He overestimated how popular he still is. He doesn’t have a fan base of young people who are willing to blindly and naively defend him. His core fanbase is smaller than it once was and the audience is probably older and less likely to accept the behaviour. Plus because of the “non-problematic” persona he tried to keep, he probably attracted a following of people who don’t have tolerance for this kind of thing

I think a lot of the issue here is the timing. Jeffree and Nikita already had that “bad girl” rep prior to the pandemic so no one was surprised when they continued being their, for lack of a better word, shitty selves. However, Patrick is trying to pull a 180 in a time where people are really paying attention to how influencers are handling this situation and it’s just not a cute look for him at all. I also think a lot of his behaviour is coming from desperation and he’s trying to find solitude in anyone who’ll support him which unfortunately are these problematic people. He’s always seemed fake, the failure and desperation has just brought it out at the worst possible time.

That's because the products he has launched ren't anything we haven't seen before, makeup wipes are useless (and this is said by many professional makeup artists and skin experts) the make up remover isn't anything special and overpriced, the liner and the palette are boring, kinda generic, and we can't forget that his brand is still in that full glam face with a lot of foundation, concealer and powder when the trend right now are natural faces. Hey Hannah, i'm at 2 mins in but this is about your social justice corner. Can you please discuss the violence against Asian people in the US/Canada. There's always been anti-Asian sentiments and Covid has heightened the racism. Elderly people (and young people) and getting attacked and assaulted for no reason and it's so sad and disgusting to see. Many Asian& Asian American celebs are sharing information but it isn't catching wind with the media. It would be great to have a spot on your platform to share this information and spread awareness so people know and actively condemn the violence. Through BLM we made it clear that it isnt enough to not be racist, we must be anti-racist and activated - we need to help our fellow Asian community and spread the word because this violence needs to end.

Two thoughts: Firstly, to speak to why being “messy” hasn’t worked for Patrick...I can’t help but notice that all of the people you listed are thin, conventionally attractive people (if exclude Nikita then they’re all white too). Looking at Patrick, a plus size POC, it doesn’t surprise me that the reception isn’t as warm. (Let me be clear though in saying that I don’t think ANY of what Patrick did is okay.) Secondly, I think to really succeed in the beauty space rn, you have to not only be personable, but also bring something new to the space. Take Robert Welsh for example. He blew the heck up in the past year largely because he brought years of professional experience. He really touts makeup theory and makeup for the average person, something we don’t see much anymore. Similarly innovative is Bailey Saiaran’s Murder Makeup Monday (which Robert has also emulated to huge success). I think that combo is really sets people up for success rn.

