I always have that same problem with the braided brake lines. You can't twist them, and the manufacturers always seem to make them so that the angle between the two banjo fittings is wrong, so you end up with a strangely twisted brake line. I like your advice to put fasteners back in where they normally go (I've done this for years). I also keep a box of sandwich-sized ziploc bags and a sharpie handy - when I'm taking apart something with a lot of fasteners - or taking apart something big with a lot of separate parts (each with their own fasteners), I will put the fasteners for each item in a ziploc bag, seal it, write what it's for on the bag with the marker, and put the bag WITH the item I took off. That way you don't mix up fasteners, and you don't forget any. Lastly, excellent description of the "automatic torque wrench" we develop by feel after many years of wrenching. I still torque many critical things - axle nuts, brake caliper fasteners, and other things I really don't want to have come loose while riding. And of course, things like nuts holding tapered bearings, etc. I empathize with you trying to do stuff on video. I do this too, making videos and tutorials for fixing Goldwings, and when I have to demonstrate and explain what I'm doing, instead of just DOING it, it usually takes three times as long!

not hard to come by, you can get an air cooled SS for cheap, the 8 valvers don't look good un dressed, I've got an 916 ST4 2001, and the fairings cover the mish mosh underneath, personally I'd be looking 80's , air cooled 2 valve , with a running engine, or even an ST3 from the 90's would be a good place to start.. The Treblanche era. 999 era your looking for in the early 2000's was a low point for the bikes looks wise.. an early monster is a good place to start.. now, if you can get a hold of a n old bevel drive, round case...or square, you can put modern frame and stuff around it, and have a great engine sound and looks..

The tip about gloves to avoid skin contact with harsh chemicals is important - I have a couple friends that spent years elbow deep in acetones, thinners, gas etc and almost didn’t survive their battles with environment induced non-Hodgkin lymphoma. It’s a tough cancer to fight and survive but a somewhat easy one to avoid.

My understanding is the reason Ducati did the whole spring-loaded kick-stand thing is to avoid having to design a system to stop you being able to put the motorcycle in gear and ride off with the stand down. On one hand it's a simple and elegant solution, on the other it's deeply flawed... Most seem to be modified (grinding off a tab I believe) to stay down. 1- There's an idiot light on the dash telling you the stand is down, 2- A Ducati isn't really a beginner bike and an experienced rider is unlikely to leave the stand down... The tl;dr is: The stand thing is "character"... ;-)

Many times precise torque specs are more for repeatability and consistency of multi bolt systems than mechanical soundness. If the final torque on your headbolts is supposed to be 105 ft/lbs, it doesn't matter so much that you reach precisely 105, but it's super important that all the bolts were tightened in the correct sequence and percentage of final torque. The structure will probably be fine if the final number is between 100 and 120 ft/lbs, but it will NOT be fine if half of the bolts are 100 and the other half are 120. Trusting your internal torque wrench is fine for non-interdependent systems, but if you have multiple bolts holding a sealing face or other shared force interface, you need to use a torque wrench and pick a number, even if that number is pulled out of your butt based on the first fastener feeling "right". Every time you have to reposition yourself to move to the next bolt, your feel of tight enough is going to be slightly different.

Ducati maintenance is over rated. 2 valve air cooled or water cooled. Stupid easy to take care of. 3 valve still easy. 4 valve just know you might be working on it for a little bit. Ducati’s are my weakness. Nothing like the sound of a 90 degree V twin. Oh and god bless Lucas.😁

Too funny. As I watch you struggle getting the front wheel and tire positioned on the Ducati, I kind of did the same thing. Since I do not have a motorcycle, or in my case a ATV lift, I had to improvise as well. An engine hoist was not an option and neither was a ATV lift or jack stands since I was installing a plow mount on the underside of my Honda 420 Rancher. So I was watching some YT vids and noticed one vid where a guy was using a hitch mounted truck crane (similar to an engine hoist). I ordered it from Amazon, put it together and it worked like a charm holding the ATV at a 50 or so degree angle enough for me to install the plow mount. So, I feel your pain. Sometimes we have to use our noggin to get the job done. Cheers!

I like the idea of using a cherry picker to lift you motorcycle. I need to remember when I work on mine. I ‘engineered’ a stand out of wood and two floor jacks when I did my tires again.

Engine crane was a great idea! I used my deck by extending a 2x4 out over the bike and some ratchet straps with soft ties when I did my front tire.

Had a 748R with an auto-kickstand. I always share my toys, and had more than 1 person lay the bike down because of the stand, despite me telling them. Some people, I swear hahaha

Just a quick tip from someone who's learned the hard way, when you're working on a motorcycle that sitting on the side stand, or in your case lowering it from a cherry picker back down onto the ground on to the side stand, use a bungee cord to hold the side stand down. It's a good idea even if you're just working on something while the bike is sitting on the ground. That way you don't accidentally roll it to the point the kickstand folds up. And yeah, it should be in gear so it doesn't go anywhere, but sometimes you get in a hurry and forget. That's when it bites you in the ass.

Good morning Casey. I just inherited an old Honda 750 V-twin water-cooled. I've just started going over the bike, cleaning it up and doing an initial checklist of what I visually see that will need attention. Right now, the most obvious issue I see is that the front forks seals have totally failed and the outside of the forks, fender, both front brake calipers are saturated in oil. My goal is to try to do as much DIY repair as possible. Would you be so kind as to point me to any online resources regarding the front forks? If it's ok with you, may I pick your brain, (given you have any brains left to pick by the time I get started? LOL) for advice? I promise to not inundate you with every little matter I encounter. Perhaps you may consider using it with your students as an online AMA forum to test their skills and knowledge on occasion?

Your suggestion that instead of buying a $60 torque wrench, you learn to "feel" the tension is reckless and dangerous. On a motorcycle you are most often tightening steel bolts into aluminum. A few ftlbs over and youve stripped a fitting. Most torque specs or the service manual are searchable on the net. I hope everyone ignores your commentary. I liked the idea of 900r project, but im unsubscribing because you are dangerous.
