The Colts do - and they did even under Grigson; and they kept investing. It's just that they have missed on the players that they acquired. Also, part of the problem is Luck's inability to get rid of the ball in a timely fashion. He's obviously a great young QB, but one of his flaws is that he continues to court disaster by holding onto the ball forever. As for the Cardinals, I think Arians' passing scheme would make even the Cowboys' offensive line look porous, because his scheme requires the QB to hold onto the ball forever. Look at how Big Ben's sack numbers declined once Arians left the building. Again, I am not denying that Arians is a great offensive coach. But there are pluses and minuses with his scheme; and the minus is that the QB gets beat up a lot.

This kinda makes sense but with Qb's like Wentz he's just gonna juke that LE and run by him using the LE's own momentum again him. It's the blindside where all the strip fumbles come from, well unless you're Brady in the Super Bowl lol.
@Zlittlepenguin6 жыл бұрын
I feel like if you’re going to take a sack, it’s better to know when it’s coming. If you’re sacked from your blind side, you’re not going to have time to protect the ball and that could lead to more fumbles. I think that was the more important logic behind that whole thing. Free fumbles.
@13EzioAuditore6 жыл бұрын
The Little Penguin I agree, but making a qb turn his body in the pocket and cut off half the field is big too. I wonder if there's some stats that show which side is more effective in pass rush (blind, strong, or up the middle).

@jamesalba8826 жыл бұрын
Arthur Santos he’s not overrating them. If you listen to what he said he explained that the Eagles thrived on getting bargain bin corners that played at a high level because of their scheme. And that was because their safeties make the corners job less important. Ronald Darby and Jalen Mills are not top tier corners. Patrick Robinson was a cast off. They all played good-enough. That’s why Robinson was not a priority re-sign for Philly. They can get an other bargain corner to play that role. They load up on pass rushers and pay quality safeties so that they can pay less for corner, which is probably the most expensive non-QB position in the league right now.

#6: Runningbacks are extremely expendable. Sign old veterans to cheap deals or bring in some second to fifth round rookie. This team never throws money at RBs, and it's no wonder why the best teams are Chiefs, 49ers, Patriots, Eagles (when healthy), and Seahawks. They all have pricey QBs, but the RBs are poorly paid, so it offsets.
@Sentient_Blob4 жыл бұрын
Except Derrick Henry
@mr.sideous23404 жыл бұрын
@@Sentient_Blob Even Henry in a way. He can't pass catch, so he's one dementianal. He also has seen A LOT of carries last season, and if the treand goes up, that could do some major damage to his body, especially with his play style. Henry won't be the same player at 30, and will likely see a lot of regression. RBs usually struggle after a certin point and Henry may not be an exception. The same thing was said about players like Gurley, and Bell. Bell at 28 looks nothing like Bell at 25, and while Gurley may have gotten an unluky injury, those carries took a large enough toll on his body to make him more vulnerable to injury. So in conclusion, even Derrick Henry, in some ways, is still an expendable player. Maybe not right now, but 2-3 years down the line.
@Sentient_Blob4 жыл бұрын
Mr. Sideous Well Bell self destructed his career, and Gurley has joint problems that other players and runningbacks don’t normally have. But yeah rbs do tend to see more regression than others, and I don’t expect the Titans to keep him on a massive contract when he ages

This is an awful lot of praise for making the playoffs 4 times, collecting 3 division titles, and picking up one SB title (as well as three losing seasons) in effectively one decade. And the Eagles are not even among the hottest teams for 2019. Perhaps, some other teams are not quite as stupid as they look. I always say that the Eagles were unusually lucky with their roster decisions in 2017. Almost everything worked out for them. They got Jeffery on a discount for a year (because, surprisingly, teams did not jump on the opportunity to sign him). They had a $15M wide receiver for $10M. Torrey Smith also chipped in, and, after a frustrating couple of years, Agholor also began to produce. That gave them a receiving corps that was almost impossible to defend - especially because they also had one the the premier receiving TEs with Ertz. They also had a powerful RB combo with Blount and Ajayi for a pittance. Veteran signings (like Long) also worked out on the defence. As a result, they ended up as a fabulous team. They were the most deserving SB champions I can remember. But then came the next year... Smith was no longer around, Agholor did not take the next step, Jeffery lined up for a bigger contract, the RB position was no longer such a strength, etc. There was some switching back and forth in the QB position. And, suddenly, they had a 9-7 team. That is around the average one would expect in the Roseman era in Philadelphia. Personally, I would take this video down a notch. And let us revisit this analysis when Wentz gets his big contract, and that will complicate roster decisions
@randomdude20315 жыл бұрын
He didn't have control for the 14 or 15 seasons iirc, because Chip had full roster control.
@mirzadzomba98525 жыл бұрын
@@randomdude2031 Of course, you have a point there. Still, Roseman was the lead guy in the front office in both those years (general manager and then executive vice president for football operations). It is not plausible to assume that he had nothing to do with how those two seasons turned out.
@christianstrauss22836 жыл бұрын
Huge Eagles fan, really enjoyed the video! Another point I would make is that the eagles do a great job of identifying their cornerstone players and locking them up early. Cox, Ertz, Lane Johnson, Kelce, etc. Not only are these players cheaper because you lock them up before they hit the market, but you also avoid the unknown that free agents bring. Howie learned from the 2011 dream team days that a bunch of mercenary free agents don't always come together as a great team.

