In this video, Vanessa Williams talked about touching base with her Ancestors and the ease to walk around freely and not being judged by your skin color.
For too long, people of color have had to keep their heads down and avoid attention in order not to be judged in the Western corridors. But in GHANA! it's okay to be who you are and loves who you love. And that includes being able to walk around freely and not be judged by your skin color.
Vanessa Williams is joined by three other women who journeyed to the motherland, Accra, Ghana to be precise.. She graced the Dentaa Show to share her experience and future aspirations for the continent
Vanessa Williams is one of the most respected and multi-faceted performers in the entertainment industry today. Having sold millions of records worldwide, Vanessa has also achieved numerous #1 and Top 10 hits on various Billboard Album and Singles charts: Pop, Dance, R&B, Adult Contemporary, Holiday, Latin, Gospel and Jazz.
Her critically acclaimed work in film, television, recordings and the Broadway stage has been recognized by every major industry award affiliate including 4 Emmy nominations, 11 Grammy nominations, a Tony nomination, 3 SAG award nominations, 7 NAACP Image Awards and 3 Satellite Awards. A graduate of Syracuse University, Vanessa is a strong advocate for equal rights, especially concerning the gay community and minorities. She was honored with the Human Rights Campaign “Ally for Equality” Award for her humanitarian contributions. Vanessa also achieved a career pinnacle with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2007.
Vanessa’s autobiography, “You Have No Idea,” co-written with her mother Helen Williams, was a New York Times Best Seller in 2012. Her recent Broadway credits include co-starring with Cicely Tyson in The Trip to Bountiful, (the #1 play of the 2013 season), After Midnight (2014), and a special limited engagement in Hey, Look Me Over at New York City Center in 2018. Vanessa is currently in Josie Rourke’s City of Angels in London’s West End.

My first time in Africa, I visited Ghana for 3 months. Prior, I realised that I complained so much, but was living a life of priviledge in the west. Changed my life tremendously, now I live in Rwanda with husband and children. Building a legacy here and creating the first black library here, launching January 27th and built a hotel. Great content, keep them coming. Thanks

First time I got off the plane, I had this overwhelming calm hit me. I was excited and happy to go see different things and learn about the cultures but I was also so calm. There were sooooo many black people around! And it wasn't a feeling of judging you like "there's those negroes" it was people asking what culture/tribe you are from. And I couldn't tell them at that point, but the lady I was speaking to said "don't worry, you'll find it either by feeling or actual DNA. Just know you belong. " It was the only time I felt like a person the whole time. I was judged on my soul, my spirit, my manners. Not on the fact that I look like some little woman who might need saving or that could be easily kidnapped. Best damn near 3 weeks of my life! I have now learned five languages so far so I can speak to my fellow Africans in anything but English and I know it will make my friend Thandeka so happy when I surprise her with it on my return trip.

When I went to Africa as an African-American. How can I put this I understood what it feels like to be white in America. It’s like someone took a blue whale off my back. To see everyone the shop owner, store owner, grocery store owner, taxi cab driver, Bus driver, everybody, the guy cooking your food, the young lady cooking your food. Was similar to me that is such a liberating feeling. And I understand but I didn’t feel hateful when I did see a white person like many of them feel aboutWhen they see us in their spaces.

Afro Caribbean have the same experience of freedom and that's why they " act different ". When you come from a society, where you're not targeted because of your color, you move and act without restrictions.

@@Svg784p The Caribbean is not free from the impact of slavery and colonialism, not in the least. It may be more relaxed but it is not free from its impact. Secondly, what you’re referring to gets you a wake up call in America, big time. The environment is different here and you cannot move the same. Blacks from majority countries think they know America, they do not and they get a heavy dose of reality when they get here. Thinking they can open up shops in Idaho and not have issues 😂. People need to stop coming from other countries thinking they know how another country operates. We know this country (and non-Blacks) like the back of our hands. They better start listening😂.

When they walked under that last bath Arch I teared up. I'm not Ghanaian but welcome home. You have to remember a lot of stolen people were sorely missed when they were abducted and there's healing in you walking back there for them because they return vicariously through you. Go home.Emotional stuff I can't lie.

The problem that I have with east Africa is you guys had your own slave trade going on in east africa called the *"Arab slave trade"* an alot of Africans from East Africa were sold off to the Arabs so why aren't east African nations coming together and trying to bring back the diasporans back home that we're sold off to the Arab? Atleast when it comes to ghana and Sierra Leone they are trying to make amends with the diasporans that left west Africa and went to the Americas,, the are asking them to return home, but for some reason i find it weird how east Africa isn't doing anything to bring their diasporans back home that were sold off to Arabs during the Arab slave trade. If you guys welcome brothers and sisters why aren't yall doing the same for Africans that are living in thr middle east due to the Arab Slave Trade?
