This was a good video to call out some BS. Oh, and for what it’s worth, the proper way to say the rice thing is “two (or more) kinds of rice.” That’s because the word itself refers to a thing that is usually always in multiples. Most people do not deal with a (grain of) rice, so it’s assumed the single word describes a measurement of multiple grains. Hope that makes sense. And yes, I was an English major, and I am taking the opportunity to nerd out a bit. Thanks for indulging me. 😊

Personally, I eat two meals a day - and I definitely eat to the satiation point. I also eat foods that are rich in nutrition, such as fresh fruit and veg, pastured beef, etc. But I'm not afraid of sugary treats - I just eat them in really small portions (like a treat is traditionally enjoyed). I also enjoy colas, but they are 75% watered-down. I am 5'3" and 125 lbs. I don't drink alcohol due to the fact that it almost killed me, but that doesn't mean everybody else has to be afraid of it.

Dr Fung complicates things. This is a better explanation: We do know that eating foods with protein, fat, and fiber together does help slow down digestion which gives a steadier release of blood sugar over a longer period of time which gives you longer term Satiety, or feeling fuller longer, over a longer period of time. Blood sugar spiking and crashing will make you feel starving within a short period of time which drives cravings or feelings of starvation, skipping the feelings of gradual increase of hunger which, which can drive overeating. So Dr Fung is making things complicated in his explanations but the overall concepts are valid. I don’t like the way he teaches that either. Keto is too complicated for most ppl therefore it ends up being a temporary diet which makes ppl feel bad about themselves. Also, eating your “fun” foods every once and while in moderation on occasion is perfectly fine and normal so I agree demonizing certain foods, or in other words moralizing foods, is a disservice to the public and actually drives food obsession and disordered eating patterns. AND a calorie isn’t just a calorie so it does matter the types/quality of foods you’re eating. I guarantee you that eating 2,000 calories of McDonalds burger, fries, and soft drinks are going to affect your body differently (look and feel/energy) than 2,000 calories of let’s say raw, whole food diet as an extreme example. So quality and combination of foods do matter. It’s not just about calories in vs calories out. If it was that easy we still wouldn’t have all these issues.

@@itsgonnabeanaurfromme check out mastering diabetes on you tube. Dr. Neal Barnard is another good one with published research. Basically T2D is caused by insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is caused by a build up of fat in the muscle and liver cells. The symptom of cells being clogged with fat is prolonged high blood glucose. Normal amounts of insulin are not sufficient to cram glucose into a cell that is already occupied by fat. That is why when say, someone trying to lose weight/control T2D with low carb/high fat ingests carbs their sugars spike and stay high, because they are taking in too much dietary fat. Put someone on a lower fat diet, 15%ish Cals from fat, they become able to assimilate the glucose normally because the insulin sensitivity is restored. Hope that makes sense. I'm very surprised by every sentence in your comment, because in my experience, the opposite of everything you said is true. For one, brown rice has slightly MORE calories than white rice. The bran that is left on it contains a bit of extra fat and protein, leading to a slight increase of calories. Also, in terms of price, where I am, 2lbs Brown costs only $0.10 more than 2lbs white rice. In my experience, the difference is very minimal. I realize you may live in an area where this is different, but I don't think everyone would get the same impression about health being expensive from that suggestion.

