I love this pattern and have made it twice! To avoid having to worry about which way I affix the zipper gusset to ensure it closes to the left- I cheat and use 2 zipper pulls that both close to the middle. And because my rear carry handle on my 1st bag frayed and pulled out of the seam- I will cut it 2” longer than the pattern calls for, then fold it, insert according to the pattern with the folded part extending past the back panel. Once the gusset is attached to the back panel- I rivet the folded part of the handle strap to the back panel. I hope this help you to reinforce your backpack if, like me, you carry too much stuff! Thanks for a great tutorial Jess!!

@@barbaradeckers457 thanks Barbara! Just to be clear, when I basted the back panel to the back lining panel- I tucked the folded handle in between the layers to enclose it. I just waited until after attaching the gusset to place the rivets to be sure they would stay out of the way of my stitching.

Yes I've had my webbing comes undone through my stitches in a backpack so I've been hesitant to use the seat belt webbing again. I do burn my edges as well to help with the fraying but I think I carry too much in my bags... Lol

I got some waxed canvas for Christmas and have been playing musical chairs with what "bag" I should make (wanna make a bike pannier hopefully) and THIS has got to be THE COOLEST construction method I've seen yet. The thing I love the most about your video is how you explain the technical parts of the construction which totally dissolves the scariness of it all - Great Karma to You Jess for sharing your knowledge and your enthusiasm !!! :D:D:D

I love my Sandhill Sling from Noodlehead but I absolutely LOATHE it when pattern companies don't provide pattern pieces. If I pay for a pattern, GIVE ME A PATTERN. I don't care if it's all rectangles. It takes so much longer because I either have to measure every single piece and cut them or measure everything out on my own paper so it ends up being so much more work. Do better!! Why can't you, as the pattern company, do the WORK and give us an actual pattern? Jess, you did a beautiful job on this bag!

Just made this bookbag and love it!!! however, If I were to cut it down in size how is the best way to do that? I had to use two rolls of vinyl to get the size and there is a lot of wasted vinyl, the rolls were just shy of being enough. 18x54. So if I were to cut it down by lets say 1 inch would that be on every measurements? (ie) 16x12 1/2 and make it 15 x 11 1/2 would that work for ALL the ones I have to cut down?? Thank you for you time and I have use your video for a lot of my bag making. Love them keep them coming...

I discovered at my work conference this week that I need a laptop backpack (my back was REALLY angry with my regular laptop bag). Do you think it would be too much to put foam in the back panel and expand that inside pocket to just a slide pocket, also with foam? I really want to try it, but I'm afraid it will be too thick.