Il Valentino it's gonna be more than that. The NFC is stacked af. Eagles, San Fran, Aaron Rodgers, Vikings, rams, cowboys, panthers, Falcons, and every other team can be just as relevant but not every team gets their respect. Lions and bears are gonna be good. Will they have a good record? Probably not but that's because they're in a tough conference. It's insane how big the gap between the NFC and AFC is

As long as the 49ers have Paraag Marathe architecting the contracts they should be ok with their cap. The Garoppolo contract is brilliantly done by frontloading it, and not a high % in guarantees.

The blueprint will fall apart when Carson wentz gets paid. You want to know the REAL blueprint it’s to get a QB on a rookie deal and load up talent around him and hope you win a title. The Seahawks started this blueprint with Russell now the eagles and rams are following suit. As soon as you have to pay your Qb you have to let that second wave go in free agency. The eagles won one and have a few more years to try and win another. That’s the real blueprint teams are trying to use now.

When Carson's contract comes due for the 2021 season, the Eagles roster will look very different. Foles, Bennett, Ngata, Peters, Long, Jenkins, McLeod, and Corey Graham probably won't be on the team. Between their contracts and new talent from draft acquisitions, the Eagles will be more than $35m positive in cap space.

Goddamn Brett, this video is gold. Amazing work. Please don't apologize for a longer or "different" video. This was in my personal opinion one of the best videos you've done. Keep up the good work and I would love to see some longer form videos like this that take on a different perspective. I would love to see you do a deep dive on what the Bears are embarking on. If the idea of drafting Leonard Floyd to be Aldon Smith and Roquan Smith to be Pat Willis is smart or dumb by Vic Fangio. What's your prognosis on the Kyle Fuller and Prince Amukamara deals? Smart or foolish? What do you think of the copy LA Rams by hiring Nagy and throwing weapons left and right for Mitch Trubisky to work with. etc.

This video has better analysis than I've ever seen on TV. It's so much more enjoyable to hear from people that understand how the NFL works today and not just some people that played the game decades ago that don't really know how it works today.

This team is so LOADED !! They are by far the deepest most talented team in the NFL and its not even close !! They have the Best starting QB / back up QB combo. Best D Line and deepest D Line. 4 Starting RBs. Now 2 Starting TEs. The Best O Line in football ! Great WRs ! Only minor weakness is the 2ndary BUT a great pass rush takes care of that. Number 2 was the "NY Giants" formula. Eagles were trying to replicate what got the Giants to 2 Super Bowls. Giants constantly stacked up on pass rushers and olineman for over a decade under Jerry Reese. It was unfortunate for the Giants that their GM kept drafting a lot of misses in the recent years tho.
@blazinpyromaniac6 жыл бұрын
drealmerz7 z Nah Reid was more about defensive tackles not ends. Giants started the Defensive end pass rush movement especially with their NASCAR package. When Giants won the Super Bowl against the Pats the first time, Reid started to replicate the Giants and started drafting 2 or even 3 DEs in one draft. Eagles continues to do so since Reid left
@blazinpyromaniac6 жыл бұрын
Alan Baldino Yeah because Giant's previous GM Reese never revamped the oline even after the 2016 season when it was a clear issue. Not having more than 2.5 secs to throw because of the lack of protection keeps the offense very limited. Reese should've known better especially with having a 36-year old QB, but he really believed that Ereck Flowers and others could turn it around. Giants oline was bad, which affected the running game, which in turn affects the playaction game, which in turn affects the deep passing game, which in turn affects the entire offense. Giants offense became very limited and predictable. With the drafting of Barkley, Giants can finally see their first 1000+ yard rushing RB since 2012, which will open up the entire offense.
@blazinpyromaniac6 жыл бұрын
NFC East is always tough to play in. There's a new division leader every year or so. I'm sure the Giants will get their shit together since they made a lot of changes in the off season. And I'm just pointing out that the Eagles did not in fact "invent" having a lot of pass rushers. Everyone knows that was the Giants who invented this. They won 2 Super Bowls by loading up on pass rushers. Of course, Eagles did a lot of things right. I mean, they did win a Super Bowl with a backup QB.

