I remember the first time I watched One Piece, in episode 1 where Luffy's running around Alvida's ship and there's the reveal of his rubber body. Oda loves foils and this would be a great foil to the crew at the start - pretty much everyone gets it (Usopp the pirates to come, Zoro the Mihawk meet, Nami the 100mil) and it goes horribly for them. Luffy - who knows to want 'good' things naratively - is what saves them.

​@@LSClubhouse That's what's told at first, but recently we found out Buggy wanted Shanks to be the next Pirate King right after Roger died, but Shanks told him he wasn't ready yet (probably because of what Roger whispered to him right before he left the ship to get captured). Buggy felt betrayed by his decision which is what caused the rift between them.

It's a little more complex than that @@Chuck_Spadina - since Shanks was clearly favored to be the next Pirate King (by Roger himself, and maybe the rest of the crew), after Roger was executed in front of them and Shanks said he wasn't ready to be King, Buggy interpreted this as Shanks betraying Roger's will. So to Buggy, Shanks is defying their dad's bequest and lineage to go off and do his own thing. Like if Shanks was a prince who just decided to leave the throne empty while he went off to travel the same day as his father's funeral, meanwhile Buggy is a mere duke or lord and cannot even try to fill the seat no matter how much he wants to. :

I’ve been watching the channel for a while since there were like 3 or 4 One Piece is Hilarious videos and I’m so glad that the Easy Blue was finally made because this series convinced one of my friends to watch One Piece and I just couldn’t be happier about that. I just wana add that Buggy has a very valid reason as to why he hates Shanks so much. Spoiler ahed So way back when the two of them were on board of Gold Rogers ship, they were rivals and friends, Shanks was obviously the most promising of the two and first in like as Rogers prodigy and future king of the pirates, and Buggy was ok with this, no, he wanted this, he was first in line to cheer on Shanks as he would take on the crown as King of the Pirates with Buggy as his right hand man. Fast forward to Rogers execution, this shakes up Shanks so hard that he gives up on the dream of becoming the king of the pirates, telling Buggy that he wants to throw away his dream and want Buggy to stay with him. This infuriates Buggy, he sees his rival and friend give up on his dream, just to get away as a coward, this one moment of weakness shatters how Buggy would see Shanks forever, he was no longer this admirable beacon of the best of the pirates, he was a coward that was shook by the timely end of their captain as he told them to chase after them. Not only did Shanks cower in fear of the future, but he refused the call their captain and mentor gave them. The reason why Buggy hates Shanks so much is because he once loved and admired him, but that one moment of weakness and cowards turned all that love and admiration into hate and disgust. Buggy has a good reason as to why he hates Shanks, and it is the same reason he wants so badly to become the king of the pirates.