Everyone just either ignored them or called them out, to little change. But outside from disruption... they didn’t have anything going on, no hobbies or anything. They just thrived off the attention. One of the only unproblematic and interesting influencers I can think of is Bretman Rock. I think a major factor is that Bretman is just all-around entertaining regardless of what he does. Can you do a video talking about how the internet as a whole has kind of changed its mindset over the years? Like in bye sister, gabbie/ricegum drama, and tana/idubbz (defending a man who regularly says the n word and focusing on Tana lying)? I would love to hear your take on it
@yarashaheen-abuelreish89953 жыл бұрын
I'm genuinely shook that we focused on the lying part of the story ONLY instead of the overall problematic behavior on both sides. All Tana did in that video is exaggerate and lie, but idubbz normalized the n word for so many peoples. I'd also love to be reminded of the reactions to Gabbie and ricegum because now I can only see how one would side with Gabbie but it would be interesting to see why people stood against her besides her being annoying.
@Laila-md1xs3 жыл бұрын
@@yarashaheen-abuelreish8995 Exactly. Looking back at those situations years later it's crazy to believe how flawed the mindset of such a huge audience was. During the gabbie/ricegum incident people were so focused on how like tana, gabbie exaggerated when explaining what happened. As if a physical altercation and destroying property didn't put ricegum in the wrong?? And how did ricegum even get famous from making fun of literal children and no one said anything?
@l.l2743 жыл бұрын
I think a big part of it is auidence though. Both Ricegum and Idubbbz auidence were (mostly) young white boys who watched/liked edgier content, sprinkled in with a lil bit of self righteous attitude. This is partly because both of them made content on calling people out: Idubbz being his content cop series whilst ricegum made "these kidz must be stopped" which is still a form of commentary/call out. So to their auidences, being seen as a hypercite or a liar in a situation is far worse than anything else a person could have done (such as destruction of property and saying a slur) because both their auidences care more about image and a facade of moral superiority than actural bad behaviour.
@Laila-md1xs3 жыл бұрын
@@l.l274 Thats a very interesting point and I definitely agree with you. Those guys built armies of brainwashed fans that we don't even see now with newer creators. In shane's big scandal, even after going along with his blatant racism and just about everything-ism for years, a lot of his die-hard fans finally left. I wonder if the same thing would've happened if we had more objective commentary channels in the time of these other scandals?
@l.l2743 жыл бұрын
@@Laila-md1xs I think part of the issue (specifically with idubbbz) is that he IS a commentary channel. Not only that but he's known as like "the Godfather" of commentary along with Leafy because he has one of the most popular commentary series. And because his fans are so vicious (once again, similar to Leafy) anyone who disagreed with him just get's harrassed and called a "whiny SJW Snowflake". The only thing that has put a dent in Ian's career is the fact his girlfriend got an Only Fan's. Cause you know, his girlfriend getting an Only fan's is far worse to his auidence than his common use of slurs. This is partly because Ian in the past mocked sex workers so he than attracted an auidence that also mocks sex workers as well.

@elsiemae51823 жыл бұрын
I feel like a factor in how the general internet is reacting to Patrick’s recent behavior is the fact that he is a POC (is he black u literally have no idea it’s very confusing??) and he is plus size. All of the influencers who thrive off of being problematic are white or white passing and while I think Patrick is pathetic and attention seeking it does have a factor in how he is being though about right now. EDIT: Also I think that the whole tactic of doing something controversial before a launch to drum up hype only works if you are consistent with your image. Like you said Hannah, Patrick Star has been know man as the “unproblematic” beauty guru for so long that these clips came out of nowhere but for others it didn’t.
@stonecake3133 жыл бұрын
I think it’s cos he’s been “old news” in the beauty community for a long while now. The people who watched him at his peak have grown up and aren’t as interested in blindly loving him anymore. I think another reason for Patrick's inability to make money off of poor behavior just shows more racism in the beauty community. White influencers, like Tana or jeffree, were able to get away with capitalizing on drama, but partick is a person of color, therefore he isn't getting the same blind acceptance and forgiveness. Don't get me wrong, I don't support these actions, but I DO think it's important to acknowledge. Update: Frank's reply has changed my opinion. Nikita is a person of color who has built a career in controversy. A bigger sign of racism in the beauty community is the lack of support. It's harder for black creators to grow and excel, despite making good content.
@minajones83413 жыл бұрын

@franks84623 жыл бұрын
not necessarily. nikita somehow manages to stay relevant despite constantly lying, appropriating black culture, and profiting off black outrage. She's been going at it for years now and she is still profitable (just like Tana and Jaffar). nevertheless, racism is still a problem in the beauty community. i just don't think there are enough bipoc beauty influencers to support your claim. (Edit) If anything, racism in the beauty community is reflected more in the lack of recognizable bipoc beauty influencers.

I don't think it's about race in this specific situation. Jeffree, Tana, Trisha, Nikita, they've all cemented their reputations in being problematic and controversial No one gets surprised when they do something bad because we already have low expectations for them. Unfortunately when KZbinrs (or celebrities) get so popular, they're almost too big to fail and no matter what controversy they create, people will still support them.
