Miami Dolphins wide receiver Duriel Harris is best known as the man who pitched the ball during the 1981 divisional against the San Diego Chargers in the hook and ladder play. But two years before that play, he wanted absolutely nothing to do with Miami, as after an incident that happened during a Monday Night Football game against the Houston Oilers, he demanded a trade, and was frustrated with Bob Griese and Don Shula. This is the story of the drama surrounding the 1979 Dolphins

You seem to have an infinite supply of topics but I'll suggest one. In 1973, the jest played pittsburgh. Surprisingly enough, they lost. Imagine that. Nonetheless, at one point they managed to drive 41 yards for a touchdown. They were aided by 48 yards in penalties. So yes, they managed to score a TD on a drive where they had -7 yards in total offense. I realize this is the jest and by their standards it's kinda minor (given the team it's a surprise they scored at all), but it's just quirky enough to be worth a dive.

Excellent choice. Another one I like is in 1970 when Csonka is running upfield full speed near the sideline, in front of the Miami bench. As Buffalo Bill's free safety Pete Richardson comes up to try to tackle him, Csonka veers directly at Richardson and deliberately smashes Richardson violently upside his helmet with a massive forearm blow. The refs actually flagged Csonka on the play, charging HIM with a personal foul for unnecessary roughness. Richardson was knocked way off his feet, and knocked out as well .......

I swear I don't try to catch OBJ9 being inaccurate, but at 10:51 he doesn't mention that in the second Colts game Strock did start, but completed just 3 of 6 passes for 50 yards. He did throw a TD pass to Harris, but even if all three completions were to Harris that still would've been less than half his catches and yards for the game. Griese came in and was 9-17 for 128 and 2 TDs. Strock must've left that game with an injury because he did start the next game VS the Pats and was a measly 3-12 for 62 yards and 2 picks before Griese came in and completed 8 of 10 for 101 yards and a TD as the Fins reeled off 27 unanswered points to win. Griese started the next game, a win over the Lions that clinched everything Miami could possibly clinch playoff-wise, before Strock started the now meaningless finale (and lost to the Jets).

DolFan 316 you are spot on as Griese recovered somewhat after his benching but as a long time Dol-Fan myself that playoff vs Pittsburgh was a disaster.The Dolphins fell behind 20-0 and 34-7 and looked like a high school team vs the Steelers who were in route to their 4th Super Bowl win in 6 years.The Steeler debacle was Larry Csonka's last game as a Dolphin as well and the problem here that Griese and Csonka who were key players in the turnaround season of 1970 were starting in that Steelers disaster on the next to the last day of the 1970s as it was clear Griese and Csonka were over the hill.I do not blame Harris in this deal and give Coach Don Shula credit for not getting rid of Harris as the smart coach Shula was probably saw that Harris was right and Griese who I liked was washed up.

@@kimblandino Lmao he literally threw a pick to a defensive lineman on the goal line after ripping the ball from James Conner's hands; you can claim scape goat all you want, but this specific loss to the Broncos that I'm talking about was indeed 100% his fault and he refused to be a leader and take responsibility for it, instead choosing to throw his rookie receiver under the bus for a pass he laid out for to try to catch. It was that moment that I was done with him. He makes bad decisions at the worst possible times (him airing dirty laundry on his show being one of them), and this fact is inarguable; it's a pattern he's shown throughout his entire career. It's sickening, woke sports celebrating mediocre Mike with his 3 playoff wins in 10 years with a HoF QB that his staff can't put together a coherent gameplan of complementary football. The man is out of his league, and the overwhelming talent the Steelers have on both sides of the ball covers that up most of the time. Go watch the Tebow playoff game, or the Bortles playoff game. Tell me dogshit, dirt worst you have ever seen coaching didn't lose those games. You bring up the Denver game from 2018 and put it all on Ben when AB ran a lazy route at the goaline. The only reason we are even in that position at the end is Ben's beautiful pass to JuJu for 97 yards and a TD. @mayduck1
@mayduck1 3 жыл бұрын
Don Strock was one of the best relief QB's ever as he could quickly read a defense but he was not mobile and would get sacked a lot and injured as well so he did not do as well playing a full game. David Woodley was a 8th round draft pick out of LSU in 1980 and became the Dolphins starter that season because Griese and Strock got hurt.Woodley was the exact opposite of Strock as he could scramble and run and Don Shula who I believe is the best coach ever used both Strock and Woodley in the 1981-82 seasons and that combo is called Woodstrock. Woodley who had troubles reading defenses and lacked leadership qualities could go 17 out of 22 passing in a playoff win vs the Pats but three weeks later completed 4 out of 14 in the Super Bowl loss to the Redskins and is rated as one of the worst QB's in Super Bowl history .Don Shula months after that loss saw Dan Marino on the draft board and picked him and by midseason of 1983 Marino was the starter and David Woodley would be a Steeler by 1984.

Completely not related but I was wondering if you recalled a certain game that I am having trouble locating. It was one of the worst games I've ever seen and I SWORE it was a Monday Night Football game between the Giants and the Chiefs. That's how I remember it anyway. It was a series of missed field goals in a game that nobody seemed to want to win. I thought it was Giffird-Cosell-Meredith on the call but can't find it. Ring any bells?

It was the 1983 season, week 8. New York Giants at St Louis Cardinals on Monday night football. The full game is currently available on KZbin, in two parts, for watching. There is also currently a 29 minute condensed highlights version of the game on KZbin as well. 7-17-2021

One thing that really stands out is how long Griese held the ball. He was one of the greats, but this film shows him with a weak arm, poor accuracy, poor timing, and poor field vision.

Didn’t Griese eventually end up starting again by the end of the season that year? I remember seeing him play in the divisional playoff game against the Steelers, how did Griese eventually get back his starting role in the 1979 season?

In a Thursday night game against the Patriots, Strock started the game but struggled. Griese came in in the second half and had a monster game in leading the Dolphins to a come-from-behind 39-24 win, then Griese started the rest of the season. For the record, Harris was held without a catch in the Pats game.

8:39 should've been "He had a passer rating just above 40, which is still better than if you took the ball and spiked it on every play."

1. At 11:45 you show Harris catching a touchdown, then limping soon afterwards. What you don’t see is the fact that he hyperextended his knee while leaping and spiking the ball in celebration. So he pulled a Gramatica 20 years before Bill did. 2. Harris didn’t actually leave the team then come back? Isn’t that a prerequisite for these videos? 3. Watch at 4:04, then watch kzbin.info/www/bejne/qoWpZZqEa72bfJI

A hyperextended knee is a couple of weeks tops. Gramatica blew out his ACL. I once asked him about that when he played for the Tampa Bay Storm of the Arena Football League and he just chuckled and said, "C'mon, man." But say what you want but he and his brothers are really good and charitable guys.

funny thing about that oiler game in '79. phins learned how to stop earl campbell after he ran all over them for 199 yds. on mnf the year before. and that phin team was basically the remnants of the sb teams of the earlier '70's. they flashed some of that greatness once in a while but were just like griese...basically a shell of their former selves. phins were lucky becase colts were lousy at 4-6 meaning bert jones was out with injuries once again. they sukked without jones at qb. and harris should have been traded. to cold weather gb or minn. just for his constant complaining. at least he got to play one year with marino who could get him the ball. too bad by then moore, duper, and clayton were ahead of him on the wr depth chart.
