I genuinely think that they sabotaged the queens this week. I found myself laughing when there was that stupid "this sucks" sound effect that they used. RuPaul knows how to turn on the fake laugh and she deliberately chose not to. They wanted some lip sync smackdown from the beginning and saw the opportunity even though there was a clear bottom two in my opinion.

Completely agree. One of the reasons I strongly dislike UK Season 3's Snatch Game as a whole. Everyone was asked to change their characters when Ru spoke to them in the work room (except we didn't see footage of Krystal or Vanity), and the only girls that didn't change their characters ended up in the bottom.

Did you consider doing a "Laughs per minute" calculation to account for seasons with less time? Great video, but I'm wondering if the rankings would have been different. For ex: on season 6 they only got 20 laughs but it was 6 mins long (on youtube) vs season 14 which was 14 minutes long and got 25 laughs. If you divide the laughs for season 6 - 20/6 you get 3.3 laughs per minute. If you divide the laughs for season 14 - 25/14 you get 1.8 laughs per minute. This maybe shows why this felt like such a flop. we had a lot less laughs per minute we spent watching it! Thanks for compiling all the info and watching these all again for us!

Absolutely agree, and they even mention the problem with different video lenghts at the start of the video. I generally don't think that just counting Ru's laughs per game (or even per min) is the best heuristic. 1. As they said: sometimes Ru laughs AT the Queens and not with them. Laughter has a social context. 2. Sometimes she'll laugh genuinely as well even though the camera cuts to the guest judges. Excluding them doesn't seem right. Even if Ru didn't laugh then - seeing guest judges laugh makes it funnier for us viewers as well. I think a mere quantitative analysis will always fall short (and a qualitative approach would be suited better).

I’m sure producers were losing their shit over the possibility of that many bottom placements. It’s a stage with no audience so no background laughs, Ru is refusing to laugh I’m sure they put the pressure on them and made the atmosphere so dead none of them could make any jokes land past a certain point

Regardless, if it was judged as it should be or not, the placement of any Queen is fair and so is the elimination. They signed up for exposure and their careers to be taken to the next level not really to be America's next Drag Superstar. Only 8 minutes into this, I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure Ru laughs at Jaidynn’s intro. I really feel like this isn’t a great system to use cuz there’s like, courtesy laughing, nervous laughing, along with a bird sounding laugh (Ru’s reaction to “a sensible 74”) that is worth way more to me than a giggle to me (reaction to Karen’s “bout an 11”). I’d kinda like to know the counter for awkward silence/Ru going “okay…alright” to signal an unfunny joke, but I know it’s hard to quantify these things. Edit: Just checked, Ru doesn’t laugh at Jaidynn but he does shout “OH MY GOODNESS!” I’d give that a half a point but I’m generous

I think Snatch Game is seen as "good" not because there aren't any bad queens, but because there is a nice mix of REALLY good and REALLY bad queens. Season 14 may have apparently gotten more laughs, but none of them really stood out as especially good or even horrifyingly bad, just boring and bland, and even Deja has not much quotable, apart from the "Yeah".

I feel like the best snatch games find that happy medium between queens cosplaying other people while just acting like themselves vs acting like the celebrity and forgetting to make it funny. That’s why I think many people see Kylie’s Dolly as successful, Bianca as Judge Judy, and Jinx’ Judy Garland. 1) because you could see these queens saying/doing any of their one liners from snatch game sincerely and 2) it’s absurd to think of their character/celebrity doing or saying that, then it becomes funny.

