I fell in love with the series the moment I discovered it as an anime. I watch the very first episode when it first was uploaded to this anime watching site. Since then, I have watched every single episode more than once multiple different times. After learning there was a game, I Reserve that game as soon as I could. And I have reserved each copy of a new game that comes out every single time.

I was living in Japan during the peak popularity of Yo-kai watch and I’ll tell ya. It was everywhereeee on water bottles, arcades, backpacks, school supplies. Anything you could think of that a kid would need. I was so excited when the games came out here in the US and I really hope it’ll do well again on the switch !

I just kind of hated it when this series got labeled as a Pokemon rip off just because it's the same genre. Digimon was also the same genre that doesn't mean they are the same experience or that you have to pick one over the other. When I was a kid, I was hanging with my friend when she started watching Digimon, when I asked about it she described it as being the better choice over Pokemon. Opinions are fine but we were 7.. so it became a fight and I avoided Digimon out of spite and wanted to see it fail. I regret that. It was stupid and childish. We didn't have to treat the two series of games/anime like they are sports team and one has to win over the other. By the time Yokai-watch came out, I grew up and picked up the game. I wasn't going to treat Yokai-watch like I did Digimon and I thought Yokai-watch was fun.

I’m from America and let me tell you, this franchise is a MASTERPIECE. It is too underrated and it really doesn’t get the attention it deserves now. It’s cute and I think that the games were amazing. So many little aspects that make it stand out to other games. No matter what anybody says, this game will be my all time favorite childhood franchise.

@@D3sdinova I finished Yokai Watch 3 and I gotta say it's pretty good. 2 has a better story but 3 definitely made the combat more interesting and a lot of better quality of life stuff. I've also started to like the Hazy Lane more than the Infinite Tunnel.

Guys think of it this way. It’s December 7th, 2019. You are a casual gamer, occasionally choosing titles you find appealing. Smash Bros has been the hype going around the entire internet and, hey, you remember that one time in Middle School where you went to a friend’s house, played Brawl and had a very good time. You decide to visit the game store, looking for that specific game, and you spot a game from the 3DS. You are aware the console’s on it’s last legs. Hell, the Switch released a few years ago and it has proven to be a success, compared to the 3DS, where most games at this point are remakes or shovelware, nothing note-worthy. You have heard the name of the franchise every once in a while, and probably heard your younger cousin mentioning a TV show about it. As you stare at the 60€ in your wallet, you have to make a choice between the game you came for, and this random 3DS game. The choice is obvious, isn’t it? That was the experience for most European consumers, I’d say. Nintendo should have waited a little bit before releasing YKW3. They killed it by releasing it the exact same week as Smash. Everyone who wants to sell their game knows to avoid dates with such releases. It’s just common sense. Unfortunate Yo-Kai Watch was a victim of poor handling.

This tends to happen with anything coming out in the Creature Collector genre sadly... It happened with Digimon and YuGiOh, and it was bound to happen with YKW. It's a defensive maneuver... I do honestly wish Pokemon had a direct competitor, but I also wish people could take games in the same genre as their own things instead of saying "this game is better than that game" and driving each other further apart.

The sad thing about yo kai watch 3 is that I think it’s the best game in the series but when I went to buy it (like 3 days after the release) there were only 3 copies, they were all in the back of the shop and they didn’t even know they had them. Now a few days ago I went into a pretty big eb games (I’m Australian) and they had yo kai watch 1 and 2 on display with a bunch of merchendice but no yo kai watch 3!

The issue I've seen outside of USA is a mixture of: It's seen as a Pokemon clone from a glance. It's another cute monster hunting show/game. And the general target demographic are children of those that grew up with hundreds of these. (Pokemon, digimon, yugioh, monster rancher, dragon drive, bayblade, cardcaptors, shaman king...) they came and went without much thought. The anime here was seen as a parody and very much for children. No or little adult appeal. I tried it seeing it before the games or toys. It was boring with seemingly no overarching plot, character progression, and worked more in unconnected snapshots than anything episodic. The humour didn't appeal either. I stopped after the first season. Advertising. There was none here. Not for the games, toys, show, nothing. I didn't even hear of the series until I saw it on Netflix. Saw nothing in any of the game shops, nothing on tv, none of the let's players I watched were covering it with the exception of one and he only looked at the jap stuff. Most people and that includes the elementary crowd hasn't heard of it let alone watched or played. The lore and comedy isn't as accessible to a Western audience. I watch anime and I can safely say I could only pick out a handful of the common yokai. For someone who doesn't, or only watches the few shown on our networks... A lot is lost in translation. Kappa might be one of the few they'd recognize and even then I mentioned kappa to a young casual watcher and they didn't get it. If you don't understand the world you make less of a connection with it. The games... I played the first. I actually loved it for what it was. A cute monster collection game. The game felt far more mature over the anime, had some neat mechanics and in the advanced area could have some challenge and end game grinding fun. But once again I'm not talking with my gamer friends about yokai watch, no one else played or heard of it.

