Some seeds sold as carpet plants that are actually hygrophila polysperma, you can actually sprinkle on top the water. They'll sink, start to sprout and actually root into the substrate, all under water. Probably not the best results though.

Great video, thanks! I am setting up a 75 gallon tank with a mangrove swamp theme, it will have a large school of Tiger Barbs. Being a cheap guy, I will be using the MadMark aquascaping method ie: collecting dead branches from the woods behind my house. The painting java moss on the "mangrove roots' is the perfect solution for me.

Omg 😂😂😂😂 thank you so much for being real about this. I have just gotten into ponds and fish, aquatic plants and now aquascaping aquariums and I have not felt zen yet lol. I love it and find it interesting, love learning and finagling with things, but my husband swears I am hating every second! 😅I keep insisting it’s part of the process and it’s fine, I just haven’t reached the zen part of aquascaping yet! I just added seiryu stone to an already set up tank 😭 and it was probably four days of my messing with the rocks on the table before I decided on an idea, then another 40 minutes staring at them in the tank and moving them around. Still not 100% sold on the layout but I figure I just need more plants! But I’m glad I’m not alone and a pro like yourself can admit this is frustrating rather than pretending it’s so easy like you see in most videos. Also, can we talk about the aquascaping tweezers??? I am about to toss mine out the window, all they seem to do is hook on to my plants for dear life and bring them back out of the substrate! I’m usually griping and grumbling at the tank asking them “are you serious???” And end up jamming my whole arm in the tank to fix things 😅

Thank you for the video, I’ve done DSM a week ago and it seems like some of my plants are browning. I have light on about 10 hours a day, I water them once in the morning and once at night, I have saran wrap covering the tank, feels humid when I put my hand inside the tank to give them a little air for 5 to 10 minutes. What am I missing that’s causing some of my clumps of plants to start browning?

You can grow HC as long as you can provide it with the popper environment. DIY will work and help. You'll get better results with pressurized Co2 only because you can control it easier. I don't know what 2x 20watt outdoor lamp means. I have to actually look at the specs.

Thanks for the video! Best KZbin video on DSM I think. Question: did you trim the HC right after you flooded the tank? Would you recommend trimming off ALL the leaves? Would that kill them? Thanks again.
@TheWaterBox
@TheWaterBox 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the compliment! :) Yes, it's highly suggested that you do. The HC would have grown pretty decently thick during the emersed period. So you want to give it a good trim so that the root don't rot. If you trim all the leave and just leave the stems intact it will grow back. It would probably grow back even more full if you did that. The problem is it take a lot of time to do that but it won't harm the plants. It would actually be better in the sense it'll grow out more.

Can I add water a few days later after I planted like you?
@TheWaterBox
@TheWaterBox 4 жыл бұрын
This is the dry start method. The whole point is to let the carpet grow and root in 4 to 6 weeks (or more) before flooding. There's no point to waiting only a couple of days and then flooding.

In a comment reply below, you said something about dosing with nutrients to be able to grow plants in a rocky substrate. I have been wondering if you have fish and other inhabitants in your tank, if you still need to fertilize or dose you tank with nutrients for the plants?
@TheWaterBox
@TheWaterBox 3 жыл бұрын
Yeh. you dose the water column regardless if you have live stock in your planted tank. The nutrient won't harm the fish unless you over dose on nitrates (if you even need to does nitrates). Some ferts might have minerals that might not be good for shrimps, for example, but it's usually minute to worry about. If you do, you can get something like Thrive-S that's formulated for shrimp tanks. Again, if you're new to dosing, get an all in one solution. I always suggest Thrive from NilocG.com

What are your thoughts on slowly filling the tank over the course of a week or 2. This would allow the plants to slowly get used to the light levels being reduced by the water rather then just dropping it down immediately. Might also help the roots survive the flooding
@TheWaterBox
@TheWaterBox 3 жыл бұрын
That works as well. Different technique but the concept it that light will reach the carpet more intensely with lower water and grow out faster that way. The carpet growth will level out once the tank is almost full. Just make sure to start with the plant already grown submersed or you'll experience die back in the first 2 or 3 weeks.

Your videos are great. The details and little hint of jokes makes it an enjoyable and informative video. Liked DSM video, I am on my third week of DSM S Repens on 55 gallon. Few of the leaves are turning black, any ideas why ??? I would greatly appreciate your input .

It can be die back but I know my HC did that around the 3 week period and it just popped back and exploded after the 5th week. If it's not totally out of control, you might want to just wait it out. Make sure the lights not too close to the substrate either.

I have only ever gotten green slime algae when I use ADA aquasoil. Never considered it, but is that substrate the culprit?
@TheWaterBox
@TheWaterBox 4 жыл бұрын
Most likely. You'd have to keep on top of it and hit those WC when it looks like it's just spiking too much.

Thank you for sharing this great video and patiently filming it for us 😀👍🏻🌱 Can I do this method in a low- tech tank where I will not be using CO2?
@TheWaterBox
@TheWaterBox 4 жыл бұрын
Probably not. The carpet used here requires high co2 and if you try something like Dwarf Hair Grass that doesn't require high Co2, you need to compensate the time from dry to being flooded to ease them into losing all that co2 to grow. There are other techniques such as filling the tank slowly over weeks but I've never tried that.

do you think it's a shorter time to flood if you grow from seeds? since they don't have to worry about the initial die-back of the roots? (i.e. they're already acclimated to their environment since it's all they've known)?

@TheWaterBox

For the dry start method, it'll be very hard but I have never actually tried is so I can't really say. But the liquid carbon stuff works differently than it does with injecting actual Co2. Might be a good experiment to try.

The Water Box thank you! The carpet is almost gone, i’ve added a pack of amanoshrimps wich ate all the roots above the substrate. When i discovered it was them after my exams i took them out but it already was too late... half of the carpet floating around in wich i took out. Now i have a HUGE algae boom out of the sudden. Could it be by the lack of planting? Other plants seem to consume thereselfs underneath the algae as i give them less light. I’m really on the edge of motivation getting things back together for this tank... :(

Is green slime algae that life-ending for a tank? So sad to hear it all went to waste. Was there no remedy for it? Love your channel, thanks for the GREAT vids.
@TheWaterBox
@TheWaterBox 6 жыл бұрын
No. I could have just blacked it out but at the time I was so busy and just didn't bother with it and the plants died off from its coverage but mainly just from neglect. Nothing went to waste. I learned tons from the process, I got footage to make the video and its nothing I can't just simply do again. It's only wasted when nothing came out of it.

i love your videos, i have two questions... 1. will the bottom die if you just let hc grow? like montecarlo.. 2. i dsm the hc for 7 weeks now without pinning it to the substrate , and its carpeting well and nice .. will it hang loose when i flood it or will there be any problem once i opt to flood it? TIA master :)
@TheWaterBox
@TheWaterBox 4 жыл бұрын
1. Yes, for any carpeting plant, the lower portions can die. Thus why we trim... or mow the lawn. ;) 2. HC DSMed for 7 week should have the roots grown into the substrate by now. You should be fine. :)
