Being raised by a narcissistic and abusive mother, with a father who enabled her --- I have shifted through all 3 roles throughout my life, with my brain trying constantly to find ways to survive. Thank you so much for this video, I'm gonna show this to my trauma therapist so I can work on my own toxicities.

You are very welcome and thank you for sharing so openly. It’s so great that you have a therapist to work through this with and wish all the best for you on your journey ❤️

Thanks for this. My therapist mentioned the drama triangle today. I'm a single man who is dating a woman who is currently enabling another man (victim) and their friendship is platonic. She went from the rescuer (he needed a place to live and is a popular local musician) and she is now the victim because she literally went bankrupt supporting the dude. My initial reaction is to want to come in as the rescuer, that's what I've been most of my life and it definitely hasn't worked out well (10 years in a narcissistic cycle of abuse, completely healed after 5 years of intense self-work). Learning about the drama triangle just saved me a lot of time. Thank you for the easy to understand language and fun presentation.

The Drama Triangle was based on ancient Greek plays over two thousand years ago. I had been mostly in the role of a 'victim' when I was a young naïve passive man. However, after more life experiences and self improvement plus reading about TA and games people play I become confident and assertive. I am now able to deal with conflict situations from toxic people.

The best explanation I've found. Thank you. Putting victim at the bottom and rescuer and persecutor on the same level really makes it make more sense energy wise. Total game changer. Love it!!!

What’s interesting is that this triangle of conflict can exist with in a single person when they are especially fragmented.
@aishaeveleigh76684 жыл бұрын
I can identify times where my mind falls into these three categories at different times and am interested to know if my mind is fragmented. I think it's normal for minds to float in and out of all three, it's about identifying that in a mindful way and not falling into it too much. I'm interested about what you mean by fragmented as I've not heard of these before? Thanks :)

I was talking about a problem with my boyfriend to a friend and they said that is was a drama triangle… I see al three of these types of people in him. And I find myself trying to comfort him when he’s the “victim” but he’s trying to “help me” by telling me what to do like the rescuer, and if I don’t need the help didn’t ask for it and have got it under control and let him know that I appreciate the help but I don’t need it he becomes the persecutor… idk what to do?

The rescuer is the most toxic role in the triangle. Mostly because people who believe it’s their job to fix other peoples problems are usually very arrogant and extremely abusive and depend on how others view them for their self esteem. Therefore building an ego.

It looked great but problematic ending "identify toxic relationships we're better off without", that is the concept of "toxic relationship" itself is PART of the drama triangle. It's how the victim sees the persecutor, and how the persecutor sees the victim. Both of them hope their problems exist in this other "toxic" person and that they can better get their needs met somewhere else, while bringing the same bad strategies and same "default position" into it. If "toxic relationships" exist, it is because it is hard to get out of habits that you find yourself with a specific person, and so you can gain perspective by setting boundaries and widening your relationships, and you can try to bring skills and perspective from those new relationships to change your habits in older ones. Think about parent-child relationships. Teens naturally rebel from parental authority, and may back away from parents for a few year or longer, and that doesn't mean the parent(s) are/were toxic, but that parental authority issues exist in dependency states, and that's ambivalent, both good and bad, and rebellion itself can be good because it means you're ready for more personal responsibility. And similar in relationships with siblings, and things like going off to college allows a break in those relationships and they can change later. But if you read about "toxic relationships" online you can easily convince yourself you are a victim and you need to punish parents or siblings for past wrongs, or stay estranged for years, while that is not solving anything, and just keeping their power over you in your mind.
@HolisticADHDCoach4 жыл бұрын
Hey aresmars2003. Interesting perspective and thanks for your comment as it gives me an important opportunity to clarify this. I would agree with you if I had said "toxic person", because as you rightly say, thinking of people in that way is a consequence of being in the drama triangle. But I'm not talking about "toxic people" - as per the quote you pulled out of the video - I'm talking about identifying "toxic relationships" - ie. unhealthy interactions we have with others. The drama triangle helps us to identify these toxic relationships - relationships (not people) that we are better off without - keep the person, change the relationship. Perhaps this could be misconstrued by some but I think in the context of the video, as I don't talk about cutting people out of your life, and the whole video focuses on being empowered to change the way you interact with people, that it is unlikely to be misinterpreted as you suggest.
@aresmars20034 жыл бұрын
@@HolisticADHDCoach Thanks for the clarification. And this is why I appreciate the drama triangle, for helping us see the roles we play, rather than labeling people, which I hate. I also appreciate the Four Agreements for helping me see how to hold better integrity with self and others. www.miguelruiz.com/the-four-agreements 1. Be Impeccable With Your Word. 2. @HolisticADHDCoach6 жыл бұрын
Hey there, thanks for your comment and I'm sorry to hear you are experiencing symptoms of Complex-PTSD and depersonalisation - these are not symptoms that are easy for any one of us to deal with on our own. Thankfully there are some great treatment options, including psychological therapy, which a healthcare professional can talk to you about. If you, or anyone else reading this comment wants to know more about C-PTSD and the treatment options, this link is helpful: www.healthdirect.gov.au/complex-ptsd and is from a trusted health care source in Australia. In regards to The Drama Triangle, we all experience the different "ego states" as you refer to them - we tend to start off in one but we all end up becoming the rescuer, the persecutor and the victim. It is useful framework and tool - as is writing therapy as you mention here - but I do want to be clear that I am not a therapist and it is important to seek the appropriate advice and treatment. Wishing you all the best. Lauren

Tammy Thurston - well essentially yes and no. The trauma triangle has additional ideas introduced to it but the drama triangle is the foundational building block. It’s sort of like asking ‘am i the same person as I was two years ago?’ ‘Yes or no?’ The answer is ‘yes and no’ - I am the same person but I’ve also learnt more and (hopefully) grown as a person. Make sense?

@HolisticADHDCoach5 жыл бұрын
The roles all move around in the drama triangle - they aren't static. We usually have one role we typically fall into (the "starting gate role") but as the dynamic plays out it changes. We can move from victim to rescuer to persecutor, persecutor to rescuer to victim, rescuer to persecutor to victim...etc.

hmmm ... not such a good diagnosis of the the trjangle, I sense that you think you have a grasp upon it based upon your own interpretation .. ie the starting role as in you practically presume everyone enters as a Rescuer or Persecutor, but fob off entering as a Victim ... Maybe you should re-assess and wonder why you did this ? Where you thinking of yourself or your parents ?? 🤔