I visited Japan for the first time in years in 2014, at the height of Yokai Watch's popularity. While one of my friends absolutely refused to purchase anything Yokai-related because of how annoying its prevalence was, I fell in love with it immediately and YW1 was actually my first 3DS game. Even though I'm not proud of my 3DS overusage that summer and the one after that, YW still holds a pretty big spot in my heart. Although I knew that something was up after hardly anything was announced after YW3, I never returned to Japan and couldn't quite figure out the trajectory of the series. Thank you for making this video. You've made me want to purchase a Switch.

@@Rebel_riot151 so there’s three on switch I believe. The one I’m referring to is Yo-Kai Watch 4, or you could look up Yo-Kai watch Shadowside too (the anime for it). There’s also a little spin off title, I don’t know the name but it has all different characters and is basically the yo-kai as human reincarnations. It has an anime called Yo-Kai Watch Y (I think). And then there’s the original Yo-Kai Watch on the switch with improved graphics, I think this one is available in English but the others are not. I hope this helped! :)

I think a little problem is also that the franchise has numbers in it's title names. What I mean is that the continuations are called YoKai Watch *2* or YoKai Watch *3* . This way everyone who doesn't know the series will not start buying the latest version since they believe they have to play all the games prior to understand them, even though that isn't actually necessary. (Just noticed you kind of acknowledged that at the end)

Other things that benefitied Yo-Kai Watch sucess: 1) Pokémon was a stale franchise to the eyes of many people. While Gen 3 and Gen 4 are labeled as "the golden age" of Pokémon, many original players steped aside from Pikachu after Gen 2. Gen 5, despite being a breath of fresh air and actually really good games, turned off many older players. The BW anime didn't help much tho. 2) Gen 6 was underhelming. OR/AS was quite a disapointment. HG/SS set the bar quality for Pokémon remakes, and Gen 3 is a fan-favorite of many players (me included, being my first games). Many cool elements of Emerald were scraped over X/Y's elements, like the Battle Maison replacing the beloved Battle Frontier. The whole game was much more easier than R/S/E, which annoyed fans that played the originals. 3) 2015 was a empty year for Pokémon. Nothing big announced or released. Only some free-to-play games. 4) XY anime turned down many younger viewers in Japan. There was a space for a new kids cartoon to strike. 5) While Pokémon happens in a fictional world (and since Gen 5 regions are based outside of Japan), YW happens in our world, or better, it happens in Japan, in a normal quiet town. YW was simple, kids could relate to Nathan's much more than any silent Pokémon Trainer from the games. Also, Pokémon was getting way to complicated with it plot and world building. In YW things happen in a much more slow and small level. 6) The first YW game had much better looking graphics than Gen 6 Pokémon games. It even had rotating camera! And it ran like a charm on Old 3DS models, without even needing the Expanded Memory Mode than Pokémon Sun/Moon and many other 3DS games need. 7)YW mixed virtual monster collecting with real-life monster collection using those Yo-Kai Medals. Its like collecting stickers. Its much more appealing and engaiging than Pokémon, which you could easily exploit with hacks and the GTS. YW instigued kids to go out and play the game outside. Pokémon became a in-doors game (at least until Pokémon GO was released).

I get the censoring, but one it’s a game meant for children (Japan is a lot more opening to foul language than most of the world is), and two the typical small American suburbia setting has always been charming. It actually makes it stick out from the rest if anything, most Japanese devs don’t really choose that type of setting besides Capcom and Konami sometimes.

