Dude thanks for this. My brother and I are beginning our edit of a full feature film. I will be doing the main cut and he will be doing color, sound and temp score simultaneously. After following this tutorial we have everything set up and we will blast through this edit. Thank you. It's been a dearth of content in previous years when it came to Resolve. Glad someone is stepping up because this platform needs to be used far and wide.

Jake, you're the best. Thank you for that encouragement. I honestly don't do much for grading the tutorial content itself, sometimes just touch of extra contrast and saturation but I'm sure at some point this year I'll do some color page tips. There's a lot of information out there already on Resolve color it's down my list of important things to share. My titles are all over the place at the moment as I'm learning Fusion. Most of what you see is actually apple Keynote slides with default presets, exported as a video file (at least the chapter markers usually are). I know, not too exciting but efficient. Cheers.

Hello. We found it very useful for our workflow. We followed this tutorial and we've been using this for a couple of months. Now we are planning to transfer the host to another computer. We created a new project server and exported a new RESOLVEDBKEY file but the file did not work for the other computers which are also connected to the same network and all have the same version of Davinci Resolve. The file only works on the computer where the key was created. What could possibly be the problem? Does this have something to do with the firewall etc. or anything else? Thank you in advance!

I wish the edit tab was also simultaneously collaborative like writing on Google Docs; the workaround so far has been to work on separate timelines and combine the work later on the main timeline. I don't understand or trust the "compare timelines" feature just yet. I would rather just copy and paste between timelines once a scene or section is ready. Having been able to color grade at the same time has been nuts... I usually do exposure and contrast while my partner does color. and wow... yesterday we even rendered two different deliverables at the same time from different machines. It has sped up some jobs so much... I'm loving this feature... Except this morning, my TrueNAS server broke, and I lost all my proxies for a big project. * NOT davinci's fault. On another note, I've been having big problems with the new AI noise reduction.. cannot drag clips over the timeline because it throws an error. The timeline freezes, and you can't even press CMD + Z .... what?!! the safest way has been to turn on automatic version history. and don't mess with the AI filter until they finish coding it properly. Thanks a lot for the tutorial, whatch it several times.

Thanks! Super useful. Quick question - is there a way to tell if a given clip already has a corresponding proxy (or optimized media) file already generated for it?
@CreativeVideoTips
@CreativeVideoTips 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, in the media page, media pool, you can turn on the column for proxy and proxy path. If you see a result there then it has a file linked behind the scenes. It will say the resolution and the file path in those 2 columns. If it doesn't and you know one exists (like one created in camera) you can right click to link to the proxy file as well.

Currently just editing my kids basketball games but like most other people we have collected 10-15 years of 3 kids photos and videos; so thinking to use davinci to organize or make them into some meaningful type movies. thanks for feedback!! :)

Possibly a dumb question here, but I occasionally collaborate with another editor in a different part of the same city. We can easily have physical copies of the same rushes, but is it possible for us to collaborate on a project in Resolve without buying expensive cloud drives, etc? What I see here is people in the same room connecting their computers physically, which is not what I need right now.

Hey thank you for this helpful tutorial, but we still have one problem. We tried to cut and grade at the same time on different computers with different ssds(with the same files on it) but Davinci is rather losing my footage on the timeline or the other one on the other computer. So Resolve just mount one ssd and not both, but why. Do you have a fix for this?

Hey Chadwick, great channel. I’ve been binging a few of your vids on Davinci and find them extremely helpful. Just wondering on this one - I see you just produced it in Feb of this year - is it all a moot point now that BM has released their cloud features in DR-18? Is there still a workflow that would require this even with that cloud option?
@CreativeVideoTips

Hey thanks so much for watching. Yes this was before the beta was released however it’s still a way to work within a local network with shared storage. However in most cases I would point people toward the new cloud database. Have you seen my video posted this week on cloud collaboration? Anyways it’s still a valid option. But it will be much less necessary.

So the thing is.. I have to go to a client soon but i want to edit locally on my macbook for the highest speeds possible. How would i go about copying the project at the end of the day to their server? They could also ask me to edit directly from their server. Is it best practice to just make a database on their server then? They're used to the premiere pro workflow where they put every project in a specific location on the server with all media in folders next to it. I'm just trying to wrap my head around how i have to do this, because the database workflow is so different. If anyone could help me or give me options on how to do this the most efficient i would highly appreciate it. Thanks you Chadwick for your great video's, love your channel!

