Prior to the 1998 wild card round between the New England Patriots and the Jacksonville Jaguars, Jaguars running back Tavian Banks got into a car accident. He got suspended by head coach Tom Coughlin as a result. Seriously. Safe to say, outrage ensued

Some of Coughlin's rules didn't really make sense. I understand fining people who don't arrive at meetings on time due to their own negligence, but fining Banks and sitting him down for the playoff game discussed here was petty. Coughlin doesn't seem to understand nuance very well.

this is why he was put out of the nfl a few yrs ago, because he kept doing dumb rules and pretty much killed the jags for a few yrs with players leaving, forcing trades, and just not wanting to sign there and that was when he was an exec
@marcus813
@marcus813 Жыл бұрын
@@alejbr4 That foolishness he did as Jaguars suit in his last stint there got him in some mess with the PA, which ultimately cost him his job that time. The PA's advisory about signing with the Jags sealed Coughlin's fate. It's as if he though the CBA didn't apply to him.

You're right . I lived in Jacksonville briefly if they didn't have the car crash they would've made the meeting. Once they crossed the main street bridge the facility was a hop skip and a jump. Coughlins justification was poor on this one.

This story taught me one thing, Tom Coughlin has zero compassion as a person. We all remember how he once withheld food for an overweight player because he was overweight. Absolutely sickening. Then he allowed his kicker to beat his wife under his watch and did nothing till it came to light.

You know, I could never put my finger on what it was, but something about Coughlin has always rubbed me the wrong way. I have no issue with giving the man his flowers for turning the Jags and Giants around during his respective tenures with both teams, but he just gave off this vibe that made me hate him with a passion. I think the kids still call it the "douche chills." A story like this makes a good case in point. In this incident, Coughlin just crossed that thin line between being a hard ass and just being an ass. If there was evidence that the accident was Banks's fault, then yes, suspend him, but there was none. What was Coughlin trying to accomplish here? It makes no sense.

This occurred the same day as The Catch II where Terrell Owens caught the game-winning TD from Steve Young, beating the Packers, even though Jerry Rice fumbled a few seconds prior to the catch, which the Packers recovered; however, the refs ruled Rice down and there was no instant replay at the time.

I think in McCardell's defense is that he might have been afraid to lodge a former complaint against Coughlin because he could get into trouble himself with him knowing how strict he is. The incidences involving Coughlin whether he was the HC of the Jaguars or the head of the front office the guy's is an asshole end of story.

It must’ve been the Omni hotel. That was really the ONLY hotel on the north bank on the early 90s until the Adams Mark aka Hyatt opened. The Hilton was on the south bank of the river so it couldn’t have been the Hilton. Side note: you can not get to downtown from EVERY hotel in the city in that time frame bro. What in the world are talking about 😂😂 do you realize how big Jacksonville is? there are hotels 20-25 minutes from the core of the city.

Coughlin must have known details that didn't come out. Something doesn't add up. They crash, flipping a car 4 times, but we're at the meeting 30 minutes late. Did they run and not wait for the cops? Was 1 of them impaired? Did they make it up as an excuse for being late? Because there's no way you can crash like that, and end up anywhere 30-40 minutes later like nothing happened.

I think where they were coming from is important. If that somehow breaks a team rule, or would be a bad look, its justified. For example, if they were coming back from a strip club and were late cause of an accident makes some sense. That being said we dont know where they were before. Its just to many unknowns