Even though i met Yo-kai Watch barely two years ago, i really became obsessed with the franchise and could even call it a part of my "childhood" even though it was entering my teenage age haha. Because of Yo-kai Watch, i joined a community in which i put myself in an effort to make better art (so i can draw the complicated yo-kais lmao) and made a lot of friends! Due to everything, this ended up making my life quality much better, and helped me go trough some quite VERY rough times, that made me feel the worse i've ever felt in my life. I've left YKW aside because it stopped entertaining me as much as other franchises did, but still hold it in my heart. Seeing it go will truly be sad, but at least it existed and changed my life for the better :") I hope it succeeds!

Yo-Kai Watch was the first ever game Series that made me *unable* to play anything else. My favorite game was the first game. I could describe it with full details for hours. It was such a perfection, I never got bored a single minute. It's one of the few game series in which training up is actually fun. I loved the artstyle dearly as well. I didn't try part 2 but got ykw3 and it was pretty awesome as well. I was hyped for it and got it after a few days after its release. I loved it too but my most memorable game will be the first one.

All the games are good, gets deep too so there is value. They can game break with coin codes but it opens doors too. I love the lore but hate the US edits. Sucks it dropped in popularity but I got a HUGE deal on clearance stuff from that. I even imported the mini coin machine from japan. I watched the show that was ok on netflix but edits suck. I moved to Okinawa in mid 2014. One of the first things I saw just after I moved in was a billboard with Jibanyan on it. When I lived there, Yo-Kai Watch was definitely at the peak of its popularity. My students would often speak of the games, and around Christmas time of that year, I asked them what they wanted for Christmas, and most of them wanted "New Youkai Watch 2 game", what became Psychic Specters stateside. It was so popular it was the subject of a couple of staff meetings where I worked. By the time my contract was up and I ended my time in Okinawa, the worldwide release announcement came. I let my students know this, and they were like "Oh, America didn't have it before?" Silly kids. Anyway, I bought the first game not long after I moved back to New York. I thought the first one was charming and fun. Since all my students hyped up the second game I was more excited for it, but I personally felt the first game was better. I'm only about 1/4-1/3 of the way through Yo-Kai Watch 3, but I already feel it's better than 2. I feel like most western players went into this game EXPECTING Pokémon, or a REALLY SIMILAR experience, and ultimately set themselves up for disappointment. Jimmy Whetzel on KZbin certainly did and decided to make a KZbin video about it. I don't know how much influence he actually has over his fans, or how big his fanbase truly is (he seems to be associated with the Game Grumps every so often, so, I imagine it's sizable), but I'll bet people strayed away from the game from watching his video about the series alone.

yo-kai watch was the boom when I was in primary school, I live in Australia and where I used to grow up every kid had a yo-kai watch game or literal *watch and medallions* I remember playing the first game so much, I first discovered the franchise when I saw the anime and I absolutely loved it and eventually I finally got the first game. I never even knew that yo-kai watch was originally a video game series though, that surprised me.

I'm not 100% sure if anyone mentioned this yet but Yo-kai Watch 3 has sold pretty well in the US. It was even the #1 most selling game on the eshop for about a week even beating POKEMON. This series is far from dead as I see it. Even if it dies in the west I believe it still has a very long life ahead of it in Japan.

Yes, but this seems like a pretty good indication of it getting back on the right track. I’m a massive Pokémon fan and man is extremely exhausting seeing this decline in Pokémon of all things, S&S it’s a joke (not the Pokémon themselves) and I’m tired of the same formula, S&M are the best games in the series IMO because at least they tried to be different. I got the first Yo-Kai Watch and man it’s refreshing this new and underrated game, there’s so many things here that Pokémon lacks as a game and im addicted to it. It’s really unfortunate that it has never found it’s footing in the west. You still see some copies here in Germany every now and then but the European market alone ofc isn’t enough to justify localizations of that scale. I guess that’s the reason why yokai watch 4 will probably never release overseas. It’s not a problem for me since I can read Japanese but I know quite a few people who are just missing out, because a huge appeal of the game is the dialogue and if you don’t know Japanese you either just walk around without understanding anything or won’t even bother

Ironically, they seem to have underproduced physical copies of Yokai Watch 3, and they're going for fairly high prices in the aftermarket. The toy line would have been a major addition if it had stayed active in America. The medals for the watch actually interact with the game in the Japanese version - an NFC chip in the medal are read by the 3DS amiibo reader, and give you bonuses in the game. That was removed for the US/Europe release.

