There's something of an irony here as this is actually a C17 English 'alehouse ballad' warning of the dangers of strong drink. The Dubliners learnt this version either from Norfolk traditional singer Sam Larner or more likely from English singer Louis Killen in Newcastle in 1960 (Luke Kelly frequented his folk club). They recorded it in 1963 released it as a single and had a big chart hit in 1964. Prior to this the song was virtually unknown in Ireland and now everyone thinks it is a traditional Irish drinking song. But it ain't.
@pedrorameses43644 ай бұрын
Amazing education my friend I come from Northern Ireland and never knew this
@Wotsitorlabart4 ай бұрын
@@pedrorameses4364 I have to say as an Englishman this surprised me too! Louis Killen has said that Luke Kelly often frequented the Bridge folk club in Newcastle when he was working in England during the very early 1960's and would write down the lyrics of the songs he heard. A 1950's folksong survey by the BBC of traditional singers in Ireland only found two or three versions of 'Wild Rover' (at least one in the North if memory serves me welll). Luke returned to Ireland recorded the (musically tweaked - eg the bit where everone claps four times in the chorus) song with the Dubliners - and the rest is history. But the origins of the song go back to Thomas Lanfiere's 'The Good Fellow's Resolution, or The Bad Husband's Return from His Folly' - printed in 1678-80. The chorus goes; 'For now I will lay up my money in store And I never will play the bad husband no more'. Not playing the Wild Rover came later.

Lyrics: Verse 1 (Paddy Reilly) I've been a wild rover for many's a year. I spent all my money on whiskey and beer. Now I'm returning with gold in great store. And I never will play the wild rover no more. Chorus (All) And it's no nay never. No nay never no more. Will I play the wild rover. No never no more. Verse 2 (Ronnie Drew) I went into an alehouse I used to frequent. And I told the landlady, my money was spent. I asked her credit, she answered me nay. "Such a custom as yours I can have any day." Chorus (All) And it's no nay never. No nay never no more. Will I play the wild rover. No never no more. Verse 3 (Sean Cannon) I took out of my pockets, ten sovereigns bright. And the landlady's eyes opened wide with delight. She said, "I have whiskeys and wines of the best. And the words that you told me were only in jest." Chorus (All) And it's no nay never. No nay never no more. Will I play the wild rover. No never no more. Verse 4 (Jim McCann) I'll go home to my parents, confess what I've done. I'll ask them to pardon their prodigal son. If the caress me as oft times before. The I never will play the wild rover no more. Chorus (All) And it's no nay never. No nay never no more. Will I play the wild rover. No never no more.
