That’s so simple. Working in forestry, things never break at the work shop always in the forest. Learnt to wind springs using nothing but my fingers. I still do it that way now when I’m fixing things, time for a change 👏👏

Thanks. That little hook at the end has bitten me so many times I spent hours trying to find a better way.

THAT is a fine idea! A-PLUS! I remember the old Briggs way of doing it with a block of wood inside the recoil itself. YEARS ago. This just goes to show that it might be hot there but it hasn't baked your brain out! Thanks, pal!

Thanks 😁 I do a lot of 2 strokes and they have their challenges, this solves a big one! My brain isn't completely cooked yet, but we still have 2 of the hottest 3 weeks of the year left so... I will keep you posted(unless I get brain damage from the heat) 🤣

@@GuysPlayingWithTools I think Texans would make good hillbillies and hillbillies would make good Texans, having been one all my life so far and having been around the other all my life so far but not enough to move from the relative cool of the mountainous frying pan, square-dab into the middle of the fire. So keep me posted. I turn a fan on hi pointed at my hard drive when I get a post from out there. The computer gets hot but doesn't quite melt that way.

@@lewiemcneely9143 Hillbillies are Texans that don't like the heat LOL I don't think a real hillbillies would like to live in Texas though, too flat. What the call hills and mountains here are mostly still flat enough to farm.

I am always looking for better ways to do the things that drive me crazy... Recoil springs used to mean torn up fingers every time. This makes it so easy you won't even think about them anymore.

This is Smart! And even more surprising Easy! WOW! What a great idea. No more wrestling with cobras. Just wind them up. Now I have to sit for a while...this took it out of me! Good job, Bill!

Thanks! 😁 I have fooled with the idea and improved on it a couple of times. I think this is the final idea... it's easy enough to stop looking for better ways to do it.

Great job i did the same with the screw but the wire is a great idea, i did it with strong string!!! Wire would be so much easier. Thanks bill.
@GuysPlayingWithTools
@GuysPlayingWithTools Жыл бұрын
I get them close to the size I want them to end up so they aren't too tight, string would probably work just as well
@DIYVariety

@@GuysPlayingWithTools String is little cumbersome not being stiff. But it got job done. However getting a spring back in a washer timer was a no go lol
@GuysPlayingWithTools
@GuysPlayingWithTools Жыл бұрын
The stiffness helps for sure. I would love a crack at that timer 🙂

Easy peasy just a reminder to keep all those wire ties whenever you have to buy a recoil spring they come in handy when you do as Bill did. Some time they have a circular bar of metal holding the spring together and you just slide it out into the recess once aligned.
@GuysPlayingWithTools
@GuysPlayingWithTools Жыл бұрын
Good points. I made the wire the right size for the machine I was working on, but for guys who do it a lot, if they save the wrapping wires that springs come in, they are usually close enough to work great for this.

How do you get the wire off once it's in place so you can get the plastic piece on the other end of the spring
@GuysPlayingWithTools
@GuysPlayingWithTools 5 ай бұрын
It's kinda tricky the first time, you push the spring down past the wire and it jumps off.

I had to try something different when I was rewinding one for a Stihl with the gawdawful "Easy2Start", the hole you have to put the spring in is especially deep and the tie strap end was hanging up everywhere.
