Today I am dreaming of my Volkswagen Bus. I have come to an expert in the field of VW. To learn about VW Buses, Explore some old VW Buses, Talk about VW Buses, and just try and soak as much knowledge and wisdom about VW Buses as I can.
This is where it starts. Will I be restoring a volkswagen bus someday. I don't know. Will I purchase a newer bus someday? Not sure. The Dream has just begun.
PLEASE PLEASE Share this video on any VW social media pages that you can. I want as much expert knowledge in the comment section as we can scrounge up!
A BIG THANK YOU to Jerry from J.A.C. Autos and his Nephew John for sharing their love and passion for Volkswagen with me.
I learned a lot this day and am excited as ever for my VW Bus!

When I was a kid I hated this buses. I had a 71 VW bug and wanted a Ghia and still do but now as I'm older these buses have grown on me and now I want one. Something about living simple and traveling wherever that makes these things appealing. You will work on these but it's truly not a big deal.

everyone got a vw story my story starts back in72 I was 8 yr old my dad brought a 49 bus it was a rust bucket then and he caused at it every day he hated the 16in rims so tossed em he was into heavy drugs acid and misculin was his choice he decided to take my 2 brothers and I to the gulf for Christmas vacation it was about a 500 m drive south it took us about 5days to get there we spent all day swimming and the tide came in and damn near took the bus well any way on our way back we passed a blue ridge mountain sign. like I said dad liked his drugs and mom wasn't there for she had passed away from leukemia any way we made it back to to rt7 north when we lost 2 cylinders so it was low gear the rest of the way to mid Missouri that was the last of that bus later on about 20 some years ago I got a job at a vw Restoration shop and worked there till just present and on of my VW's I bought 20yr ago I still have it's a 63 bus poptop and it ain't original at all but I drive it daily think I'll sell it after I die lol

Dude, your intro nailed on the head exactly what a Volkswagen Bus is. They're magic. Absolute magic contained in 4 wheels, German steel, and an aircooled enigma of an engine. I hope you find her my dude; I found mine last summer and I've been putting money into her ever since. She's almost ready for the road now. Good luck man, see you on the highway.

Look at www.thesamba.com/vw/ they have a lot of them. For me I would recommend a 1978-79 with automatic and AC. In 1978 they had hydraulic valve lifters, so no adjustment were needed. Switch your distributor over to electronic, put in platinum spark plugs and use full synthetic oil for low maintenance. The AC would need to be upgraded to a newer style rotary compressor (Sanden) and R134a. The rotary compressor only takes 4 hp instead of 11 hp.

Ive owned many vw buses over the years. You better learn the mechanics of these machines. Lots of info still around. If its not a fulie, rebuild the carbs completely ( replace everything) make sure you keep the valves adjusted regular. #3 exhaust valve has a nasty habit of breaking off and falling down on the piston if it gets too far out of adjustment. Message me if you have questions, i know theses machines well. Replace all the fuel lines and carry a spare throttle cable with you at all times. Good luck man.

The steps I usually go through when deciding what vehicle I want is: Step 1: Decide what model year you most like. Step 2: Visualize what you want it to look like (paint color, wheels...) I usually find a picture of a car on Google images and copy the pic to Microsoft paint and try to paint what I want over the existing picture. Otherwise an old trick would be to print off a picture of the vehicle and lay another piece of paper over it and try to trace out the body lines, then use markers or paint to color it in. Step 3: Decide if your going to restore it within factory specifications or modify/customize it. Step 4: Get a rough idea as to how much your probably going to pay for the vehicle and how accessible parts are for it. Don't try to figure out the total cost of everything together, otherwise you tend to scare yourself away from the idea. Just go piece by piece. Trying to get the project done in one shot is near impossible. Step 5: Be prepared to have this project sitting in your garage or driveway for potentially a few years depending on how much progress you make on it. I've been working on a project car myself and even though I have most of the parts I need I still haven't made any progress on it for about 3 years. My current problem is finding a body shop that has the time to paint everything. I don't want to hand my car off to a place that is going to rush through everything, leaving me feeling I wish I had gone elsewhere. Good luck Matt! Get a mental vision as to what you want this VW Bus to be and do your best to maintain that vision and see it through.

