than understandable that she was at her wits end with that girl.
