FYI. Front sprockets are known for backing off on the DRZ. Most of us either use blue loktite or i personally torque it to 103. Has served me well for almost 50,000 miles now. Never had one come loose on me. I usually run 15/41 on my S model for most overall use. Idles down the freeway. Current gears are 14/44. Wheelie in 3rd fairly easy. Yoshimura RS2, hot cams and FCR 39mm pumper. Still rubs like new with almost 50,000 miles on her.

It would be so cool if someone built a rear hub with a sun gear setup for an overdrive similar to some of the old Honda trail bikes. There is a patent on it, but to my knowledge it's never been produced. It would be awesome for bikes like the DRZ and my plated XR 650R to be able to effectively be change the sprocket ratios with the turn of a knob on the hub and go from a good trail ratio to a good highway ratio.

Wouldn’t need to be a rear hub. Just change the 5th gear ratio. So 1-4 would still be torquey asf and then 5th gear would be your “overdrive”. Just a super tall 5th gear

Also, could y’all do a 300 Dual Sport Shoot out, like Honda’s new CRF 300 and Kawasaki KLX300. I mean 300 is kinda a 2021 thing for these brands and I’m just curious if it is just hype or is it a step up from the 250s

The 350 versions will be out after a few years then the 300 will be not as desirable. Maybe looking at a very reliable 34hp. Who wants the 250 version now with 22-23 hp. I see literally no downside to the 300 over the 250.

Idk about the CRF but the KLX is virtually identical components, with a negligible increase in power. The only real selling point is fuel injection so you don't have to deal with the headaches of carbs. If you're somewhere relatively flat, warm, and can ride year round id pick up a used 250. If plan to ride on days where you will have real cold starts, significant elevation changes, or if it'll be sitting through the winter than you might find the fuel injection to be worth the extra money.
@autismion
@autismion 3 жыл бұрын
250s are kinda anemic on the highway. And carbed bikes will run a bit rich on higher altitudes, but none of the guys with carbed KTM 450s/500s I ride with even notice a difference going from 2000ft to 8000ft with the same carb setting. The suspension on those 300/250 dual sports really leaves something to be desired for harder offroad riding, but fine for learning. I could get my suspension revalved but it still wouldn't be as good as an actual enduro bike from the last 15 years

This is the same for a DRZ400E 14 47 is a more trail, 55 mph highway setup to get offroad; DRZ400S 15 44 is what you're looking for with a jet kit and 3x3 mod. I don't ride my DRZ400S on the highway, I'll be changing mine out for the 14 47 since most my riding is 55-65 when on road. There is a cheap chinesium FCR39 slant floating around, it'll provide additional torque but ruin your fuel economy (160 48 jets work well). Compromises and decisions need to be made.
@DoctorMotorcycle
@DoctorMotorcycle 3 жыл бұрын
Never liked shorter sprocket setups, I can't stand shifting all the time, the lower cruising speed capability on the highway, throws the speedo off in some cases etc. It always made more sense to me to just do motor work to add more power. Most of the time when you do that, if you did it right, you'll have to INCREASE the gearing, not decrease it. For $150 I'd buy a china copy FCR39 carb or find a Genuine that needs a rebuild, do the 3x3 mod, and boom, there's your snap. If I was on a shoestring budget I'd also pull off the top end, yank out the base gasket (use loctite 510 in place of a base gasket), port the head, and put it back together with new rings and a new headgasket, for a whopping $60 or so more, which would free up another 2-3HP. If you don't degree the cams you'll have a mid-top end screamer, degree them a few degrees advanced you'll have a stump puller for the trails.

But think of it this way: If all you really do is rip around suburban and rural areas, and never actually need to ride on roads with a speed limit of over 55mph, then this is actually a very solid mod because you get an 18.5% (!!!!!) increase in torque/acceleration and the engine will run much stronger at in-town speeds, and you can still go fast enough for the average county roads, and you don’t have to worry about getting speeding tickets.

An intelligent engineering approach would have involved comparing sprocket ratio proposed to original ratio to calculate percent increase. The same percentage can be used to understand impact on engine rpm at a given speed as it will need to increase the same amount. There is no free lunch. If you are changing ratios by more than 5% from how engineers designed it you are probably sacrificing too much of one thing for another. The real issue here is Suzuki is too cheap to redesign the DRZ with EFI and 6 speed transmission. Both of those things would make a huge improvement with fewer compromises.