Thanks for your videos! In my case, I'm on a PC, my editor on a mac. I'm in California. My editor, in Michigan. I set up a regular Disk Database on my google drive shared disk. My editor sees all updates I make to projects in the database, but of course each time one of us opens the project, we get the 'need to update database location' (or similar message). Essentially, we need to keep re-linking the media (even though it's also stored on the shared google drive) that we both have access to and locally synced on each machine. I understand the benefits of PostgresSQL, but in our case, I don't think we can get it working like you can on a local network. It seems like my current config is 99% perfect... if we didn't have to re-link media each time. Can you think of a way to fix the re-linking issue? Or is what I've experienced just a limitation of a Resolve database being saved on a cloud drive? (thanks in advance as it's been hard to find any info on this)
@CreativeVideoTips
@CreativeVideoTips 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Will, thanks for your thoughtful comment. There are 2 approaches to this problem. But the one I would suggest you try, because it's so simple and is working for me right now. Version 18 has the new cloud libraries (I have a tutorial here on the channel about it). This is ideal for what you are doing and only costs $5 a month for one of you. Blackmagic will host the database for you (really it looks like its amazon, but through blackmagic cloud). There is also a new linking system built into version 18 that tracks local storage locations so you don't need to relink assets like you are now. It is still in beta, but is working for me. I'm a risk taker. I would of course make copies of your project locally in case the cloud goes down. The other way is far too involved to explain on a comment but would be to either host the database on an S3 cloud bucket, or one of you locally have it and open a VPN tunnel to each others computers. If you don't have a static IP for your work locations this gets messy fast.
@WillGibbons
@WillGibbons 2 жыл бұрын
@@CreativeVideoTips Fantastic! Thanks for the reply. I hadn't come across V18's cloud libraries yet and yes, that looks like it'll be the way to go here. My work isn't super critical since I'm not working on creating videos for clients or anything like that, so I can probably accept the risk that comes with working on beta software. Thanks again!

fantastic. I need to do this! Question; howe powerful does the server computer have to be? I would imagine not much of anything. Have you ever set this up on another platform that can run SQL, like a ReadyNAS NAS? I'm planning to build this so I can access my files from home over a VPN connection.
@CreativeVideoTips
@CreativeVideoTips 2 жыл бұрын
Not too powerful, or even that fast. A gig network is plenty. The speed should come from the file server with the media. If you can swing 10 gig e with a faster raid that would be ideal but there are always proxies. I haven’t use a Synology for this purpose but if I was shopping today I might go that route. You should make a video about the whole process so we can all learn more about it.
@photojoseph
@photojoseph 2 жыл бұрын
@@CreativeVideoTips if I figure this out I totally will. I have a Netgear ReadyNAS which I think is capable of running the software. If not; fine, and old Mac mini should do it. I want to design a workflow where every single import in Resolve (media goes to local NVMe) gets proxy footage automatically generated and copied to the NAS, so I can VPN into my studio, open a project and be scrubbing through the proxy footage. Would have to be light weight footage but could always cache locally to the laptop if the internet connection isn’t sufficient. That’s my hope!!
@photojoseph
@photojoseph 2 жыл бұрын
OK that was super easy to set up. It looks like my gigabit internet isn't happening any time soon, so I'll likely be copying proxy footage, but that's not that big of a deal. I've run some tests comparing Resolve's H265 vs H264, and H265 took slightly longer to encode, but is one third the file size. Unfortunately this ties up Resolve. I use KYNO, and did some tests in there, and can generate H.264 in half the time, with file sizes the same as Resolve's H.265, but effing Kyno screws up timecode from 60p footage so that's a non-starter, at least for now. I set the default durations for proxy media to be my server, so when generating it, it just automatically goes there. This is a remarkably simple workflow. I love it, thanks!

We're copying files and have two independent databases. It's really annoying. This could be a great solution. What i'm wondering is, if it's only possible to connect two Computers, or even more? Sometimes, i need to attach a MacBook Pro if there are three people working. Does this work and is it possible to have 1 Computer come and go day by day? Also does it has any impact, if three Computers access files form one RAID System or in your case one SSD? They are normally made to be connected to only one Computer.

fantastic tutorial! Anyone out there know how to move a project from a local database to the PostgreSQL database ?
@CreativeVideoTips
@CreativeVideoTips 2 жыл бұрын
You should be able to just copy (command C) in the project manager, and then paste (command V) in the other database - it might take a moment if its a big project

Thank you for the tutorial! Question: is it ok to turn off the computer that is being used as a server when no one is using Davinci?
@CreativeVideoTips
@CreativeVideoTips 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. For sure if nobody needs access that is no issue. It's just obviously if another computer needs to see the database, the database computer needs to be on.

