My mother went to Ireland and saw The Dubliners when I was in my teen years; I am 74 now. As luck or fate would have it, she purchased an album for me, "Live at Albert Hall." I could not understand anything they were singing. What difficult English! Then, I did not understand the meaning of the songs. I was determined to understand their words and music. There was no internet, just the library. I was hooked and have been ever since. The passing of the members was like losing a long-time friend, so sad. KZbin is a fantastic place to bring back and see them perform.

I was lucky enough to meet the boys backstage after their 50 years anniversary concert in January 2012 in Christ Church Cathedral for a few short interviews. I partuclarly remember talking to Barney and joking about their plans for the 60 years anniversary and Barney very reflectively responded "We take it slow, we're at an age you don't know if you're still there the next year". It still gives me shivers considering what happened a few weeks later.

What's the first song called?
@garyjames86678 жыл бұрын
It's 'The Black Velvet Band'. It's a bit of a standard. There's a great version done by an Australian bush band called Cobbers, albeit back in the 1970's. I guess the references to Australia (Van Diemen's Land = Tasmania) got it onto their playlist. You can hear it at www.cobbersbushband.com/ and even download the album, track by track, by going through the Record Sales/All for Me Grog link. Some other great songs there too, a lot about shearing.
