Jordan Klepper has heard a lot of 9/11 conspiracy theories at Trump rallies, including this shiny emerald: Osama bin Laden was a CIA operative named Tim Ossman. Together with Dr. Joan Donovan, research director of Harvard’s Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy, Jordan unpacks how the early days of the internet and social media have shaped 9/11 conspiracy theories that are still popping up in more places than rallies two decades later. They are joined by veteran and filmmaker Korey Rowe who co-produced “Loose Change,” one of the first viral conspiracy theory films on 9/11. They discuss the legacy of the film, how the right wing has weaponized conspiracy theories for political gain, and what conversations we should be having about the role of the media. #DailyShow #JordanKlepper #Podcast

I am a 69 year old, seen a lot of things come and go, duck and cover at school, rise of Russia, Cold War, space race, death of Pres. Kennedy, Viet Nam etc. I morphed from a Father that checked out John Birch, A Mother that was a voice of reason and truth. Asking my brother about the swastikas on his school notebook. As a young adult, I rejected what my fathers family espoused. I knew their racism and hate made no sense. The last two years I have become a You Tube Crone, listening, listening. This past year is the first year of my life I truly feared for my safety as a liberal. Loved this program, great discussion. You folks give me hope for our future. Peace out! Carry On 🙋🏼‍♀️

What's amazing about the Daily Show is how much hard hitting deep-dive investigative journalism has come out of it. John Oliver, Samantha Bee, Roy Wood Jr., and Jordan Klepper are all taking closer looks at the issue than the any of the big news networks.

I haven't heard much sanity from him, but what about Epstein's client list? The guy had more video on his kiddy island compound than the NSA and CIA combined. The guy had bribery material on nearly everyone on earth of any relevance. Where's the list? Why hasn't ONE single kiddy tickler gone to trial or prison other than his female facilitator/friend Gislane Maxwell? Face it, there's no greater corrupt or evil organization than the federal government. No conspiracy required, just outwardly evil, and largely ignored by Democrats because of their own role in it

When Loose Change first hit KZbin years ago I watched the full video. It was at least an hour long if not longer. Amazing effort trying to prove the conspiracy theory behind the entire September 11th nightmare. I was born and raised in Brooklyn New York I worked in Manhattan my entire life. I was working downtown on Nassau Street in the financial district when this took place. My brother and my brother-in-law both worked in the World Trade Center. It's a miracle that the attack did not take place later in the day. Both towers had a capacity of 60,000 people. Can you imagine the outcry and the repercussions if the Towers came down when they were full? I don't think this fact was brought up by anyone. I am very big on facts and figures. There are people posting right here on this very video that are on the side of the conspiracy theorist When I read it I really get aggravated. Nowadays I try to stay away from these type of people now life is too short can't convince them of anything anyway even though there was footage of both planes flying into the World Trade Center they still believe that it was remote control military planes and the people that were in the planes are happy and smiling somewhere. too much I can't even go on.

I recently listened to the audiobook of "Voodoo Histories: The Role of the Conspiracy Theory in Shaping Modern History" by David Aaronovitch. About 15 minures left, but I feel compelled to share. This is a wonderful conversation with two people sharing such interesting and compelling perspectives from the academic side as well as the "practitioner" side, so to speak. I was not a part of the 9/11 Truther stuff, even though I was very active on the internet at the time, so this was a revelation.. some 20 years later. I really appreciate his insights as well as Dr. Donovan's research. The ideas of mass communication and its impact on human development is a real and lively one, one I discuss in my Interpersonal Communication course. My concern has to do with identity development among younger people because we used to develop our identities in real communication with other people face-to-face, but now we shape our identities based upon images on phones and laptops and mediated communication that provides an artificial sensibility of communication.

@@melsafken764 I'd be careful about that one. The idea that video games make people violent has been going on since at least the 90s and seems to be pretty debunked. A lot of people play violent games, most of them aren't violent. However, while I dont think there is a direct correlation, I do think it could be part of the issue, especially when we consider identity. So when asking the question about video games and identity development, I think its necessary to ask what video games, how much exposure, and what age?