The thing that annoys me with this is that the doctor's overexplanation misses the point: we have always mixed flavors together not just because they taste good but because they help our bodies digest better! Dipping crusty bread in olive oil/balsamic at Italian restaurants isn't just a gimmick. Chips and salsa isn't just a quirk. Salad dressing isn't just for fun. Our ancestors understood better than we do that acids/spices helped us digest better, but doctors need to figure out how to translate that into the practical, delicious side of food. Because that's what people need to know!
@questioneverything17762 жыл бұрын
Glycemic Index (GI) is not relevant because we typically don’t eat 100 grams of a certain food by itself. Glycemic Load (GL) is the realistic portion someone would actually eat of a food vs the GI. BUT the kicker is that we combine proteins and fats along with carbohydrates when we typically eat so the GI and GL are irrelevant since proteins and fats, along with fiber, affect how quickly a meal is digested and the accompanying rise (fast or slow rise depending upon ratios of macronutrients) in glucose and insulin. The term “Net Carbs” is actually a made up term and is not scientifically validated and diabetics are not taught this, should not be taught this as total carbs do matter.
@greghill1582 жыл бұрын
I think you missed a large part of his argument. He's saying that your body digests less of the starch (i.e. carbs) if you include the vinegar or other acid, which is what causes the lower glycemic response. So while you might eat 200 calories of rice, your body only digests like 150 calories (numbers made up, just an illustration). I don't know if his claims are true or not, but you are arguing the wrong point.

People can be insulin resistant without having preDM, type 2 DM and/or the complex/combination types of DM. Insulin resistance causes large secretion of insulin which can “overshoot” glucose in blood and cause hypoglycemia. This is blood sugar swings and the person appears hypoglycemic, but it’s due to insulin resistance.

It’s not something people need to specifically worry about though if they are trying to lose weight and get more active though unless they are already diabetic. Losing weight in itself improves insulin sensitivity. So does lifting weights and exercise in general. People just need to find a lifestyle they can stick to that helps them lose weight and get active. The insulin sensitivity will take care of itself then. Trying to give people YET ANOTHER thing they have to focus on is overcomplicating things. If a high carb diet helps someone lose weight, I’m sure as hell not going to tell them it’s bad and they need to eat differently. The weight loss from that diet will FAR outweigh any negatives from eating high carb.

Both above are good points. I think it’s important to recognize that one way does not work for everyone. There are fundamentals but then individualized care and approach are needed. Some people have thyroid condition, some disability, some have already had a cardiovascular event and need precautions, etc. Certainly all the nuanced information doesn’t apply to everyone and it can send people down irrelevant rabbit holes and give them overwhelm, but for others it can be life changing. “Is this something you need to worry about?” I mean, maybe. Metabolic syndrome is becoming more and more prevalent in the US. Overproducing insulin is detrimental to our health and leads to type 2 diabetes in the long term in addition to several other metabolic diseases. Tons of physicians test your fasting glucose and if it’s at an appropriate level, then yay they say you don’t have diabetes. But it’s not exactly that simple. Your body can still be overproducing insulin leading to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes starts with the over production of insulin over time so wanting to maintain a lower insulin level or reduce high glucose spikes (especially if you’re predisposed to metabolic diseases) then it kind of makes sense.

A calorie isn’t just a calorie. You overeat easier on cookies then let’s say vegetables. You’ll be hungrier sooner after cookies then vegetables too. I’m I drinking vinegar from now on with my carbs… no. But I do take in to account that my body reacts differently to different foods.

OMG. Exactly!! I think people go on Keto b/c they want to loss weight quickly. In the long term (if you don't have diabetes) it is not needed. It's so sad to watch someone show their diets on YT and label foods "bad carbs" or "healthy carbs". Balance is key and a keto diet is not sustainable in the long term. I'm always skeptical of doctors that are biased towards a specific diet (keto, vegan, carnivore..etc).

I drank ACV for 3 days then I hated my life so much that i would rather not have amazing skin, lose weight and whatever the other 7 things were... This Dr makes me sad though. My family believes all this bs too - don't eat this after 8 pm, don't do that unless it's a fullmoon and the flowers have sprung and you sacrificed a mature chicken....... Just watch the calories -- thats it. but part of me thinks they want it to to be that complicated so they can say it stays unattainable. Bottom line is counting calories works.

Dr. Fung is mostly Fasting/keto. I love him, lost 20 pounds in 2 months with his advice. I couldn't lose without watching my insulin. I was literally out of hope. I needed the whole story, but at this point I don't even count calories, I fast and reduce my glycemic index. Obviously a calorie deficit is necessary. He's never suggested it wasn't.

