Volkswagen Bus,
VW Buses everywhere!
Is this heaven? No, it's the 31st Annual Bug-In Classic Car Show in Minneapolis.
Twin Cities VW Club 2017 Bug-In 31st Annual Event.
I've come here to continue my dream of one day owning and restoring a VW Bus. What is so exciting about Restoring a VW Bus. I don't know. I just feel the need, the need for slow speed. So I have come to look at some of the most beautiful Volkswagen Buses and Bugs I have ever seen.
I hope you enjoy looking at all of the VW Buses, and Bugs, and you might even spot a love bug in here somewhere.
There's some seriously beautiful buses in this episode.
The Dream Continues!

I'm 69 years old. Many years ago I owned a '71 VW camper. It was slow, no A/C and required a lot of TLC. But I went over most of North America in that thing. Of all the vehicles I've ever owned (and I've owned plenty) that VW camper van is my favorite. Good luck with your quest.

I drove a 74 Westfalia in the 90s and I notice they all have detail differences. Some with rotating seats, with and without headrests. Others with different sinks, fridge and storage arrangements. Some even with gas stoves. My camper had no headrests or stove and I removed the icebox console for added space and just brought a portable cooler. They are all so unique and individual. One thing they all have in common though is very efficient use of space. For ten years I travelled across the country and enjoyed many great camping trips in this old girl, but it all came to an end when rust and rot got to the chassis and the front wheel sunk into the frame.

I have a 79' & it was once a dream of mine as well that I turned into a reality 2 years ago. A big piece of advice right now is to buy one if you want one. As the value continues to climb they will just continue to become more rare to find and expensive. Look at it as an investment. Not only could I make money from mine at this moment, I get to meet so many people that have a story about a VW and I get so many people that want pictures and just want to BS! It's a whole lifestyle that revolves around it. Just do it! You won't regret it!

14:06 Woooooo, complete flashback for me right there. Those very same crochet style curtains were in my grandpa's camper that we took cross country. Shocked at how EXACT the color is on those cause they clearly look hand made!

In ‘71, on my way home from the service I bought a white ‘65 step thru bus for $750 and loved the simplicity of it but it was slow. I had no idea how to take care of it and let it go in 76. In ‘81 married my wife and I bought a bay window. It was still air cooled and slow, took way more maintenance than a domestic van and was three times more noisy. I’m currently having an ‘84 Westy built and very much looking forward to doing a bit of camping in my old age. All this aside, from what I see on line the ONLY VW van that is reasonably reliable is the Eurovan. Starting in 2001 I think they are water cooled and have adequate power to keep up with interstate traffic. They are reasonably quiet and much more reliable than the T2.5 and T3 versions. My ‘84 is water cooled so I am hoping for the best. Good luck on your quest. Let us know how the search goes. The geen bay window was pretty cool

I have this dream too. I nearly realised it back in 1990, I managed to get a 1977 8 seat microbus, 2.0 automatic. It needed work, but was a great place to start. Sadly, my parents split up, and the house had to be sold, so there was nowhere to park it off e street, so I was forced to sell it. It would be worth 20 times what I paid for it now....

IF you compare a "newer" (60's-70's) bug side by side with an early 50's bug, the curves were so much more in the early years. They even looked chopped. I think they have more class than the later models.

Very nice video. Thanks. I have owned a few buses. 1965, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1971. Best to get the best one you can afford. Restoration costs way more money then you will ever get out of it. Splitties are the most desired and the most expensive. Bay windows 1968 to 71 have the bug engine and are simpler. Past 71 they have the porche engine and are more complicated. Find local club and meet the guys.

I was you, 34 years ago, when I as 20. I bought a 1969 and drove it for 11 years, then I sold it and immediately bought a 1979, which I think is rather the best of all worlds, a 2 liter engine, but still rounded corners. My advice is go on the Samba.com, go on FullMoonBusClub.com, go on other bus websites and start camping with these people, they will help you find what you want! Don't worry that it's not perfect, just that it starts, runs and stops. The rest you can do yourself and get lots of help from your vw buddies. Just GET ONE and get going!

@Hieu TV Exactly what I did 3 years ago! I knew I wanted one and just went for it. I was sick in my stomach though for the first day or 2 thinking I was way in over my head. Now, 3 years later from working on it myself, I can handle almost anything that it may need & I understand how the mechanics work - I still have to ask for help sometimes though. I love it & hope my kids can take my bus over when I'm gone.