@@Khronogi @Mel Safken I would echo the notion that violent video games as a cause has been debunked, BUT I would also caution that a person, who was too addicted to video games and remained alone and isolated playing those games, even if in semi-social online "guilds", might suffer the same consequences as someone stuck on their phone. Isolation from real human contact can be detrimental regardless. It is not necessarily the violence of the games, but the addiction and/or isolation caused by playing those game to the exclusion of human interaction and normal socializing and development. I cannot claim any of the cool research credit, unfortunately, but Sherry Turkle at MIT has done some very interesting work. There is a great discussion she did for the American Academy of Arts and Sciences called "Technology and Empathy After COVID-19" which sparked a lot of ideas and thoughts. She has been engaged with this idea of technology's impact on our personality and identity development for decades. Check out Sherry Turkle's work. It is extraordinary. The book we assign in the course at Temple is called Alone Together and is about a decade old, but predicted a shocking number of recent developments, even if she seems to understate human adaptability to technology

Rowe came across a bit slimy to me, tbh. The poor dude definitely has been through a lot, and had a huge cultural shock when he realized what the U.S. gov't and our overseas policies really looked like. But I kept on getting this vibe that his main priority wasn't really to fully acknowledge his part in it and to really examine exactly what the nature of misinformation was--that his main goal really is to secure his legacy. He didn't want what he and his friends created to be associated with the monster that exists now. It's understandable. No creator would 't want their work to suddenly get used like that. It's disgusting. But every time he talked, I swear I could hear the anxiety behind that overpower everything else, even when it comes at the cost of honesty.

@@Hoberpopkin I think he has traits consistent with any dedicated conspiracy theorist. If the theory doesn't ring true for you any more, you either bend it til it resonates or drop it completely and take up a new one. I wish you had asked Korey for a more specific version of his position -- it sounded like he was saying that there should be no restrictions on internet speech whatsoever and the control should take the form of (a) teaching critical thinking and putting the responsibility on the consumer to thoughtfully consider what they're seeing and hearing and (b) suing / prosecuting people who take negative actions that they take based on bad information. It's an idea that makes me nervous; on the one hand, it sounds like it would be the best way to go if we could trust people to be sensible, but I think the last few years have shown that we really can't. I'd love to talk to him about what tradeoffs he thinks are appropriate, if any.

@@jayfrank1913 I've always been on KZbin from the beginning and posting responses to content isn't exactly that social since with people... It's not really geared towards socializing... Yes anyone can create and share content... But it's not really about putting one's existence on display... Most content actually has to have some kind of "purpose"... While things like TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram seem to me to be more about who's posting than what's being posted... It's form vs function... Which is exactly what Postman postulates... At what point does the medium become the message and the message no longer even matters... It is rather disappointing that he unfortunately passed away before he had a chance to see what exists as "media" and the kinds of "discourse" we engage in today... I'd love to hear what he'd say... But I knew from very early on... I was never ever going to win any kind of popularity contest ever... So I don't find anything compelling at all about social media because it's pretty much a waste of time... Because no one is ever going to ever care about what I have to say in any real meaningful way... And that also why I like posting on KZbin... Because it's not my job to in anyway even in my control to attract anyone to my posts... My popularity or other lack there of means nothing to the popularity or visibility of the content that inspired the beginning of the discourse... But I can guarantee you... There would be 0 engagement with anything related to me at all...

Easily one of the best conversations I’ve seen and heard lately. I grew up in the same era, and the digital democratization that was essentially driven by Final Cut Pro and miniDV was amazing. I liken this to the early days of Lalapalooza - the realization that you were not alone. That there was a huge community of other doubters or truth seekers, or what have you… I remember in 2008 or 2009 living in Seattle, working as an editor and cameraman living inside the digital future that was “now” (then) and the general consensus was that we’d already gone past “peak-internet”. The days of “Do no evil” as the Google mantra were behind us with Brin, Bezos, Gates, Zuck, and Jobs all looking for the next way to make SERIOUS money.

This is a vital conversation, and both guests were fantastic. I think the acknowledgment of the cultural elements of it all is critical- the drive to be the change maker, to be the newsmaker, to be the citizen journalist, which can take the aspiring influencer from the typical, expected engagement to the attention of millions overnight, and the impact that can have on an unprepared "civilian" that is desperately hoping it will happen. Also, I can't help but feel like a missing tool in the toolbox to combat misinformation is a more aggressive and concerted effort to develop emotional intelligence and critical thinking skills. Less about the control of the information and more focus on how we individually contend with all the information we receive from any source, be that the government, a youtube channel, your parents, or your neighbor. This is a long way around to what I wanted to say initially, which is thank you Jordan! I appreciate you a great deal.
@kharris2393

I hadn't really thought of emotional intelligence as a tool, but you're absolutely right. The knowledge that most information is going to make you feel a certain way, and that you should be asking "Is that intentional?" "Is this emotion proportional?" "Why might someone want me to feel this way"? That's very interesting.
