33:32 That’s the trick, I gave up on it from page 1! In the Preface, Matt says that the knowing they train layout isn’t that important to the readers so I just didn’t worry about it. I didn’t try hard to understand it, I just understood that when Carl & co. figured stuff out that it was good. Life seems remarkably easy once you ignore anything difficult.

Yessirs! My big take on this series is that even though it’s comedic in its core, it’s actually one of the most profound and thematically resonant fantasy series out there. Sort of like this channel!

One thing I've noticed about DCC that I haven't seen mentioned elsewhere is how natural the character interactions and conversations are. I've never read another book in which teh conversations actually seem like real spoken conversations as opposed to being.. orated? A lot of book dialog I read - especially fantasy - isn't really how people talk with each other. DCC really nails that aspect and I think it's one of the things that make this really go over the top.

I'm glad I wasn't alone in thinking the Iron Tangle was confusing as all hell. I honestly tuned out a lot of that descriptive stuff and just focused on the fun fighting and emotional character moments when they came up

I actually just did exactly what the foreword said. I completely ignored locational markers until they made the weird map at the end. And from the conversation they had, I'm pretty sure I understand it better than Austin and Richard despite not trying.

Ayo, got a shout-out! The map Austin shared in the description is just a prototype based on the notes I took. Rich was actually talking about the notes themselves which are a mile long file where I detailed the routes of the main cast of characters in the book. Just an FYI❤ Edit: Austin added the notes in the file🎉

I feel like I'm a man on an island in that this is my favorite of the three. I think we're really diving deep into these characters, and how they interact, and how the web of the world is working together. I thought how confusing the world works raised the stakes dramatically ESPECIALLY after THAT twist.

Austin here - I dont disagree! I think the first 3 books are so equal in wuality but if I HAD to pick a favorite, book 3 edges them out!

15:42 - 16:16 this quality in books is what I think elevates it high above the trashy litrpg everyone thinks it is (if they haven't read it). I mean there's like Stormlight level of heroics and self sacrifice in these books but in a way they hit harder because that's not the kind of book this should be. Good triumphing over evil in the most unwinnable circumstances is the one thing that will always make me shed a tear, and few scenarios are as unwinnable as the dungeon and few protagonists try to stay good as much as Carl. It's his whole mantra! You will not break me. I've finished the whole series and so excited for book 7

Among the 6 books, it's not bad but it's so complicated that I never an idea of what's really happening. Though the ending is one of my favorites amongst the books so I'm sure where I stand on this book if someone were to ask me.

Just finished the book and completely agree with everything you said. First 2 books were 4/5 territory for me. This was a solid 3.5. The train stuff sucked and the lack of quests was a real bummer too. The best part was the world and character development.

Glurp! Glurp! Just finished book 6 last night and and coming down off my one week DCC binge by watching your videos! Thank you for giving me an outlet for this DCC energy, I'm not sure how I am supposed to jump to another series after this one lol

Yeah I was super confused about the train stuff. I just kinda had to accept what I heard and keep moving on through the action. The next book is pretty interesting. We get more info about what's happening outside the dungeon. I still have 2 more books to read in this series. I'm trying to slow down so I don't have to wait too long for the new one.

I guess I did not find the train system as confusing as everyone else. Do not get me wrong; it is confusing, but as Carl goes through the book and gets clues to the system, I was able to get a vague idea of what was going on. When Mordecai returned and explained the rest(Katia also did a lot to clear some things up), everything clicked in my head, especially the basic layout. Where Carl was in the system was not too important, what was important was for him to figure out the basics and be where he needed to be at the right time. I personally liked this book better than the second one but not as good as the first.

lol, it's the second video from you that I watched today. 2 reviews of books I didn't read yet. I'm feeling a bit judged when you talked about spoilers, so I feel I need to explain myself. Even though I am one loyal viewer that help to stabilize your stats for the algorithm :p DCC is way up my TBR since your first review. Problem : I'm french and I don't read ebooks ('cause I love the feeling of a good old book) neither I do audiobooks (1stly cause I'm not as much invested in the details of the story when I do something else in the same time, and 2ndly because english isn't my native langage so I fear to not get all the nuances). And as you, I prefer to not support Amazon. So... I have to wait for the trad edition that will be out in august in my bookstore ! But I'm so impatient to get it that I want to maintain my hype by seeing if the following books are as still exciting for you. It gets my hype up and helps me evaluate if it is worth it longterm to get invested in the DCC saga. So yes, I watch your spoilers of books I haven't read but that I plan to. But I watch a lot of reviews and by the time I'll read the books... probably not gonna remember a lot :p (here again, it's a secondary effect of the langage barrier, I remember less informations than when I watch a french review, or I just chose to remember your energy/feelings). Well, I should go back to WOT. I recently watched your tierlist of fantasy tropes and Richard talked so much about it that I had to get the Eye of the world (and the original french trad is ... not so good :/ ).