Is it right to say the New Blackmagic cloud in Resolve 18 has made all the information in this video outdated?
@CreativeVideoTips
@CreativeVideoTips 2 жыл бұрын
Great question, but actually no, All of the collaboration stuff works exactly the same on the back half of this video. The main difference is that you don't have to use a PostgreSQL database anymore. You can simplify it with Blackmagic Cloud (and a $5 fee).

Is this collaboration workflow still possible in 18.6.2? The reason why I ask this is because of BMD pushing out their cloud workflow

It absolutely is still possible. I set it up for companies regularly but can be done very easily with a mac and a free download. Works great.

Hi so im using the new Davinci reolve 18.5 beta for this. Im testing out the sending of the key from my desktop, which i made the server, to my main pc becaus ei intend to send this to a couple of my friends for editing. For some reason, when I export the key, i can use the key perfectly fine on my davinci resolve on the desktop. but when i send the kep to my pc and then try to access it, it does not work it pulls up with the prompt "Cannot Connect to Network Project Library, Please check for correct credentials and if the server is online and allows client connections." I opened up both the keys from my pc and desktop and they are identical and I had the server running. I have no idea what I did wrong. Can someone help a brother out.

@CreativeVideoTips

Yes you certainly can. However it does require knowing how to setup a docker container or a hypervisor/vm and running the linux project server. I have found it pretty simple to run on an inexpensive mac mini with the mac installer.

Can someone tell me why PostgreSQL is necessary for this kind of collaboration? How does it compare to the Blackmagic Cloud service released with Resolve 18? They seem to have the same functionality - in what situations would one use one or the other? Thanks
@CreativeVideoTips
@CreativeVideoTips Жыл бұрын
This video was released before blackmagic cloud. Basically they are both the same with the exception that the database is either on your local network or in blackmagic cloud (which is actually amazon web services). The blackmagic cloud limitation is 10 users per project at once and you must have internet connection. The postgres shared database shown here needs to be on the same network, but you can go without internet.

A little way beyond the average DR UT User but I need something that lets me Instruct my granddaughter in another city/state. Any suggestions. Something where we both see her screen and I and her can use her mouse/keboard and or my mouse/keyboard to enforce the instruction.

So if my editor is in Egypt, will this allow us to work on the same project together?
@CreativeVideoTips
@CreativeVideoTips 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it can, but you will need a lot more information about opening firewall ports, possible hosting the server in the cloud and of course you will each need some copy of the footage locally. I can highly recommend you check out Johns Film channel on resolve collaboration if you would like to go deeper. He’s brilliant.

@@CreativeVideoTips thank you this is what I was wondering, if my editor is in another city, i’m the one with the files and eventually taking care of the coloring and exporting.. so maybe the editor can just need proxy and I don’t have to upload terabytes of footage I’m excited thank you for this ‘storm’ of information 🤣 I need to rewatch at 50% of speed lol

If you are doing collaboration with the cloud you will set up 2 blackmagic ids. Only one has to pay $5. Or local collab is free.

I need some help, My friend who lives far away from me is editing a video and I want to try and figure out a way to collaborate easily. Ive been searching for easy ways to do it and we tried just sharing the files and importing it to my PC but I did not have the files he had supposedly and it turned into media offline. I dont know how to do this but is there a way to collaborate easily with a friend that is not in the same place as me and in a different address?

And here I thought the new resolve (18.1) was able to have multiple editors on the same network with each person having his footage on his pc and it work easily. But this is really complex buggy when I tried it. Me and my brother have 2 pc's and we want to work on projects together. We managed to connect and he can see when I do edits but he cant make any changes to the edit unless he links the files on his pc to the project, when he links the files my links break and I cant see the footage. Does the footage need to be on a network drive?
@CreativeVideoTips
@CreativeVideoTips Жыл бұрын
there is a new path mapping option that "should" help this work better that is under project settings at the bottom. Aside from that, yes a network share is ideal in your situation. You can setup a network share from one of your computers with the OS, or use something like a cloud pod on your network. Then on the higher end you can use a dedicated NAS. They all work.

I installed the project server on a mini pc but the interface doesnt look like what shows on the video there are no icons in the deader section and it only shows the project library i created. The only option on top is server users. I created a server user so i can use those credentials to connect but it wont let me. Do you know any recent video of how to set this up? I think davinci changed everything with the newer version of the project server.@@CreativeVideoTips
