Months after taking our floor apart to get to our water tanks, we finally get to the point where it’s time to put them back together, but of course it’s not as simple as just putting a couple of lids back on…. Welcome to a steel boat restoration 😂

While you are brushing from one end, apply a vacuum cleaner to the other end of the pipe.

I thought about that, but really wanted to see what was coming out of the pipe because we weren’t sure if it had been painted or what else might be in there. But you’re right

Great progress on putting the water tanks back together! It's impressive to see how easily you're able to remove and replace them without having to rip up the floors and bearers. Keep moving along and thanks a lot for sharing! Fantastic work! 👍😊

A lot of boats have to rip up the floors and bearers to remove the tanks - meanwhile a true gentleman by name of Walter Schultz built Shannon Boats where all the tanks were easily removable and all fitted thru the hatch so when they needed replacing in 20 years after build it was doable rather than a demo job - clever designer

Yeah that sounds much smarter. There are so many opinions on what kind of tanks are best for steel boats due to condensation issues. It would be really nice to be able to remove them to check for sure.

in hindsight a coating of Ranex (Phosphoric Acid) will convert any rust in the pipe to an inert FePo4 (ferric Phosphate ) rinse and dry then paint
@WaywardLifeSailing

After cleaning the pipe out it would have for sure. But it would have been an extra step because of having to let it sit and then clean it out again before putting the paint on.

Good work as always. Working on boats almost always requires adaptation. No Max?⛵️

Making progress! Too late now but was wondering if it may have been possible to cut-off the rusty pipe as it exited the tank and then put in a plastic pipe protruding into the tank with some kind of epoxy sealant (is their a food grade type?) filling any voids between the plastic pipe and the remaining metal exit tube so water can't leak out? Could then use plastic piping and valves thereafter.

We could have but there would still be a chance of that failing and having things leak because of how differently different materials expand and contract. If the pipe rusts through maybe we will end up doing something like that 🤷🏻‍♀️