I understand that this was just a project to do that wouldn't conflict with your riggory of S14 video, but I disagree with this criteria being used to judge Snatch Games. You mention multiple times in the video that editing of Snatch Games has changed over time, which has definitely included an increase in laughs to make Snatch Game more entertaining. The editors have simply gotten better at editing to make it entertaining. So why would the Season 14 cast getting more laughs be indicative of how they performed? If they wanted to make it obvious that everyone bombed, they would have edited all laughs out entirely, so I think they were throwing us a bone by keeping in the laughs that Ru would force in the first place so that we were entertained. You also show how mediocre Snatch Games have gotten way more laughs than you'd expect throughout the video, which literally just proves that laughs have nothing to do with how good a Snatch Game performance is. I agree that there was probably some producer meddling going on to make Ru not respond to decent jokes, but I bet they told him to do that once they saw how bad some queens were doing. If it was the plan from the beginning, why would Ru know to laugh at DeJa's jokes?

They didn't just spontaneously add an entire lipsync smackdown episode because they realized right there that the queens are bombing. This was all planned well ahead. But I agree that laughs are not indicative of how good or bad a snatch game is. This S14 snatch game is objectively bad (largely due to the editing to give the impression of bombing), so that making into #10 doesn't make sense anyway. The criteria are not correctly chosen.

It's not just the length of the segment that has changed, but also the amount of organic laughter from Ru. Maybe there should have been a poll, and it should have been considered how much the guests laughed too, since maybe they're reactions are more organic.

I think this snatch game suffered from being Cheryl Hole’s favorite word, mediocre. Nobody pulled a Utica or a Gia or an Aiden, so it was hard to judge. And Deja absolutely was the best, but it felt more along the lines of what usually is the 2nd or 3rd best performance. It did feel like a setup though because I guess RuPaul forgot about the “Yes, and” school of acting cuz she didn’t give them ANYTHING to go off of.

For people who are curious about where the AS7 Snatch Game falls on the list, I did the math: The game had a total of 77 laughs, snatching the 1st place on the list. If maybe you want to consider as two different snatch games because of the break to change characters, the 1st half had 37 laughs (getting the 5th place) while the second half had 40 laughs (getting the 4th place). Conspiracy theory: they thought up the lipsync episode twist before the season ever began, and purposefully 'ruined' the snatch game to A) generate all of this press which really worked, and B) justify another non-elimination episode & incorporate this pre-planned twist. How? well, an easy way to tank someone's improv performance is cut their thinking time. We don't know how much time they usually get to answer questions, but I have a hunch it's been slowly getting reduced over recent years as the snatch games are getting longer (so ru doesn't have to stand around as long) - the producers could have purposefully given these queens significantly less time so they had less chance of thinking up a funny answer (potentially why Daya was copying Bosco's answers, and how many of the queens jokes didn't fit the question in one way or another) ru could be purposefully not laughing at jokes to sell the storyline, and demoralise the queens into giving worse performances over the course of the snatch game. Maybe a condition of Daya's non-elimination was that she had to copy someone's answers if she got to snatch game? Who knows? That's why it's a conspiracy

I’m not inclined to get on board with conspiracies and claims of riggory. But something was definitely up. They had the rights cleared for 5 songs. Carson & Ross were both booked to shoot that day. And a pit crew member was there who presumably had to be medically cleared ahead of time. It’s hard for me to believe they pulled all that together overnight or even with a couple days, depending on the shooting schedule. That being said, it was a pretty bad SG in terms of its mediocrity. So maybe the opportunity for this type of drama just presented itself & they ran with it 🤷🏻‍♂️

I feel like counting the laughs like you said is not the best way to measure how funny the snatch game is. Specially considering Rupaul's humor is different from the overall audience (the best example being Scarlett as macaulay culkin). My favorites snatch games are season 6 and all stars 2, I feel like almost everyone did great even if Rupaul wasn't laughing that hard. Even if I agree they edited to look worse than it actually did on season 14, it's not like they were killing it either. The only one that made me laugh was Deja, everyone else I just cringed or looked bored at. Some were not horrible, like Candem or Angeria that could've been safe for me, but overall everyone had some flaws for me, so I actually didn't mind the whole lip sync smackdown twist.

it's hard for me to look at the older seasons without the nostalgia bias but i think that a part of what makes the newer snatch games so impressive is that the queens continue to do well, come up with original characters and jokes when it seems like everything has already been done. and i think it totally makes sense for the all stars 5 and 6 snatch games to be at the top, not only because of how much time the queens have had to grow & develop their comedy skills but because they're incredible casts who put in a lot of work and were able to showcase that growth by bantering with each other, being more confident to try out new things, etc. sorry this kind of got away from me but i appreciate this video it made me think a lot about the different eras of drag race!

