blackfemme she's plain? she has pimples. and being "ugly" is based on each person. the character is rife with insecurity brought about by her constant comparison to her "perfect" brother. people can look more plain than her and still be prettier because of confidence (which the character obviously lacks)

Common misconception, isn't it? Sad even. When I was younger, I always thought I was ugly. Because I kept comparing myself to other girls in my school who wore make-up, had their hair done and colored. Always felt small and ugly compared to them. People back then said I was pretty. Never believed them, thought they were lying to make me feel better. Also, I thought I was fat. Seriously. Looking back at my pictures from before, I realize now that I was pretty and thin. Had I had the confidence then, maybe things today would've turned out different. Confidence is where it's at. Sad I thought confidence was a myth when I was younger, that I thought only the extroverted were confident. Take care because you become who you think you are. Make the most of who you are today. :) Haven't watched edge of seventeen yet cause it's not showing in my country, but I recommend watching also "Diary of a Teenage Girl."

I have already written about why I hate the brother and the best friend. I think probably the worst part of this movie was the mother herself. Think about it, a mother is supposed to love her children unconditionally and always be there for them and help them with there problems. She has shown absolutely none of these traits and has in fact been one of the main reasons why Nadine is so miserable. She fails to realize that her own daughter is suffering from anxiety and depression! She has never even tried to spend quality time with her, all she does is shove her to the side, coddle her son, and make Nadine feel like a disappointment. And she always asks surprised that Nadine is acting hostile toward her. Even when It was clearly her fault that Nadine ran away she never even attempted to apologize or even acknowledge her faults. I'm mad that Nadine had to apologize to her brother and friend but I'm sure as hell glad she didn't have to apologize to her mom.