You should not be drinking straight apple cider vinegar without diluting it. So bad for your teeth. As are these other acids. Apple cider vinegar has been proven to be good for diabetics because it can moderate blood sugar spikes and I drink it because it helps with my IBS but I would not recommend anyone do it who doesn’t have a problem that they need it for because it is so bad for the teeth. And the thing that helps is the probiotics in organic apple cider vinegar, so taking it any other way than the organic liquid form is going to do jack.
@scrumlass2 жыл бұрын
💯 Came here to find this comment. I’ve taken DILUTED, RAW, ORGANIC Apple cider vinegar for years now, and I love what it’s done for my body. The probiotics alone are 10/10. If people are taking it straight without diluting it the yes, you’re right, don’t do that 😵💫 that’s not good. And I never the kind that is pasteurized, because pasteurization kills off the probiotics.

So, you asked "why should this matter to someone who isn't diabetic" It's because Insulin is the chemical that converts Calories into body fat, not just carbs, but all calories. People think it only effects blood sugar, but it actually has a lot of functions. However, when we eat carbs, our body produces extra insulin to counter those carbs/sugars. All that extra insulin actually causes extra, unnecessary fat gain. Finding tricks/diets that allow us to eat, while also limiting insulin will help prevent the calories that you eat from being stored as fat. It's a form of "hacking" your bodies natural metabolic functions.
@polidesigns31082 жыл бұрын
I agree that this type of stuff doesn't need to be so complicated. I don't have a gall bladder and I actually drink apple cider vinegar diluted in some water before or after a fatty meal or something I know will give me acid reflux/heart burn and it helps me tremendously. I'm not sure if it truly does help me with digestion ect...but it feels like it does. As far as weight loss I'm not too sure about that.
@juliannafelkoski95072 жыл бұрын
I feel like this doctor's video is not actually geared toward the average person who needs to lose a significant amount of weight or an obese person. It's more for people who want to experiment with their nutrition based on the latest science. I'm not saying that mindset is healthy, and for some people, that might be linked to disordered eating. That said, this kind of information comes from studying the "extremes." These studies are based on the extreme ends of a spectrum of scenarios and not even human trials. He's really just sharing information that could be interesting to people who are intrigued by the latest nutrition science. There is no magic pill for weight loss, but science is getting better at understanding the physiology of nutrition in relation to numerous social, environmental, and cultural factors. Research like this does not apply to the day to day very well. I agree that simpler is better for the vast majority of people trying to lose weight. Doctors and scientists aren't great at simplifying though, and it pays overcomplicate things sometimes. I still think it is important to value scientific inquiry and the latest research, but the medical community has an ethical responsibility to push people toward sustainable solutions and accessible methods of weight loss.

Here is the REASON insulin rising is bad...which it DEFINITELY is. One of insulin's primary jobs is to keep your blood sugar within a safe range. Every time you eat something which quickly spikes your blood sugar, insulin is triggered to remove the excess sugar from the blood. Then, the removed sugar is stored as fat. That spike is followed by a quick crash. So, if you do that often, you are going to be spiking and crashing all the time, which makes you fatter and fatter if you eat too much of the kinds of goods which cause spikes and crashes. This leads to insulin resistance, then pre-diabetes, then to full blown diabetes. This can occur even to people who don't get fat. But, most people eventually have weight issues as well. There are essential fats, and essential protein, but there is no such thing as an essential carb. The ketone is actually the brains preferred fuel. But, the body will always use glucose first...TO GET RID OF IT., because too much glucose in the blood can kill you. Whenever insulin is active, the body will not release stored body fat. The food pyramid is and always has been completely backward. The fats the food pyramid have demonized are actually the healthy and essential ones, and these fats do not trigger an insulin response, so they don't cause weight gain, because insulin is one of the two fat storage hormones. Cortisol is the other one, and it is triggered by stress. The fats that the food pyramid recommends, are toxic, and inflammatory. The keto people are NOT wrong as you claim. It is just the opposite. You are young, so this stuff has not really effected you get...but it will in time. Lots of dietary guidelines can work when you are still young. But, over time, they will cause harm, if they work against the body's hormonal system by putting too many of the kind of carbs that turn into glucose in the blood and stress the pancreas too much and eventually wear it completely out.