I believe there the reason production chose to go with this storyline for the s14 snatch game for two reasons.. to justify the lipsync smackdown that was obviously pre-planned and to knock the frontrunners down a bit. I think they knew after the non elimination episode and the double save that they had to justify the existence of a lipsync episode somehow or it would just piss off fans who felt like the last few weeks have kind of stalled the season. The other side is that throughout the competition you can tell they've tried to spread out the wins but angeria Willow Bosco and lady Camden to a lesser extent have succeeded in virtually every challenge and without this twist the other 2 spots in the top 3 this week would've probably been some combination of Angie Camden and Bosco. Getting to see basically all of the frontrunners lipsync for their life will add dynamic to their storylines while also giving production a chance to gauge their lipsync abilities while keeping the stakes of them actually getting eliminated low.

S11 for me was the ONE TIME when the Lip Sync overshadowed the Snatch Game lol. For obvious reasons lol. I do feel bad for Silky, but the lip Sync between Yvie and Brooke was iconic.

Perhaps the problem is that, as seasons pass, the queens are expected to have a better performance every new season. It's been said many times "if you know you're casted for a season, take a sewing class and begin working on your Snatch Game because you know FOR SURE you will need those skills". So it becomes more and more upsetting when someone brings a Snatch Game character that has no jokes because it's like "girl, you had time to practice", and we become more upset when it's season 14 and we think all the cast, or the majority of it, should do great because they came prepared and then we only get a few laughs here and there. Season 13 and All Stars 6 were amazing because the majority came VERY prepared. For me it has always been more baffling when the queens are asked to change their character on the day because they at least feel some kind of connection or comfort playing that character, and unless there is someone else doing that same character, I see no point in changing what you already feel comfortable with. I always see it as Ru playing mind games with them and many times it doesn't work out for the better so I feel like we might have missed a solid couple laughs and instead we get a bad performance that only serves as drama for the judging or the elimination. BTW I also think Lady Camden did a good job.

I personally agree that season 14 is amongst the worst snatch games - the raw number of laughs is a good way of measuring how "successfully" funny the queens were, but I think you also need to account for how hard each joke made Ru laugh, as well as the spread of laughter in ranking. Having one or two people carrying a whole snatch game makes it harder for other people to get laughs. This isn't just true for snatch game, but comedy in general. Following a standup comic that got no laughs is challenging as you need to get the audience on your side again. I can fully picture a scenario in the room where joke after joke kept falling flat, making it successfully harder to make Ru laugh. We have to remember that this is all edited, and comedy in the moment is funnier. We've all told a funny story and had to follow up with "ah.. well you probably had to be there" Really good video and analysis but I think there is more to consider than just the "raw data" of laughs

I think season 14 is the worst, but not because the queens performed worse than in others, but because Ru and the editor were so mean-spirited that it ruined the experience of watching it. I want them to be on the side of the queens, show us the queens at their best. Don't gaslight them and humiliate them publicly in front of me. I'm absolutely sure that with 4 hours of footage, it's possible to do either.

pretty interesting video but i have to say that the type of laugh matters a lot, for instance a big laugh is much more important than a bunch of small chuckles. also editing definitely influences snatch game a lot, probably more than any other challenge. what we see might actually be better or worse than reality, based on whatever narrative the team wanted to show and who they wanted in the bottom.

there should've been some sort of multiplier to account for the length of time the snatch game was edited and aired bec ofc that affects the counting of rupauls laughs. personally i think a good snatch game is when good and terrible queens are obvious on the get go and when the good queens just volley off of each other and play around.