yo-Kai watch was really cool, I remember always begging my parents for the actual watch you could get with the medals. I loved the idea of your troubles in every day life being these huge “monsters” nobody sees. Nate was awesome. I quoted Jibanyan -gets hit by a trucc- every time I punched something. When it got cancelled, it was pretty sad, since it was the first show I was really dedicated to watching and actively enjoyed, from a western viewpoint. It’s also one of the few shows from my childhood that I get actual nostalgia-nostalgia from and not just a few memories. I’m a lot older now, and I barely pay attention to tv much anymore- but if YKW made a comeback, I’d be there. I have to rewatch the movies anyway. that show was _brilliant_

I live in Germany and the Anime Aired in Nickelodeon before i knew about the Game, Watched it, and when I discovered the Game wich Made me even more excited. Sadly in Germany, Yo-Kai Watch was almost NOT existing. The Anime got cancelled after season 1 wich lead to Kind of the downfall in Germany. They even stopped to Produce commercials for the games and the Toys wich Made me Kinda sad. The commercials for YKW2 also Aired Like, Two days and they where GONE. So it got kinda cancelled... We still got all the other Games but now sadly Level 5 confirmed to Stop producing Things Outsider of Japan. So, YKW4 was confirmed to come Out in other countrys of the world, but now its cancelled for everyone... Sadly it dont seems so that we See any Professor Layton or Yo-Kai Watch Games.

Unlike Pokemon, Yo-kai watch actually takes the chance to change their gameplay up a bit, whilst still having some similarities to the base game. Pokemon on the other hand, makes you pay £50 for a game which you basically have already played, with the only difference being the amount of pokemon there are.

I am not going to offer any pessimism towards Yo Kai Watch's future because from the response that I have seen for YK4, it's finally being considered that it'll become a huge success-in not just Japan but worldwide as well. Which is most importantly, the thought of the audience and not the executives. This is significant to regard because it was them from the start of Yo Kai Watch's lifespan that believed it'd be a hit when the results showed they were clearly out of touch with gamers. And the reason for this is you have people disappointed with the reveal of Pokemon Gen 8, people who are fans of Ni No Kuni or Yo Kai Watch and people who can simply appreciate good presentation which makes them nod their head in consideration. Second, remember my mention of Pokemon earlier? Yeah, according to my friend who's far more into the deep end of the internet, it's all some people talk about. Which is to to say: 'Pokemon Sword and Shield vs Yo Kai Watch 4 for Best Game of 2019'! So, it's still got its biggest marketing rep which has the table finally turned for 'looking worse' to 'looking better' for the majority. And maybe it's just because I live in Europe, but there were plenty of Yo Kai Watch 3 games in Gamestop that were all sold out when I had the money ready in February. Second, you have to remember it was against some tough competition and on a 'dead' console, which I know you stated in your video but it can't be said enough. Third, when it comes to Pokemon comparisons with Yo Kai Watch, the one everyone forgets is Pokemon had a decline in popularity too. Although, I ask, where is it now?

I love this series. The games are decent, but the anime is pretty great. I just love how weird and wacky it is, and it embraces it. They've even crossed-over with Don-Chan, from a Rhythm game, which was his first international appearence. I do know about the pinned comment, and yeah, the Yo Kai watch fanbase is pretty bad. I'm even embarrased to say I'm a Yo Kai Watch fan, because of the fanbase. And the comments are just the start, if you want really bad stuff, look at "Yokai watch response", that series is full of bias. Anyway, yeah. Great vid.

Man on that day when I got my hands on Yo Kai Watch, and went on that amazing adventure full of amazing and creative creatures, Life has never been the same. Man I wish the marketing for the first game wasn't the worse thing ever, because when I saw it I had absolutely no interest in the game what so ever. Luckily a friend at my school had Yo Kai Watch, and allowed me to play the game for like, 10 minutes and just 10 minutes was enough to make me get the game for my self. Fortunately, Nintendo has been giving the games a lot better advertising, especially on their YT channel. I just hope that YKW4 get's shown off in a direct or even at E3 (idk thou since it releases basically the week before E3).
