I had a Drake SW8 and that thing was a powerhouse.I just used about 100 ft speaker wire.Bought a spool of 50 ft and just pulled it apart in 2 sections to make 100ft.Just tied a rock to it and flung it high in a tree.It picked up everything.Works great for decoding digital signals,Fax,rtty,ECT.I paid 800.00 for it back in 2000.Used ones here in 2022 still run at about 500.00..Also used a square antenna indoors just making a big square on a wall.Worked very good.Cut alot of noise out.

There has actually been a resurgence of interest in recent years in the original R8 receiver which has a more robust main encoder knob and in some ways has audio that is preferable to the R8A/B. Prices for R8 receivers have actually remained quite stable hovering in the $400 to 600 range depending on condition and year of manufacture. Prices for R8Bs have remained very stable hovering in the $900 to 1200 range

Kevin you have an great selection of some of the best shortwave Communication receivers . I think Drake designed the Grundig Satellit 800 and used some elements from the R8. The Japanese made comms receiver were very well built even the more modest Yaesu FRG models. I owned a Drake SW4A tube receiver at one stage but had the FRG-7 as well and it was no match for the Frog so sold it.

Actually the SAT 800 was directly designed from he SW8, though surely the R8xxxx series influenced as well

If I remember one Grundig radio had the exact same display as my Drake SW8.So I believe you are right.Ive seen that alot with SW radios. It would be the exact same radio, but under different brand names, for the lower end radios anyway.