in '74' I bought a ex Canadian LHD '64 split window from a Maori Family. BIG mistake. Never been on the beach, except for every weekend to collect shellfish. When I ripped the decrepit interior out The sand poured out of everywhere, especially the rusted gap between the floor and the walls and the outriggers that were well, not connected to anything. First engine service and the bits of pistons and valves came out of the sump. Yeah they dropped a valve. So they replaced a piston, put a new valve in the cracked head and bunged it all together.. And the dealer forgot to put oil in the gear box. Took a week to make a noise. Sorry no warranty. Shit them. So it got totally stripped to bare metal. The big 2in deep ding in the right rear guard and side got fixed, new floor, new outriggers, new springs, gearbox repaired, 4 reverse and 1 forward.. !!! get the diff on the correct side guys! New springs and shocks, new sills, new battery boxes (dual 90Ahr deep cycle). 1600 barrels pistons, dual port, balanced, blueprinted, electronic ignition, an alternator on a home made frame beside the generator (not used), change all the electrics to 12V, rewind the windscreen motor for 12V dual speed. Sanding painting, burnt orange and white lacquer, 6 coats clear, new upholstery, carpet, one piece white fibreglass ceiling sprung in place. Camper interior in real Mahogany.. Synthetic fur. TV B&W 12in in those days. Cooker, Porta-pottie,. Dyno Test,, 55HP at the wheels SHOCK.. Well 17in off road tyres and wheel spin the 2 ton van in first gear easy. And off round NZ 3x in 3 years. From Bluff to Cape Rianga in 3 days at average 70Mph. ( the limit was 50).. sold it to move to australia. Really miss it so much. LHD on RHD roads.. Good actually

Get a baywindow, they're great as there's a lot of support for them and they're cheaper than split windows, cheap enough that you don't have to worry modifying them, I'm putting Porsche brakes and wheels on mine with a Subaru engine and transmission along with a rag top and Metallic dark red paint work, I've had a beetle and that was an amazing car aswell

Nice video Matt! I'm close to making it happen - I've been drooling over the early split windshield/safari window buses but they are out of my league moneywise ... I've been looking at some 70's buses ... yesterday 8/5 I found 2 VW buses here relatively local here in Ohio ... one was a 73 VW bus ... I texted the owner - he decided that he wasn't going to sell ... then a 2nd one came across the FaceBook Marketplace ... this one is a 1979 Bay Window bus - the seller is going on vacation and I can't get to see it inperson for over a week ... I made an offer - that was accepted on condition I'm comfortable with the ride, mechanical makeup of the bus etc. ... I'm excited !!! it will be a project for sure but if the mechanics & electronics of the bus are good it will be a great find & deal for $6K ... I'm pumped to learn the inside/outsides of this 79 VW bus ... already dreaming about the exterior and interior restores ...

I vote for the '74 Westy. (I have one, BTW). It has the extra wide fold-out bed. The '75 is pretty much the same. And I once had a '77, which had the benefit of using a fuel injected engine that had hydraulic valve lifters. That means not having to adjust the valves, so engine maintenance was simply changing the oil, and spark plugs now and then.

Some advice I would have for you is to buy a bus that you want. Don't settle for a bay window if you really want a split window and earlier the better. Earlier busses are easier to work on. How many different busses showed up? If you only see about 15 it wouldn't be worth it but 40 to 50 could be a lot of contacts.

word to the wise,,,I love air cooled. Had several through the decades. If I were thinking about a bus,,, I would go newer air cooled , just for the look of the body , and use Subaru power. Freeway speeds and a heater.

Heater. Aw, that would take all the fun out of bundling up, head to toe in wool, and driving through the winter months.

Hey Matt, awesome videos you have posted here! You should definitely check out the www.thesamba.com. You can find almost all the info you need on every make and model of Volkswagen and especially the buses. They have classifieds that sell all vw's everywhere, not mention parts and manuals, plus you'll meet tons of people there that will help you with any questions you have! Hope you find a bus soon man! Good road! :)

No problem Matt! You can find me on there most days, lol. My username is kingofpirates83. I've owned nine VW's and worked on them for 20 years. Feel free to ask any questions and if I don't have the answer, chances are I know somebody that does lol!

Any time dude. What budget are you looking to have as far as buying one?
@MattsRadShow
@MattsRadShow 6 жыл бұрын
Robert Chirino im probably going to try amd save up somewhere between 6k and 12k before i purchase one. It would be nice if it was a working bus when i purchase it, and then i can do updates to it along the way after that.

If you want to actually drive it and keep up with traffic and stop safely, get a 78 or 79 bus. Those have the biggest engine VW made with hydraulic lifters so you rarely have to adjust the valves. I say a 79 as well because they have a better head design where the exhaust bolts to the head. 75-78 exhaust is horrible about leaking. Ditch the points and condenser in the distributor and add a pertronix ignitor in it's place and you'll have a good running machine that needs the least maintenance of all the air-cooled vws.

Long ago I had a '71 VW camper. It was the last year of the upright VW engine and the first year for disk brakes. I went over most of North America in that thing. Slow, but I got there. And it was surprisingly good in the snow, probably because of the engine in the back over the drive wheels.

Without knowing your plans, skills, family situation, etc., I would say get a bay-window panel bus. They have the least resale value and you have a blank slate to start your project.

You asked what you should learn/know...well welding and body work unless you have the $$ to paid for a full restore, better to do the work yourself and learn what your VW actually is rather than just buy something that you don't "know", but just my 2 cents.....great video BTW, all the VW's where great hard to choose a favorite.
