He also discusses the difficult questions of how we can "see" grace at work on nature, and whether certainty of being in the grace of God is possible. Before saying "gratia perficit naturam," the tradition says "gratia praesupponit naturam." Why hate the phrase "grace builds on (and perfects) nature," if nature has its own intrinsic being and grace is a qualitative perfection of nature?