I like the list, overall good philosophy, especially regarding Phillies scheme. Though I really disagree this is Roseman revolutionizing how NFL rosters are built, or "The Howie Roseman Formula" a lot of good teams have been trying to do this for years. That it all came together for the Eagles is a credit to the Eagles. But it in no way makes it *their* formula. 1. Philly is both extremely lucky, and extremely savvy. Most people it seems recognized for example that Bradford was not worth a 1st and 4th overall, and it was fortuitous (for the Eagles) that Bridgewater got a potentially career ending injury, and the team he was on felt they were only a middling QB away from contending. Not only that but how much of this makes the world so much easier when you hit on "your guy"? Teams try to do that every year, it is especially nothing new or interesting. That they got him, (on their first offensive 1st round pick since 2010 no less) and got him on the rookie deal perhaps most importantly, which allows for a LOT of fluidity when it comes to other cap space issues. The most poignant thing you mentioned was treating the fringe starter QB group as a currency is really interesting and something that more teams should look into that Howie has definitely exploited. Grab the high quality backups, and make teams overpay when, for example, Aaron Rodgers has a 4-6 week injury but the Packers could still be in the thick of things to compete once he gets back. That's definitely an exploitable area. 2. This isn't changing anything about conventional wisdom on building rosters, the DL rotation, and keeping them fresh has been in vogue for years now. Draft wisdom from nearly every major analyst has always said build from the inside out. Rotational pass rushers was highlighted even the year before when Pats came back on the Falcons, they stopped generating pressure because the DL was dead. Seahawks in their prime also where regularly committed to the DL. As for the wisdom in drafting OL high, look at Dallas for years prior. 3. This also isn't just a Roseman phenomenon, look at the top contending teams defensively for the last couple years and you'll see those all have excellent safeties. Seahawks with Kam, and Thomas are probably the most iconic. DBs where definitely an Achilles heel for the Eagles. Also look at shit defenses and usually you'll see that their specifically their safeties aren't good. 4. This is interesting. Perhaps the most prominent point for me, though because it's an unsexy position, I've not looked at the trends to see whether this is true of Roseman, and the Eagles specifically, or whether this has been a while in the making with a lot of teams focusing on it before the Eagles SB run. 5. Kinda duh. Don't really have much to say on this one. Adaptability is key, it's seemingly underutilized in the NFL, and something that not only Roseman does well, but the people he hired for his coaching staff seem to do well at too. I don't like the predictive statements that he already can see what's happening 5 years into the future, I think that's a presumptive. I'll take a wait and see approach. The mantle for how important this point is obviously goes to Belicheck. Beyond those five points though, I think you discount how prevalent these strategies have been in other NFL teams and also have to look at how this teams have drafted and in some ways how incredibly lucky, and/or savvy the Eagles FO has been in acquiring talent. Sure you can say that oh, just draft OL and DL every time in the 1st Round and you'll have this amazing stout D, and stuff, well no. Look at the Seahawks drafts, they always draft DL, and despite what people say, have put a lot of resources into OL. It just hasn't panned out. Also it cannot be overstated how valuable it is to have your franchise QB on a rookie deal. (And how lucky it is that their first QB that they are going for since 2010 is a hit) That's now in the range of 30mil/year freed up to be able to spend. Sure proper evaluation of say the RB and DB positions can allow you to invest more in positions that are deemed important, but nothing, absolutely nothing, can be as cap saving as a franchise QBs rookie contract. I think we should also just acknowledge how good the Eagles coaching staff is. Like a bunch of the Eagles success this year came from #5, and it was from the coaching staff being able to adapt and use Nick Foles really, really well. Roseman should get credit for bringing a staff in that exemplifies those qualities, yes, but a large (majority imo) portion of credit really should go to the coaching staff. To end it off, for me, this isn't just "Oh for sure people are going to try and copy the Eagles," it is that in fact teams have already been trying to implement these strategies for years now, and a lot of them have been successful. I get why it's easy to call this the "Howie Roseman Formula" Next year it will just be the "Current SB team GM/Coaching Formula" and shimmy some things around, call it the new way things are being done, and that everyone should try to copy this obvious model of success and jeez shucks guys why haven't all the other teams done this already?! Absolutely give credit to the Eagles for getting everything put together, and getting a SB. But by and large, this isn't just their formula, and it's something teams have been working at for *years* to accomplish.

Brandon Porter very excited even the point about the backup qb Jacoby with time is a solid starter for a team needy qb, he’s currently weighing the market for safeties after the draft, he put competition at the right tackle position, he drafted for trenches. I fully believe in the Ballard way.

Tyrod Taylor is the best QB the Browns have had in ages. The Bills will regret letting go of the best QB they've had in a decade and Hyde didn't fit Shanahan's offense. Also I believe they have better weapons he had in Buffalo. Some say Callaway was the best WR in this draft. They could make some noise this year. Too bad Thomas retired.

QB carousel, bust picks in the draft, lousy free agency signings, and most importantly, a bad losing culture. That season has been several seasons in the making for them.
@TheTeremaster6 жыл бұрын
Cleveland could probably have a winning season this year. It's crazy i know but it's possible. Despite all their holes, their run defense was elite last year, and they were top 10 in average yards allowed per drive. They now have a good QB in Tyrod and a potentially elite one in Mayfield, plus proper workhorses in Hyde and Chubb. I think their biggest problem defensively was their coverage couldn't hold long enough for the extremely talented pass rush to actually get home, which they've now fixed by drafting Ward, and the biggest problem on offense was turnovers, and Tyrod rarely turns it over.
