Throughout The Sopranos, Tony certainly has his fare share of enemies and antagonists that we see throughout the series. But there';s no enemy that causes Tony more stress than his close friends in New York in The Lupertazzi Crime Family. No matter who their boss was, from Phil, Johnny, to even Carmine Lupertazzi Sr., they always costed Tony millions of dollars.

After my second watch of the show, that was the first thing that came to mind. In the end, Tony was right. John was an insecure guy who created a constant tension within his own family that spilled over.

@@izzo2998 I grew up in an Italian neighbourhood. There were 90% of the kids in my grade school, that were fresh off the boat, or their parents were. High school was a little better, but still loads of Italian kids. Their mothers would yell, straight across the school yard, like it's a normal way to communicate. Even at home, when I called, moms would stand by the phone and holler at their kids, to pick up the line. It was hilarious.

The joke was truly the downfall of both families. Before that, John was cool, calm, and collected in his dealings with NJ. But once he heard the joke, his real ego and insecurities came out as he was even willing to whack Ralph behind Carmine’s back. From here, things only got worse with the HUD scam and his desire to take over NY. He seemed to crave power and respect even over money, and this led to dire consequences for both families.

You really get that wrong every time you mention it. Every single time you phrase it as “carmine sided with Ralph over John bc Ralph made a lot of money and had ties to the Esplanade” anyone who’s seen the show knows that’s a vast misrepresentation of the situation. Have you seen how mob guys react to the scene of that sit down? Because it isn’t “John is right, his wife was disrespected and his Boss should side with him” it’s “so you’re having a sit down and refuse to give us the name of who told it to you, so we can have them back it up” like junior said, “if you weren’t there how do you know it happened” and he refuses to engage that point to not rat out Paulie, and because he knows Paulie would probably lie and say he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. If he had actually provided the name of who told him, Carmine wouldn’t have had to sanction the hit bc Tony said he’d offer them up on a silver platter. It paints Carmine character as if he was greedy and didn’t care about his own family, when what it actually shows is he’s level headed, and doesn’t blindly side with his underboss when what he’s asking for would cause nothing but damage, and he refuses to give proof. Boiling that situation down to “he just didn’t want to lose money” is disingenuous

Johnny Sack was an OG, who was huge when it came to the rules and regulations of LCN. Friends of ours this, friends of ours that. When it came down to it as far as a gangster goes John had one huge, glaring weakness....He loved his wife and children and what they meant to him more than "this thing of ours".