In the macro biotic diet/ philosophy, eating rice & pickles is recommended. Not because it has any effect on calories . But because pickles stimulate the salivary glands to create more saliva, which helps dissolve the rice in the mouth & convert it into sugar. Also, the Macrobiotic diet recommends chewing everything u eat very well (like 30 times each bite!). So when you put the pickles into the equation, and the thorough chewing of rice… you are maximizing the breakdown of this complex carb. In other words, you are getting the maximum slow burn carbs out each bite of rice. You are nourishing your body & helping it stay full for many hours. Oh, and macrobiotic also preaches the benefits of brown rice. In the nutrition table, Brown rice & whole grains are at the center of everything. They are the most balanced food. So this is where that guy gets his idea from. Eating pickles with rice is a Japanese tradition. Macrobiotic diet was invented by a Japanese doctor. You are right , what he says about calories is none sense. But like you said, he is using factual information and making assumptions & wild conclusions.

John is right. But instead of "in my opinion," you could also point to that autophagy, insulin levels, low carb and fasting has no human studies to back it up. Time restricted eating wondows does not affect weight loss when calories are equal - so insulin as the weight storing hormon could not be proved. The same is true

If your body does not respond well to carbohydrates, adding apple cider vinegar or lemon to the meal will help slowing starch absorption helps you eventually to prevent storing that as fat. CICO is the main thing for weight loss, but not the only thing. I think John is missing the point about how can ACV and lemon juice support in avoiding potential damage to the body for constant glucose spikes.

In terms of information, this is an incredibly poor quality video and here's why: John is demonstrating a complete lack of understanding of what Dr. Fung is trying to convey and why. Everytime he says, "Dr. Fung's biggest thing is," the explanation that follows is in no way accurate. I recommend that people watch Dr. Fung's longer lectures (there are plenty available on KZbin) to understand why Dr. Fung stresses the significance of keeping insulin levels low. Basically, and I'm summarizing hours of lectures here, when the hormone insulin is present, the hormones that cause fat burning are not. That's just how our bodies are designed. This is true regardless of whether or not a person has developed insulin resistance. Nobody is trying to scare anyone. It's just science. Science doesn't care about your feelings. Also, Dr. Fung is able to draw the conclusions that he has drawn by using evidence-based medicine, several peer-reviewed studies, and his observations as a Masters degree holder and a practicing physician. John countering Dr. Fung's well-researched information with "trust me, it doesn't work like that" and "in my opinion" is beyond arrogant and stupid. Please just watch Dr. Fung's lectures for yourselves because this guy doesn't get it... and I imagine people taking acv capsules thinking that it's going to cause them to lose weight and solve all their problems don't get it either.

(doc is really fat phobic and mean af he mad me cry so I was trying to lose 30 pounds before I saw him again) but I have always had stomach lining issues and wasn't even thinking about how it would mess with my health but I started taking a shot of this a day and the 2 stomach ulcers I had as a teenager that were in remission started acting up again and I had to go back to the hospital and put on medication and the BRAT diet so I really couldn't eat anything because of that. It was terrible don't do it. It isn't healthy and if you already have a sensitive stomach it is really going to mess you up.

Well in case anyone's still watching and reading: Keeping your blood sugar levels even instead of spiking up and down helps you stay satied and (to simplify) your brains working. But instead of supplements or anything crazy like that, you can just eat in regular intervals through the day. And yes, this does go against the popular intermittent fasting trend diet.