Go Matt! You will get your bus sooner than you realize :). I manifested mine literally overnight! I felt like looking at them on line one night and the high prices blew me away!! But I chose to not let that stop me. I said to myself 'No! money is not an issue!' I will manifest one by just playing the 'game' of manifesting through what you are showing here, joy, enthusiasm, seeing the fun in it! I realized I had always loved them since being driven round by a girlfriend in hers during my Uni days, with all it's warts! I collected a few images over the last yr and then forgot about it. Then as I said I 'felt' like looking at then a few weeks ago again and the next day I got on FB ....and there he was up for sale on a community noticeboard!!!!... in the 2 tone I loved! red and white. There were sooo many comments on the post (because it really was a good price for what it was), but I decided 'Don't look at those!!!' Kombi is yours!..... I didn't have more than a few $$ to buy it, I put a very small deposit on him within 3 days though and an image of me in it waving and laughing on my desktop to constantly look at and laugh at (I looked ridiculous!lol)....To cut an even longer story short, 3 weeks later on my 50TH Birthday 4 Jan 2018, Kombi was mine! lol still laughing at the miracle of it all. You will get your Kombi mate I have no doubt! xo. Angela

Matt, I have a feeling from the video that you'll be a devout and happy Bus owner once you make the leap, I agree with most of the info and advice from Jerry and "J". First, research and decide on the the of model and the era of VW Transporter that you prefer. Then buy the best Bus you can afford in terms of lack of rust and damage, and then the most complete (not missing much parts). It is always easier to fix/repair mechanical issues (even missing or broken engines) than to repair rust issues. Contact me, I'll be happy to advise.

very cool, never owned one but hear theyre very easy to work on, the motor is held in by 4 bolts. they make higher hp motors, but they arent cheep. it was funny when j sed about oil changes, on my '16 nissan frontier they say 5000 mile oil changes , which sorta bothers me being used to 3000. guess the full synthetic makes the higher milage . im sure youll find your dream bus👍

MattsRadShow that's the split window one, if it has crumple zones it is held in by the same 4 bolts plus the ones on the moustache bar. They are not unreliable, what breaks them is people don't maintain them and flog them to death, remember at a constant 3250 rpm people use these engines in aircraft. Use Tue gearbox and don't run it at full throttle for too long.
@Parknest
@Parknest 6 жыл бұрын
Know exactly what you want and research the hell out of it. You've found a good place there for advice and help. The splitties (the busses with the 2 piece windscreens) are worth serious money (even the restoration projects) so a bay window or even the later T3 (also known as the T25 here in the UK) may be more within your reach. A structurally sound (rust free) bus would be the best place for you to start and will put you ahead as John and others in the comments have said. The mechanicals are easy by comparison. Check out Mustie1's channel. He has plenty of VW content. Wheeler Dealers have done a few VWs so it might be worth seeking out the relevant episodes. dude what's going on? you never bought a bus. I bet after talking to these dudes you realized how much work it actually is. VWs aren't for the faint at heart. Dude I can't believe that guy bought that bus for $400. That is insane!!! To be fair you can probably get a bay window bus for pretty cheap. They are still a lot of them out there and still affordable, but it will be rusty unless you get one from the southwest, but you will pay more for it. don't be scared, live the dream.

Good luck Matt. This was a marvelous video. My dream is to take my family across the country in my 1966 splitty I have named Lisbeth in honor of Miss Salander in the Girl with the Dragon tattoo Noomi Rapace film series. Depsite all my bus has endured whether it be neglect or outright abuse over the past 52 years in the end she will be victorious, she will prevail just like her namesake. In any case, she is now getting a complete mk4 electrical harness with fully functioning ABS and cruise control, intermittent wipers, ALH TDI, Porsche 951 narrowed rear torsion beam suspension and 19x11" Carrera turbo Lobster Claw wheels. Just imagine my delight when I fit with little room to spare my 315/25/19 Toyo Proxes rear tire last week. I hope to have the torque, reliability and efficient power of this little beast flowing through the upside down Audi A4 transmission by the end of the month. Of course both lower rockers are rotted out but if time allows they will be changed before our departure later this early summer. The adventures that await us along with our backup 1.8T mk4 wagon and TDI sedan will be the greatest. I may very well tow along one of these 3,400 lb. monsters WITH Lisbeth herself, now that will be a sight to behold. Best of luck to you mister.

Matt, two ways, go find the most solid bus you can, and just start....or go look for a solid 1976-1979 westy. My 78 is a much better riding bus than my 71. 76 is 2 Liter and taller transmission gears....if you have the green, get a camper...you could do a transporter with a Z bed in later...just start...

