The mortises for the drawer front were cut in Part 3 and now it's time to make the drawer side tenons. I use a "hybrid" method making the shoulder with the table saw and using a hand saw and chisels to cut out each tenon. One thing you might notice is that the mortise and tenons joints are not arranged in the way that benefits the drawer. Most times, you want your drawer joinery oriented in such a way that the interlocking components resist the front to back motion of the drawer. But in this case, I wanted to make a strong visual statement and given the kind of use this drawer will see, I have zero concerns about the drawer coming apart in the future. The tight fit and the glue bond means that drawer is going to easily outlive anyone reading these words.
You should also notice that keeping the drawer sides at an angle creates a lot of extra work for us. Installing the drawer bottom and the slides both become trickier than usual but I think the extra work is worth it for such a unique drawer. And the angle is necessary for our parallelogram through tenons so I'm very happy with the design choice.
The finish I'm applying here is Rubio Monocoat, a hardwax oil. It's an incredibly easy to apply, low-lustre finish that provided enough protection for a desk. And perhaps most importantly, makes future finish repairs very easy.
I hope you enjoyed this series and thanks for following along.

Marc. Even as a member of the Guild, I like this format too. The parts that give some advice as well as a little "whoops" when you thought you were all done, is what all of us find in our efforts. Thank you for all that you and Nicole do within the woodworking and now cooking arena.

I didn't think I'd like this project because of all the odd angles. I'm glad I watched the entire thing, it came out much better than I expected. With the different woods with the angles they complemented each other. Really nice desk! Thanks, it was enjoyable to not only to watch but I also learned a few things along the way.

I love this video series. All the cool angles look "simple" but getting it all to fit together and line up just right take a lot of thought and preparation. I think this is also a great way for anyone to get a "taste" of what a full guild project looks like.

Hey Marc. Your website and videos are just great. You make for a great teacher! One remark: You detail every step, maybe adding in the blog or video description all the tools you used for the jobs you do would help realise what is needed for this or that project. Thanks for sharing all this knowledge, wisdom and great ideas with us!

I really appreciate you bringing back these longer format build videos. I don't have enough time to do the projects I want to do to justify me being a guild member at this point in my life (though hopefully I will soon!), but I love watching craftsmen like yourself making beautiful things until then.

This is definitely for advanced woodworkers, I'd have trouble making a humble square desk... I've gotten the 2x4 and plywood workbench thing nailed for shop use... but you are truly a master craftsman!

But in the meantime I love some of these longer more detailed videos, even though I know they are a lot of work for you. I've been watching you for many many years, and I appreciate that you don't assume levels-of-skill; "remember to only glue the panel in the middle, and not the entire thing". For the master craftsman, it's second hand. For the new guys, that are dizzy from all the angles, it's a great reminder! Sure... the final piece is amazing and the 4 part series editing must have been taxing. But, the best part for me was watching someone of your skill level do mental gymnastics to 'make it happen'. There are too many videos for me to mentally recall, but this is probably my favorite. "Mah boy is wicked smaht!"

Outstanding! Great design and implementation. Cannot ever go wrong with walnut can you. I was totally blown away until the last shot which showed the drawer open exposing those ugly drawer slides. Great video as always.! thank you!! Regarding the drawer being too lose, it is important to note that if it's lose by a tiny amount like 1/16" or so, there are specific screw holes on the slides that allow the slide to self adjust and come out closer to the drawer side once you close and open your drawer a couple of times. Just FYI!
