Good tutorial. You can also hold down Ctrl for the Direct Selection tool and Alt for the Anchor Point tool while using the Pen tool without having to switch. I think what people meant by "complicated" is when you have a complicated sketch and you're trying to get a 1:1 perfect trace on it. Trying to get curves to match the source can take practice.

Best pen tool tutorial ever! For the story, I so much see AI (as in Artificial Intelligence) new tools all around that I thought this was a new AI pen tool on illustrator when I saw the thumbnail 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️. I have been a Ai (as in Illustrator 😂) user for more than 20 years though. 😃

Excellent strategy and killer video! Here are my notes: Step 1: create secant lines joined by the anchor points at the critical points Step 2: use the anchor point tool (SHIFT + C) 2.a: click on the anchor point and drag 2.b: do not drag from the line - only do it from the anchor point Step 3: use direct selection tool (A) 3.a: click on anchor point 3.b: use handles to refine

Excellent! The only point I will add, which maybe wasn’t stated, is that in certain situations, it’s okay to drag with the anchor point tool from the line -but only if you deliberately want your anchor points to break at a sharp angle, rather than a smooth one, which for good designs, is usually a rare circumstance

A better way to do this is to use the curvature tool that's next to or under the pen tool (shift + ~) After you draw the rigid lines, click on the anchor with the curvature tool and it will turn it into a smooth curve. Also the best part is that you can click on the anchor or line with the curvature tool and still adjust and drag it and the curves will always look smooth.

Hi, may I ask, if I just want to adjust only one side of those two handles at a time, how to do that? Cuz whenever I adjust any side of those handles, it will move both side together.

certainly! first remove any handles you currently have (shift+c to use anchor point tool, then click the vertex of your choosing), then use the anchor point tool on the line(s) next to your vertex, by clicking and dragging the line out by any amount. This will create anchor point handles on the vertex and when you drag the handles now, it will not be connected to the other handle!

is it essential to sketch first before using pen tool? is this so called mighty tool is only for tracing purpose? if u need paper and pencil for the major part of the creation, then what's the point of using this software? for inking purpose only? it seems procreate is better option for actual drawing, isn't it?

People use Illustrator because it’s vector based whereas Procreate is raster based. You can use either depending on how you think your artwork will be used. If your artwork is for print, you think it’ll be sized and used in different places, etc, use Illustrator because vector based means that no matter how much you scale it you won’t lose any quality but raster based loses quality when you zoom in. This is just my basic take on it and definitely do some research bc I’m still an amateur graphic designer and by no means am an expert