Thanks for sharing. I've had 2 Bugs and 3 Busses back in the previous Century. LOL. I am looking forward to having a bus again. But living in Arizona it's of necessity going to need A/C. Aftermarket or stock, I'm sure that 's the way to go. One of my busses had the pancake engine and was bored and stroked so while cruising uphill in the Sierra's it would hit 80 while passing all of the NEW VW busses along the way. I'm not "confabulating " on that. I got a lot of quizzical looks from people. Of course, in hind-sight I should have kept that instead of selling when I got stationed in the Air Force on the right Coast. I am in definitely in the market for one if it has MINIMAL rust. Dan

I owned two Bugs, a 1964 Baja Bug in 1978 and a 1967 Cal Bug in 1987. They both had 1600cc motors. I loved my Baja Bug. It was a super sweet street Baja, not an over the top, off road rail car. It was more of a hybrid street and trail set up. It was a nice metallic root beer brown with a copper colored engine cage and wheels. It was one of those builds where the owner and builder didn't want to sell it, unless the buyer was in love with it. I was crushed when a dumb blonde high school girl made a blind left turn in traffic and wrecked it. Even though I only played with it off road in a wash (dry creek bed) a few times, I loved that little thing to death. It made the most incredible mechanized noise that made you feel instantly connected to it, like it was a part of you. It was raised upand the wheels were towed in, which made it a hand full to drive as it danced all over the road at freeway speeds in windy days. But, God, I loved the way it sounded and smelled. People love to bash on the Mazda Miata, but auto journalists love them to death. They claim that even though Miatas aren't incredibly fast, they feel fast and they are super fun to drive. That's exactly what it's like to drive a bug. You could swear that you must be going faster than you are, because driving slow couldn't possibly be that much fun.

Dude you have so much ambition, I hope if you haven't bought one yet that you just go out and hunt one down! I'm sure you can find a cheap one to fix and turn into your own. My wife and I started our first year of marriage in a Vanagon Westy and I'll never forget how hard it was dropping the engine in that AutoZone parking lot and on the side of the road fixing it. Hard times, but since then we picked up three busses and another Vanagon. We've never spent more than $2,000 on any given one, it was just a matter of driving around till we found a few and knocking on the owner's doors and asking to just check them out. We've pulled them from fields, out of sheds, and all but one have come with motors that didn't need more than a good clean and fuel pump/filters/regular maintenance items. Dude... if you ever swing by Utah man let us know and we'll go find you a bus. Message me on IG when you're down @joeandmadee Seriously, hit us up Matt! I'd love to see what content you could create on the road in an old bus. Cheers, and thanks for the video, super rad indeed!

The dream begins when you rush home after speaking to these guys, dive in the shower - and never return. The dream begins when you discover the right people to look after your air-cooled VW. It's a tough journey, unless you know how to restore stuff yourself. That challenge never ends. A mechanic who needs a mechanic to do a compression test is not a mechanic. Lesson No.1...

We never had a bus, but we had Bugs, I wound up with our second one as my first car. I HATED that thing. LOL You had to drive down the road wrapped in a blanket and scrape the inside of the wind shield so you could see in the winter. I didn't have enough sense to replace the hoses so the defrost worked. The heater shut-off cables were broke so it kept it warm in the summer in case you felt a little chilly in August. I would like to have one now but never as a primary. I ruined the engine on that car twice. Cost $500 to rebuild it. If I had one now, I would be more responsible with it. But I was young and dumb then. I hope I'm not old and dumb. :D

Hey Matt, There are deals to be found. The late bays like the green westfalias in your video are much less than an older version. Start saving these things are going up in value daily. To find a deal you have to search like crazy. I currently own 3 buses and I love them. They are slow, loud, and just awesome. I get more thumbs up and smiles even though I'm holding up traffic. Good luck and your video is great.

My dad had a VW bus to haul around 4 kids and a wife back in the early 70's. I do remember one long stay on the roadside. As an engineer, running control cables from the front to the back is a bad idea. I saw a video where the VW bus had solar panels and an electric motor. In 2030, most countries will have banned gas engines for passenger vehicles. By 2050, Miami will be knee deep in water. Something to think about, do you want to be an expert in clean energy or air-cooled gas engines? 23:00 It is not privelege and entitlement, it is good engineering that the customer demands. No, they don't want to be mechanics unless they chose that career.

Hey Matt, I live in England, and I own a Vw t4 bus, whilst it doesn't have the looks or the charm of the bays and splittys , it is still awesome , has a pop top and proper interior conversion by a company called 'bilbos' myself and my family have had some great adventures in her already and We are hoping to do a road trip to Europe next year . We have also been to a couple of VW festivals in her, where the vibe is great . You should defo get a vw bus. All the best .

Hey are you allowed to import any VW busses from Mexico / South America? They were built up until about 5 years ago there. I know its not the cheapest but may not have the rust you have here and parts are everywhere down there. I think once a car is 20+ years old you can import them from overseas and use them here? Is that right or not?

not sure why the perception is they break down alot. I drive a 1970 bug everyday. With proper maintenance and a few spare parts, this should not be the case.

Did you ever get a bus? They're fun, and the market is getting soft so you should be able to find a pretty sweet deal on one. If you're still looking, please don't buy a field find, spend the cash and get one that runs, drives, and looks decent. You can always resell it and get most of your money back, if not more than you bought it for. If you love it, then find a bus to build.
